LIONS TRAP AND ATTACK OLD LEOPARD

A pride of lions trap an old leopard up a tree. The leopard panics and jumps from the tree into the pride of lions, who then attack it! 😳
35-Year-old senior game ranger Michael Botes experienced this disturbing moment and shared the story with LatestSightings.com: Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
"We were on an afternoon safari and made our way to join a sighting of 12 sub-adult members of the Kambula lion pride. En route, we found the Mlowathi male leopard in a marula tree, close to where the lions were. I stayed with the leopard because the lions were walking in that direction anyway. The two sightings merged."
"At first I was concerned for the leopard, but both species had spotted each other and seemed unbothered. The lions moved off and settled around a waterhole whilst the leopard groomed itself. The majority of the pride fell asleep, except for one female who kept a close eye on the leopard. The leopard eventually got down the tree, and had it not been for the one observant female, it would have evaded 12 lions unharmed."
"The leopard soon realized its mistake and instinctively ran to a second marula tree and climbed up to avoid the lions. The lions gathered around the trunk of the tree with the leopard hissing at them from above. A young lioness climbed up the tree and the leopard panicked and jumped out. Sadly, although landing without injury, it was surrounded by the lions. After 30 minutes of fighting, one of the lionesses got a stranglehold on the leopard's neck and bit down. Every single lion was bleeding at this point from cuts made by the leopard's claws. I could hear his spinal cord snap and he then died."
"In my 16 years in the bush I've never seen anything like this, and I have spoken to a lot of guides that have been in the industry their whole lives, and no one has seen this happening. I think it happens more often than we realize though. As guides, we often stumble upon the remains of leopards that have been attacked and killed by lions and other predators. But to see it happening is just a matter of timing. Even though it's hard to watch, it was interesting to witness such a rare yet disturbing sighting."
"My advice to anybody experiencing a similar sighting would be to make sure there is ample space for the interaction to take place without the vehicles interfering. This was an incredibly hard sighting to watch and as a guide, you should always just remember to calm your guests down and try to explain to them that unfortunately, predators are in competition with each other for territory. It is important to remember our role as guides is to observe and by no means interfere. This leopard would have died regardless of us being there to bear witness to the events or not."
"If the leopard stayed in the first tree maybe he would have survived this. I'm sure during his +/- 14 years of life, he outran and survived many lions, but taking on 12 young lions eager to prove themselves was a fatal mistake."
"Despite this being one of the worst sightings I've ever witnessed - I have a lot more respect and understanding of the power and will to survive of both these big cat species."

@@bocaraca3814 there may be reason to be optimistic. 30 years ago the talk was overpopulation and mass starvation and Paul Eurlich and The Population Bomb. Today the talk is we may be living in peak population right now or very soon to come. If that is the case and if technology continues to advance where we can continue to produce more food in better ways, the amount of land that can be returned to native state could be huge. And however imperfectly, zoos do preserve genetic lines that may one day be used for reintroduction of species. There are flickers of hope out there.

In another video there was more of an explanation, that was on a blog written by one of the guides on scene. It was the sub-adults that were walking up and ran into the leopard. The Leopard ran and got up a tree just fine. Then they wandered off some distance away and after a time, the Leopard committed to climbing down, but the Sub-adults heard the claws scraping the bark as he went down. They caught him on his way down. In this video he made it to a tree, so I think this video takes place 'right after' that happened. The Leopard thought he could quietly sneak away, but the noise of him coming down gave him away. He didn't come down with them directly pursuing him or freak out and jump into them or anything. Leopards often will climb down when Lions are in the general area and typically it is quietly enough for them to hit the ground and slink away. Them hearing him and still being close enough to corner him before he could turn and jump back into the tree is what did him in.

Life and death. "The universe is impartial, it sees the myriad things as inanimate objects" That was a better death than many humans endure. In the name of being "humane" we let people suffer and rot on a hospital bed. But in reality, the Sub-Adult lions wandered off and relaxed under a different tree some yards away. The Leopard thought he could sneak down his tree and slink off without them noticing. Leopards do that all the time. The flaw in this specific sighting was though - the Sub-Adults heard the Leopard coming down the tree and when a cat that size is committed to leaving a tree, it can't just turn around mid-stride and start climbing again. So they caught the leopard out on the ground. It was a miscalculation and he was in that moment fighting for his life, but he didn't leave the tree to take the fight to the lions, he was just simply... heard.
@alakazamgengar5434
@alakazamgengar5434 Жыл бұрын
I'm assuming this is taking place in the lions territory, given the leopards desperation and lion's determination to kill the lone cat. Leopards can only stay up a tree from for so long, which wasn't that tall. The fear of the lions laying nearby and lurking. Let alone lions being tempted to climb up. The lions could (and likely would have) climb the tree and flushed out the leopard eventually; likely with even more lions like the big male(s) coming to the commotion.

Wow! I've been wanting to see a confrontation like this with a fully grown leopard for years! I always thought lions wouldn't risk it by getting a lot of injuries and therefore wouldn't be able to kill a fully grown leopard without getting badly injured themselves. I still have my doubts though, that this one looked like a really old leopard, hence not too powerful and agile. And it feels like the lions sensed that and went for the kill. Such a rare and wonderful sight!

@jeremy6017
@jeremy6017 Жыл бұрын
Actually, the opposite. The Sub-adults are more likely to leave the situation. It was an adult Lioness that actually did the killing of the leopard, even though it was the Sub-Adults that found it. Youth and inexperience could have saved the leopard, but when the adult lionesses took interest, it was over.

Spotted hyenas have no fear of lionesses because a lion's neck bite is not fatal. As you can see in this video, leopards and cheetahs die instantly after being bitten by a lion. Hyenas are not fatal even when attacked by a male lion's neck, and even when they appear to be dead, they can quickly come back to life. A lion cannot kill a hyena unless a large male lion crushes its spine.
@jeremy6017
@jeremy6017 Жыл бұрын
That is terribly untrue statements. A Lioness can kill an adult Hyena and a Lion's strangle hold is lethal if it can be maintained long enough - on any animal they get one on. So I don't know what you're on about with these 'facts.' I will give you some benefit in agreeing that Hyenas are pretty durable. Like I said though, if a Lioness or a Lion gets a strangle hold on it - and can maintain it, the hyena is a dead hyena.
