I agree a lot on the first advice! Learning to control different mediums has the potential to make you better and more versatile in your medium of choice, too! As for the second and third advice... I think they can be valuable for a beginner, even if I personally disagree, and liked some of the art (and especially the photograph) more before they were made to be more 'symmetrical'/ 'pretty' ;-) But I think here's where subjectivity plays a lot into it, and I think for a beginner who wants to get satisfying paintings, the advice is very sound. I'll personally still try and capture the little imperfections of life, though.

My friend’s sister was an artist who used acrylic to make the under painting which she painted her oils on. It saved drying time.

photo realism has its place, but its not very individualistic, all looks the same and could be done by anyone with enough practice, art always looks better (i think at least) when it has an artist's own personal touch to it 🙂

I´m super fond of your art Lioba, and thanks for those tips! However, I must admit that don´t agree with all of them, particularly concerning the symmetry of a human face (or did you actually mean proportion?) since not every face in reality is symmetric. I also think that your advice on modifying a photo to make it less photorealistic is purely subjective, this is about you, the artist Lioba, applying your own personal taste and beauty criteria to your own references. I personally find Kaya Scodelario (the actress on the picture you modified on Photoshop) beautiful enough and I´d never even think of changing her features if I ever was to make a portrait of her, but maybe, it´s about taste... Wouldn´t you agree however that constantly modifying your references it is the best way to achieve the "same face syndrome"?

Thank you so much for this video. I always struggle with naming one medium I use because I use all mediums and now I found out that I can mix them together- is so freeing. Thank you! I also struggle with symmetry. I didn't know about the gouache, how it can earse mistakes. Once again- THANK YOU!!! You got a new sub.

I find a lot of your advice flawed. When you edited the photography of a woman you took it from a beautiful photo to something mildly disturbing. Making art that looks like the photo will help you improve more than if you alter the proportions and end up not getting a good understanding of your subject. You can still have fun with a photo without messing with the proportions and that will aid your improvement more

This is a good point. I mean every time I draw the face it looks diffrent from the photo. It is much more dificult to draw the exact face. It seems like I already mastered this skill.😂

Yeah saying the edited photo is "more beautiful" than the actual person is quite insulting. The edited photo looks like those tacky filters that social media influencers use, in the end barely anyone's online photos look like themselves, and young girls think that's normal and it skews their own self-image. I'm all for steering away from references to make art look like your own, but let's not say our version is "more beautiful" than the actual human model!

@@kreativna that even isn't what I'm saying, I think distorted images can be used unoffensively, it just won't help you improve, if anything it'll hold you back skill level wise. I don't hold anything against using distorted images as long as you don't say that they are better I do see your point though.
@kreativna

@@bria1648 Yeah we seem to differ on the reason why we don't like this practice :) I don't think photo-realism/accuracy is always the goal of art. Having a unique style and distorting faces on purpose is a valid artistic choice.

Changing the facial features could you lead to a lot of heads looking quite the same, without any kind of personality, don't you think. Isn't it boring and toxic to take away all unique features for the sake of pretty?
@LiobaBrueckner
@LiobaBrueckner Жыл бұрын
Yes and no - I prefer specific esthetics over others and will alter my references until they look like I want them to - I always tell people that my paintings are not real. But if I would claim that a photo is a real person like many instgram models do than yes, that would be very toxic indeed. With fantasy paintings I think it's clear to most people that they are made up - but if you want to focus your art on the unique features of people you should do it! My niche is just a different one but I encourage everyone to find their own art style and message they want to portray in their paintings! :)

Beautiful. Is that photoshop used around 2 minutes in? Or what photo editor do you use? I'd like to find an affordable, possibly free, quality editor. I don't need too crazy advanced with things I won't use. Just ease of use and good basic tools. Thanks:)

Interesting advice, I'm not sure if your meaning may have been lost in translation or not. But alterting a face to make it more "beautiful" probably wasn't the best way to word it. Alter it to make it more mystical or magical or ethereal maybe? I just think in this day and age there are a lot of people with body dysmorphia, so choosing the right phrases is important. Otherwise it's a beautiful work of art, I love your style and how you help a lot of artists. I am considering joining your patreon 🫶

"This looks so much better, doesn't it?" After photoshopping a model's face to change her features to a smaller face, bigger eyes, smaller nose etc. no, it literally doesn't look better, it looks so creepy and uncanny, she looks like a bug, you made her more childish too, it's so weird and insulting for the models

Also, your advice about modifying reality to draw more interesting things applies to changing colors, adding artsy touches, surrealist details, etc, or yes, changing facial and body proportions to make it look more artsy and abstract, but you AREN'T changing facial features for that reason, you are changing them to "make them more beautiful", you aren't even drawing the models anymore, you are drawing league of legends same face syndrome female characters drawn by horny men, please, analize yourself and why do you think they look more beautiful when you photoshop their faces to have childish, eurocentric features instead of preserving every model's uniqueness
