Also the lions mane is usually used for protection on the face and neck from other males when fighting. They are very course and dense fur, so when another male is tearing up and biting forcefully, the mane helps protect its head and neck.

@@mfanafuthimokubung5026 it is plausible that a dark mane will attract lionesses, the reason is simple, the manes tend to darken with the years, so a very young lion will have a blond mane, while the more mature lions will have dark ones (in the front you can see the blond regrowth because the mane regenerates, but the rest of the coat will be black) obviously the lionesses will be more attracted to lions that are mature (rich in experience) however it is rare that in nature they reach certain ages (in captivity they even reach 25 years, but in nature they obviously live less since they have to defend the territory from nomad coalition of males, and this is definitely a problem for their old age) certainly females have a simpler life (in nature they generally live longer than males since they do not have to face any opposing lion directly)

The mane is not just for pea-cocking. Male lions have evolved to being more suited to fighting when fully grown, in short powerful bursts, rather than having the stamina to hunt or the dexterity to climb trees. They are simply too muscular. The mane serves to protect the neck from their opponents.

Male lions kill (or steal) more prey than females. Allow me to explain. As stated in the video, prides generally have only one adult male. Female lion cubs stay in the pride their entire life (with rare exceptions). Male cubs are driven off at around 2 years old. Where do they go? They go live alone or in small bands with other males. Eventually, they either die, or get big and strong enough to claim a pride of their own, displacing the dominant male. So, all those prideless male lions are out there in the bush living the thug life hunting, stealing from other predators, and honing their fighting skills until they either die, or take over a pride. Prideless lions don't get to share as much, so as individuals, they end up having to kill more often. They don't get studied as much because they are nomadic and harder to follow than a pride with a distinct range.
