I took Jazz Appreciation in college. Definitely a cool class to take. I’ll add- At first, Jazz was totally looked down on. It wasn’t considered real music and the musicians weren’t considered legitimate musicians. That changed when Benny Goodman played and sold out Carnage Hall in NY. Really a lot of the ‘controversy’ revolved around racial issues- Different races playing in the band, leading the band, attending performances, etc. Playing Jazz in those days was as controversial as the most controversial rap music is today.
