If you study the Revolutionary War, you understand how important militias were to the founding of our country. They still are. They are a first and last line of defense and that is likely why certain political elements in this country want the abolished.

Looking at the footage it is suggested that it wasn't the shot that was fired that started the war but the advancement of the British regulars with their bayonets in the ploy to get the militia to disperse that got it started. Instead of deescalating the situation it only made it worse.
