Brother thank you so much. I just had my debut solo album STOLEN after being distributed through Distrokid. A person impersonating a man who died in 2018 stole my music, uploaded it to all those services (by changing song titles) and he even used a video of me playing my songs to my daughter who's a toddler claiming to be him. That's because when you register with a performance rights organization that gives them the authority to license your music through agencies like Harry Fox you don't need a performance rights be your own publishing company get your own barcode and your own isrc

Also...do you need to apply for digital distribution services...or as a music publisher will be granted access to such independently separate from them?

6:10 So does this apply to remixes as well? Note: I'm not talking about using the original recording. I have a remix of "Rose theme" from Titanic that over the stretch of six minutes uses maybe a bar and a half of the right hand melody... but it's all my own synths and sequencing. I'm wondering if I can release it as a remix of that song without getting in trouble if it gets a lot of streams.. One of the bars that I take from it is heard prominently in parts of it (it repeats quite a bit) but it amounts to a C major arpeggio without the 3rd, which is yes the way the arpeggio is played is distinct but it's a basic C major arpeggio and I heard some people say that you can't copyright basic chords or arpeggios. I think I could get away with releasing as an original track but my morals tell me that I need to say it's a remix of James Horner's work. but I don't want to get in trouble or not be able to make money off of it, especially since it's one of my favorite tracks and I'd like to make an HD remaster (it was made on a Commodore Amiga with really low-fi sampler so it's not the best audio quality)

I actually had an “industry” guy do this for me back around 2005. He didn’t do 3/4 of what was covered here. It showed. Music industry is a completely counterintuitive, counterproductive, counter... common sense? shitshow. Just ridiculous the hoops one has to hurl himself through.

@@labteqmusic1264 : You mean, like record companies have been doing for decades? The times are changing. With the relatively low cost of the tools to create music in your bedroom, basement, etc., record companies are no longer as needed for the creation and producing part. But they used to handle everything else also, things now up to the artist to do. Most change comes with some pain.
