Willie Smith's (1910-1967) alto intro brought gasps from the audience. It gives me the shivers each time I hear it too. To think of all the jazz masters who are gone forever brings a tear to my eye. Thank goodness for KZbin. Thank you for posting this Hoagy Carmichael masterpiece.

Even if Willie Smith had only recorded this single solo, he would deserve being remembered. Imo, this belongs to the 5 or 6 best alto solos ever recorded. He has been my favorite altoist since I first heard this. Nobody - except Johnny Hodges - had such a fire, such a deeply emotional playing style.

Masterful. I have to believe that the great masters of the past - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven - all of whom did a lot of improvising themselves - would have been astounded by the ability of these jazz masters to improvise so ingeniously over the structure of this beautiful song.

This Stardust is an iconic version...so are all the solos of every musician, but mostly inspired are Slam and L.Hampton himself. For me his best solo ever !

It was in Germany in 1965; Augsburg Germany, by accident in the early afternoon one Sunday, that we picked this up just before it began on the Armed Forces Radio Station. It was about three of us. We "understood" who we were hearing - But we didn't expect what we got...........It's been the "Anthem" of my jazz listening days. You guys (and gals) we all should meet up in a stadium, just because of something like this - We are in a special world as we listen. Blessings!

Lionel Hampton's composition of "Star Dust" is a Jazz Classic that time will never erase for generations to come as long as the music industry preserve music of this quality. Thank you for your comment. I did not say that Mr. Hampton was the original composer of "Stardust", any artist can have compositions/arrangements on any tune. Their is a big difference. Stardust is a standard and many artist's have recorded Hoagy Carmichael's song.. Lionel Hampton is one of the many artist's who have recorded this magnificent standard "Stardust". My first introduction to live jazz. Seeing the Lional Hampton Band when bands were travelling and taking their music around. It was a high school in Moncton New Brunswick , Canada. Hamp was the ultimate performer in those days. I was about 14 or 15 years old and we had driven a hundred miles to see this great band. At that time Hamp played the music as recorded on this album. I still love this form of jazz and continue to search it out. I'm 82 now and wishing for more of this type of jazz.

I remember the first time I heard this, somewhen in the early '50s. My closest buddy at the time invited me to come listen to it. Man O man, I was floored, still am. And there's Slam Stewart too.

I heard this tune for the first time by the end of 1958 on the radio station Voice of America, transmitter Tanger. Since then I have been searching for the buddies featuring that tune. Unfortunately I did'nt find any information i.e. who plays the alto, the guitar, the tenor, the piano and the trumpet. Do you have more information on this issue? Thanks.

Lionel Hampton's Music is without a doubt one of the greatest musician's of all time. This composition has all of the qualities of Jazz Greatness. One of my most treasured recordings out of hundreds (on 78rpm) how it isnt worn out by now Ill never know. If Im ever despondent about my playing I listen to this and I cant wait to get playing again !

One question Talbot, I remember hearing this song in my crib, my father played it a lot it was his favorite. The version he had and I still have was on a mono 33.3 RPM record, that I made still have? I knew where all the pops skips and noise was on the record. I was also given and played 78 RPM records when I got older, and this song is over 15 minutes, most 78's only played 5-6 minutes per side, and the longest 78 record ever made was almost 8 minutes by Frank Sinatra. Are you sure you have the 78 RPM version, or do you have to turn it over? Back in the in the 70's, I bought another 33 PRM version of this , and then the CD version in 1984 or '85 when jazz & classical CD's were produced more than rock and R&B disc.

Thanks Talbotvanman, I have the same one I believe, thanks for checking that out, I have the same one I believe from 1947 before I was born and the remake white jacket one shown on here. I've given away most of my vinyl collection when it was replaced with a comparable CD. I hate surface noise, ticks and pops. Plus most people alive today never played a record, and what stopped some of the playing of 78's were that the needle or stylus used were bigger than that of a 33/45 and or they stopped making players with that speed. I replaced and fixed many reversible needles, and when the 33/45 side stopped playing, they flipped over to the 78 side, and worst were the people who put coins on the arm to weigh it down. I myself used sewing needles or nails when the needles broke to play 78's my parents didn't want on some 78 rpm player I was given as a child that had no speakers. You put in the needles, and it had a large headed screw to hold the needles in place. I don't think I ever saw a 16 - 2/3 rpm record though, but I've seen that speed on some players.
