I've been trying Manjaro for my gaming system with mixed results. Some of the games I usually play like Total War Warhammer II and Three Kingdoms as well as most of the Paradox grand strategy games work beautifully... but other games I have on Steam like PC Building Simulator and Mount and Blade II Bannerlord are a bit harder to get going (which is to say I still haven't gotten them to run properly yet). Honestly, a lot of people do use Linux sporadically, but they won't commit to it because too many software developers and vendors refuse to support it. Adobe, Serif (Affinity suite), countless game devs/pubs, etc. If a growing number of these and others would bite the bullet and make the investment, we would most certainly see Linux surge in desktop marketshare. But until your average computer user who isn't at all interested in tinkering and coding can get his or her required/preferred software without the hassle, it's likely not going to happen. It's one of the reasons I like AppImage, Snap, and Flatpak. They make developing for and distributing on Linux and its different distros that much more accessible for the devs for whom that has been a hindrance. But we still have a long way to go, and at the end of the day, it's going to require them to take that leap of faith and trust it will be worth the investment (and Linux users will need to reward that trust by actually purchasing the software they've requested be brought over).

I installed Pop! OS as a dual boot with Windows on a separate drive. I was particularly intrigued with the promise of a Linux-distro that was supposed to "work out of the box", as it was said by many. This wasn't the case for me. I used the Nvidia iso, since I have a GTX590, which also is a card with two GTX580 chips in one card as SLI. It didn't seem that Pop OS liked that. After fresh install, it booted into such a low resolution, I could barely see what I was doing on there. Tried to set the resolution higher, but the only option was 640x480. I tried to set it up for SLI and update the drivers for my GPU, but after two days of fiddling and going through forums and websites for clues and answers, most of them which I couldn't understand half of what was being explained, I finally had enough and gave up. I went over to Manjaro, which Ironically is said to be for more advanced users, and Pop! OS is said to be for more inexperienced users like myself. I've so far had much more luck in setting up my computer with SLI and getting my drivers to work in Manjaro. It wasn't easy, and it took a lot of fiddling too, but at least I could notice progress every time I tried something new. Now I finally have Manjaro up and running with correct display drivers and in SLI. With Pop! it was just no progress, everything I tried was like banging my head against the wall. One thing I unfortunately has realized with Pop! OS and Linux in general, is that there is no such thing as "working straight out of the box". If it does for you, then you're either one of the lucky ones, or you just haven't started to actually try and set anything up in your OS yet. When it works, Linux can be great, like you're dancing a beautiful dance. But the dancefloor is a minefield, surrounded by a river of hungry crocodiles, surrounded by a forrest of poisonous snakes.

@@andrearosanova6550 You obviously need to read up on the GTX 590. It's not two different GPU's, as I wrote in my comment, the 590 is two 580's built into one card. It was literally built like this and sold by Nvidia, as one card! So my original comment still stands. Anyway, I long since resolved this issue when I went over to Manjaro instead and made it work with that distro. I had to do lots of research and testing on my own, but it was also thanks to a great and helpful community I made it work. Manjaro worked way better for me anyway. Good video on how easy gaming on linux is, but I didn't see much that would make Pop_OS significantly better for gaming than many other distros. Drivers, newer kernel, Steam can be installed on any distribution if they aren't there out of the box. Hi Jason, is PopOS better than Manjaro for gaming/standard use?
@LinuxForEveryone4 жыл бұрын
Tough one to answer. When I last checked out Manjaro, it and Pop were neck and neck BUT Pop just had an overall better ease-of-use for me. Manjaro has since smoothed some paint points and I'm going to extensively check out Manjaro 19 in the coming weeks so I can have a fresher opinion. Insights will be right here.

To be quite honest when it comes to gaming for me. I'm 90% DOS to XP gamer. I have maybe 12 games total give or take that run between steam and origin. The rest are disc only which are NOT even on Steam, Origin or GOG. and most of my problem is graphic glitching to performance issues in bot modern Windows 7-10 and Linux. Which is NOT present in XP and older oses. To be honest I don't ever see Linux feasible for those games at at least in the last 13 years i have been trying due to compatibility issues . But then again I am not against trying something new. Since I'm not a modern gamer I don't need and expensive rig to run them. I just want something to run what I need when I need it.

but what you show here is also available on every distro out there. You didn't really show anything that makes it better. (nvidia drivers in the iso doen't really count as other distros also do that)
@LinuxForEveryone4 жыл бұрын
But as I pointed out, the driver is ACTIVE during install, not merely available TO install. That is a huge relief for hybrid graphics users in particular. GameHub is also not available right in the store. Lutris is not available in many distro stores. Then there's the libvulkan32 library that's packaged up with Steam, etc.... I'm talking about relieving minor pain points which Pop does exceedingly well.

Has Nvidia and AMD/Intel versions of iso like Pop. It looks great in both it's xfce and plasma versions (plus it has an i3 session available built-in) and because those DEs are so light more RAM available for games. sourceforge.net/projects/salient-os/ Also search Silent Robot channel on KZbin to see it.

I would love to get dash to dock working but for me no amount of googling and pasting commands will make it work. I don't know how many problems like this I've had with linux. Tried to get wine-staging on mint, nothing worked. Updating to a new let mint version should have fixed but instead broke my install. Switched to popOs. Wine staging did work but the wifi driver took the better part of a day to install because once again googling solutions didn't work, until it decided to for no reason. I love linux but I dread booting again to find another one of these problems that take hours to fix if at all.

I find it kinda weird that distributions have to maintain two separate builds between Nvidia and all the rest. But then... reading into the EULA Nvidia has with their drivers it's obvious. AMD has made some impressive work for the Linux community with their approach for the open-source drivers. Nvidia has a lot to learn here. Unfortunately, Nvidia doesn't care too much for the Linux community.

System 76 does an amazing job, no doubt about it, but Gnome's single threaded design is terrible. It still lags on my gtx 1070, and see how many people with the most powerful rigs are having the same problem. Gnome looks very good, but it is user experience failure, at least at its current state imo. In the meantime, Plasma 5 finally became solid, stable, feature rich and very lightweight, while it can look quite stunning as well.
