Any operating system 'rots' if you don't understand exactly how everything works, so when you don't know how an operating system works, it seems to break itself too easily. I will admit though that the command line syntax for fixing most Linux problems isn't anywhere near as intuitive as the equivalent in Windows, since with Windows it feels like executing commands whereas on Linux it's usually adding and removing entries from files in obscure folders, which is what both is doing but Windows is just better at.

As someone who uses my desktop as an internet machine that also plays No Man’s Sky sometimes… Linux seems more like its own self-contained hobby than a vehicle for computer-related tasks. It seems like the software equivalent of having an automotive hobby. Yes, I’m sure your super tuned up baby that you’ve put quite a lot of work into performs a lot better than my totally stock Toyota. Yes I’m sure you’re right that a stick shift can give you better efficiency and control. Unfortunately I just want something to get me to the grocery store with me having to think about it as little as humanly possible. Luckily OP seems to be way on board with that! Giving my big blue Win10 idiot some new thermal paste occasionally and going into the registry to disable AI bullshit/ automatic Bing search bullshit in the start menu is about my speed 😂
@null5766Ай бұрын
Linux used to be a hobby for me back when I had more free time. I would tinker with more advanced distros like Gentoo that allow for fine-grain control. It's a fine distro, but you waste so much time compiling the programs you would normally use; like Firefox. And even then, the speed-up is barely noticeable; if it even exists. And in the end, I ended up using it for the same shit I used Windows for. Not to say I went back to Windows. I love ease of use, don't get me wrong, but I also love not having a corporation shove shit down my throat without my consent. So I installed an easy distro like Pop OS, and now I have the ease of use of Windows with the speed and control of Linux. The most advanced thing I do nowadays is just update my system with the terminal. Otherwise, I'm surfing the internet, gaming, writing; you know, normal shit.
@maria-wu7usАй бұрын
Totally second the thought about distros. I use Linux both at work and at home and don't plan on ever switching back because it has basically all the functionality I ever needed from Windows without being Windows. I started with Ubuntu and transitioned to PopOS when my partner built me a desktop intended for gaming. The support from Valve recently for running Windows games under Linux has been remarkable. So if you play games I would still encourage you to try Linux.
@Spencer-wc6ew15 күн бұрын
You don't have to do any tuning to play games on Linux. Steam just works and will run Windows-only games on Linux automatically.
@emrahalien29724 күн бұрын
Yes, Steam makes it easy to run many games on Windows, but I also have games from EA (via Steam), Rockstar, and Epic Games that I like to play. Some of these were free or aren’t available directly on Steam. Beyond that, I rely on other programs, and my motherboard drivers likely don’t have Linux support. On top of that, I draw and use Clip Studio Paint, which might require Wine or working in the terminal to get it running on Linux. This adds extra steps and increases the chance of instability compared to just using Windows. Honestly, I dislike Windows-especially the newer versions-but I despise Linux even more, both because of the general annoyance of using any distro and the attitude of some in the community.

I was never a fan of arguments over "bloat" and it used to be quite common to win an argument over bloat by asking other Linux users to run "man mt" and then ask them why their distro comes with an program that controls magnetic tape drive operation. Unfortunately, that app has actually been removed from most distros these days, even bloated ones.

I've considered switching from Windows 10 to some version of Linux that's similar to Windows (cause my PC isn't compatible with Windows 11 and I don't want to keep using Windows 10 once it stops receiving security updates), but I'm worried that half of my Steam library will break or experience tons of issues (I know a guy that switched to Linux and we couldn't play on our Terraria world for a while after he switched because it was super buggy). Anyone know of a Linux distro that's similar to Windows 10 in terms of user-friendliness and also won't cause all of my Steam games to spontaneously combust?

linux mint is the most brain dead swap for every day usage, PopOS is the best out of the box for games, debian is the best after you get your foot in the door and get tired of shit breaking when you tinker. @@screwthishi5thing to add on top of this, there's a website called protondb that details game compatibility with Linux. It works with something called Proton; a piece of software written by steam to make Windows games compatible with Linux. The only core problem you'll run into is online games with kernel-level anticheat like COD Warzone. Those don't work. 99% of other games do. Also, there's a fan-made version of proton called GloriousEggroll that (imo) works better than official proton for most titles.

I wonder what linux elitists do with their custom lightweight distros. I mean, the average user might need for documents, browsing, gaming and multimedia (films, series and music), others might need it for creative production (music production, image processing, video editing etc), other for programming of all sort, but honestly I can't see a real usage for a STRIPPED DOWN VERSION OF SOME CUSTOM KERNEL BUILT WITH A MODIFIED GCC FROM CLANG LLVM. What do they do with it? C programming? Kernel programming? Firmware programming? Flipping bits by hand? WHAT?

@ghz2420 күн бұрын
Don't have to imagine, it's been 10 years since I kicked windows to the curb. Never missed it and I don't have to imagine my laptop running fine at 12 years old. At first I kept windows and dual booted (just in case I found something I had to have Windows for) but I found I only booted to windows to let it upgrade. Now I don't bother I just nuke any windows version that happens to be on any computer I buy. That saves the 40 gig I once allocated to windows that I never use. I only hate windows if I have to use it or maintain it or fix it.

My most recent computer purchase was $60 plus $15 for a charger and took an afternoon to set up with linux. Lots of bill money saved by not buying a new computer for $400-$1000 everytime Microsoft wants to discontinue a version. Not having to run Windows bloatware makes even 12 year old laptops run fine.
