Commodores was a 🔥 group seen them live many times.
@Gdub52o5 жыл бұрын
He has said himself that once he was out, he realized he didn't want to be part of a group anymore. One of the issues was his songs becoming more popular than songs the others wrote. As he began to make money for writer's credit the group pushed back harder against his slow songs. I find it interesting that he said in this clip "i already had a band" if you see performances from their last few years together it was obvious they looked more and more like his backing band than an equal group. Unfortunately no black band of the era successfully stayed together. Not Jacksons, not LTD, not Earth Wind & Fire and not the Commodores
@SupremeNerd4 жыл бұрын
actually, Earth, Wind and Fire DID stay together....took breaks yes but they stayed together...The original 3 are there now. RIP Maurice White. As far as The Jacksons and L.T.D. goes, you're spot on

The Commodores forever!
@manuginobilisbaldspot4244 жыл бұрын
The reality is, almost ALL successful bands/groups have a breakout star. And it's almost always the lead. The lead is in that position for a reason. Lionel needed to go, it was his time. But it's been almost 40 years since "Lady" was their last real hit together. Lionel, no shade intended, hasn't been a BIG STAR since 1986. Why in the hell haven't they had a reunion at any point? I don't even recall them at his tribute show...that sucks.
@tedder19314 жыл бұрын
I think Water Orange and William King who still are still in and run the Commodores are not interested? JD Nicholas is the third member and does lead vocals of the Richie songs in concert, and has been with the Commodores since 1984. I guess they just want to keep being a catalog act as a trio and do around 150 dates a year, and I am sure they make a decent living on the road still. It would be nice to see a reunion, but I don’t see it happening unless they make the Hall of Fame.
@jaylene.turner65242 жыл бұрын
Their last hits with Lionel were “Lady,You Bring Me Up” and “Oh No”. Even if they reunite, it won’t be complete because keyboardist Milan Williams died in 2006 from cancer.

It was a combination of things. It was mainly like he said, but one of the main things was the slow songs. They just had different styles, kind of like the Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald
@blackhawk7r2218 ай бұрын
The Commodores turned into what the Temptations became, or later New Edition. One main frontman in the eyes of the public. And equal band mates take that hard. They had a great run.
@realkylehooks5 ай бұрын
That's a bit of revisionist history. Clyde was seen as every bit the star Lionel was before he went solo. Their huge funk hits were mostly led by Clyde, and Clyde was a better showman. Their ballads were mostly led by Lionel. I've talked to several people close to the situation at the time, and what really happened is that Motown offered Clyde the solo deal first, and Clyde said no because he wanted to make sure his bandmates continued with the great career they were having (which he successfully continued until just a couple years ago and is replaced by his son). After Clyde said no, Motown offered Lionel the deal and he jumped ship. It was only after Lionel had a few major hits solo, right when music videos took the world by storm, that Lionel was retroactively viewed as *the* star of the Commodores.

The story I got was that Richie had to take two to three years off to do his solo stuff, and Commodores said “no way, we want to work,” and went on without him. Years later, it seems Richie got, and took all the credit for the Commodores, and I think that has bothered William King, and Walter Orange for some time. What is crazy is Lionel Richie still tours, and so do The Commodores.
@SupremeNerd4 жыл бұрын
That's partially true. All of they're biggest hits except for brick house and i believe machine gun where written by Lionel Richie. He was also writing songs for other people.. their last big hit before Nightshift was Lady you bring me up (written by Richie with credit given to over of the other Commodores). He came up with them but he didn't need them it was the other way around
