As someone who is Retired US Army I love this engine. That Air Raid Siren is fabulous. When I hear it I want to go duck and cover from a possible attack. The engine is so huge but my layout is mostly 031 with one turn of 064. Not sure if it would work. Good luck with it and keep playing the siren.

Nice review. Model Railroaders tend to be history buffs. World War 2 is a fascinating part of American History. My father was a World War 2 veteran so studying the war brought it to the next level for me. Your turbine definitely takes you back in time. Love the teeth on the nose and pin up on the side. (Favorite feature for me is probably the pin up.)

That “Air Raid Siren” is badass cool!! Gotta love it! Lionel was thinking out if the box when they put that sound effect in it. Having something different makes it that much more interesting instead of the same ole same ole. Even the smoke feature when the turbine sound kicks in makes this locomotive different from all others. The smoke boost is amazing to see. Glad to see you purchased this locomotive. Seeing both of your shark mouth design locomotives running together was impressive. You should purchase some die cast P40 Flying Tiger airplanes, and hang them from your ceiling in different locations over your layout. That would look pretty cool while you run your teethy trains! Great review!!

I wish we could have predicted just how popular the Turbines ended up being. My boss ordered three of these army turbines and they disappeared within a week or so. We also had 6 regular UP Big Letter, one UP Small Letter, and one UP Flag. All gone. People are going bananas for these things, and I think rightfully so.

That is a pretty neat locomotive. You might consider looking into getting some 1/48th scale Curtis P40 Warhawk aircraft with that specific nose art (the Flying Tigers) and create some flatcar loads with them. You would have to remove the wings and place them alongside the fuselage to both make them fit and also look prototypical. Would not they look good behind that locomotive? Having grown up in the 1950's during the Cold War era I well remember air raid drills during my grade school years. Kudos on a great layout and please keep the informative videos coming.

Someone may have made this comment, but the teeth come from the American Volunteer Group in 1941-42, who flew the P-40 "Flying Tigers". Their P-40s were adorned with beautiful nose art, including the famous tiger teeth. The men that flew these planes truly represented the greatest generation. And, the P-40 Warhawk, along with the F4U Corsair (think Black Sheep Squadron) and the P-51 Mustang, are my favorite WW2 aircraft.

Some late-production steam engines like the Southern Pacific GS-4's, the New York Central's Niagaras, and the Lackawanna's Poconos had air horns in addition to whistles. It was found that in conditions such as fog an air horn, which is mono-directional, gave better warnings than a conventional whistle which is omni-directional.
