I dont care about the goals, the assists, the dribbles, the trophies, the personal accolades. What really astonishes me is his determination. Hes getting marked and tackled hard, he doesnt dive, he doesnt fall unless he really cant keep his balance. He doesnt try to simulate. They are pulling his shirt, they are kicking his legs, he just ignores them and keeps going. That alone makes him so unique.

I’m guessing you are some years under fifty . Take it from an old man who has watched the beautiful game for near seventy years, Messi is afforded the gentleness usually reserved for new born babies compared to players who dared to display their skills in the 70s and 80s. Some of the footage from this period more resembles rugby than footy. He and his contemporaries also enjoy the not insubstantial benefits of playing on near perfect pitches unlike the ploughed fields previous generations were forced to negotiate.

Numbers, stats and awards (personal and team) aside, I truly believe anyone who understands the game can see that Messi is the greatest footballer in history thus far. The numbers and trophies don’t always matter as it is difficult to give personal awards in a team sport. His vision, execution, game intelligence, technique and decision making is remarkable. He can do almost everything everyone else can do but not everyone can do everything he can. In terms of being a footballer, I’d give him the Ballon D’Or every year he is still playing as he plays the game like no other. I feel truly blessed to have witness him throughout his career.

I've been following his career since 2006 and he always gave me this unexplainable supernatural vibe... He is so ordinary and, yet, extraordinary. In my mind he is the greatest sportsperson ever.
