Lionel Visionline Big Boy

In this video we will take a look at Lionels 2023 release of their Visionline Big Boy #4019. We will take a look at the engine itself, some mods I have done so far, and compare it to the 2014 version. We will also see some running of the engine so you can get a good sense of how the engine runs and operates. Please let us know what you think, is the 2023 version better than the 2014 version?

Thank you. I was going to buy one today. But with so many problems being reported and my age considered too, I changes my mind. I really wanted it and the price was way low with discount, but ….. not good fit. Very smart of you to mention age as a factor for evaluating such a huge investment of money. Good review.

The problem with comparing sounds is the old version still has the manual sound adjustment(I do miss that feature) so I can crank it up passed the loudest setting on the new one. Also the chuffing on the new one with nothing attached is very soft. I should have turned down the chuff all the way on the old version for the video. I might do a follow up quick video rectifying that.

The older version had a louder sound but not as clear. The new one was more clear but not as loud. To me it is a toss up, I would be happy with either engine. Can you do a short video on the white caboose as I would like to know more about that. Seems very detailed, which is what I like on all my rolling stock but specifically the caboose.

That’s a nice options. I’m starting to have my reservations about the gloss paints(good lord they are hard to keep clean) but they are a really nice variation to have.

I really like the wood grain look on the tender. Did you do a video on how you did that?

I did not, how ever I could do a quick tutorial in the future. It’s basically Vallejo paints brushed on . Then I airbrush on some black and do a light wash.

@@GoldStandardTrains I don't like the weathered look on locomotives. The painting on the deck, handles for the valves, the little things that seperaates the black dul and boring look makes it pop, more appealing to the eye. Excellent ideas.

Yea weathered trains are certainly personal preference. I do like them but it shifts your railroad into another direction I feel once you start going down that path.

Correct, as I said it’s likely 10,12,15 years potentially away from being done again. If someone is young and is ok to wait that long, that’s ok. But for me I’m at the age where waiting that long isn’t really what I want to do, so if Lionel catalogs an engine I really want I just get it while I can.

Those still have the manual speaker adjustment and you can def turn it higher.

@@GoldStandardTrains hmmmm I may have to find the 2014 version then. I like that whistle the best and if it’s louder then it wins for me lol! Either that or the legacy version that came after the 2014 version that didn’t have the pop off or blow down smoke or the depleting coal load. Those features I can live with out. The legacy one still had the same 3 speaker setup which I really like and the same whistle and I think whistle steam too.

@@zechariahfrink3707 the new one does have 5 different whistles. Overall the new one is plenty loud and the extra features really do make it stand out. And honestly you can still find the VL one at reasonable prices compared to the legacy one. But to each their own. I don’t know if the legacy one has manual sound adjustment. Might be something to find out. IMO the new one is still very very nice and an elite tier engine to own. If you can see it in person before making a decision, I do recommend always doing that before spending this type of money.

The whistle sounded terrible didn’t here the four other whistle sounds but the one demonstrated was terrible!!!!

I should probably do another follow up comparison video. It deserves a shorter standalone video. The old version has manual speaker adjustments which I had dialed in pretty well and make the older one louder. The new engine sounds pretty good too but I think I wasn’t able to capture it as well in this video.
