“I just play the trumpet.” W. Marsalis (Understatement of the year.) I admire anyone who can teach trumpet effectively while sitting in a public area, let alone with the White House in the background. I like your analogy of the elevator; I say something similar by describing notes as needles which get smaller and closer together as you ascend. It’s harder to line up the thread on the smaller and closer needles, but once you do, the effort to push it through is the same. I use both leadpipe and mouthpiece buzzing (and also a rim visualizer) as steps along the way to playing the horn. Each requires a slightly different approach to achieve the best result, which encourages flexibility in the body (I call that playing like Gumby.) Whereas the mouthpiece has few if any defined slots, the leadpipe has slots that are less defined than the trumpet, which encourages sensitivity in the chops. I also find the leadpipe to be the most effective in opening up tight, pinched sound. I’m taking inspiration from your videos, thanks for posting!

As a horn player I use some of these techniques backwards. I will buzz the pitch with the mouthpiece, then take it off and try to hold the pitch with my lips. I enjoyed this video- great explanation!

I do a bit of free buzzing, then mpc buzzing, then the horn. If I really strain on the lip buzzing, I can get an E above middle C. I'm always afraid I'm going to hurt myself if I push it too much, and I tire easily with the free buzzing. I'm amazed at how high your lip buzz is, Charlie. I'll have to take your word that the lip buzzing range gets better, but it's a real strain, and I get tired quickly with free buzzing. My every day warm up: pick a ballad (ex. Moonlight in Vermont). Free buzz 4 or 8 measures, then mpc buzz the same phrase (I use a BERP), then play it on the horn; repeat for the next 4 or 8 bars. I consider this a "flow study" covering buzzing and intonation, with working on a tune. Thanks for a great vid.

That was a fantastic lesson. Where we you 50yrs ago before I developed bad habits with Brass & found that Reeds were an alternative voice? Trumpet = 1st love. Your ideas on vibration, resonance, & tongue shape applies to "the Toy Section".. (as the Brass Section lovingly refers to us). Hey Charlie, great to see you again! I was just thinking it had been a while since you posted any vids. I enjoyed all 3 new ones... looks like a chilled out place to practice! Anyway I've been following you since I started playing trumpet... about 8 years. There's a few people I follow on youtube for general jazz tips but you're pretty much my go to trumpet guy. Your 50 min embouchure vid helped me loads! I think you're a brilliant player and excellent communicator. Anyway I notice you've changed your tune about buzzing when we're playing the trumpet. I was trying to find a vid you made years ago but perhaps you've taken it down. You demonstrated that we don't need to buzz to play the trumpet (I remember you saying "like cooling soup"). This vid (above) I agree with everything you said and there's more helpful bits in there for me. I'm just not sure that once we get to the trumpet we're actually buzzing more that the feedback loop / standing wave is causing our lips to vibrate. Perhaps the same end result but if I think of it this way I find I don't force my tone so much as I'm not "trying" to buzz. I'm not criticising you... I honestly think you're a great technician, a very musical player and appreciate all your great content. I'm just wondering... what are your thoughts on this?

The leadpipe is also great to hear if a student is overblowing instead of using a focused buzz. I also like it for the octave slurs. Just getting used to finding that balance of air speed, tongue level, and aperture.

I quit playing almost, oh, 40 years ago. So for me picking the horn back up-well, actually, it's being cleaned...O Lord, we do pray, please let the technician be able to get the slides unstuck!-buzzing, both with and without the mouthpiece, is critical for me right now; I'm having to wake up my entire mouth (actually, resurrect it from the dead), so I'm doing a lot of buzzing before I even get to the horn (which should be back in a week). I can already feel my mouth responding. It's going to take a while, but it's there, for which I'm very happy. So thanks for the vid.

Lip buzzing and mouthpiece buzzing is a great way for me to warm up. I couldn't do it until I discovered that I should start with lips open and gradually close until the buzz starts. I used to close my lips and try to blow them open to start the buzz. Buzzing gently is something I do every time before my practice. I can even do it in the car if I can't practice.

Excellent video Charlie. You explain physical aspects so well. I’d like to just add that free/mouthpiece/lead pipe buzzing/playing can be overdone and the goal is good form/technique. Once form is established its best to practice consistently everyday. Never try to sub these exercises for actual practice I know this because it happened to me and I had to unlearn habits after going through an embouchure change

I'm exploring lead pipe buzzing and I see one benefit: Another way to say 'full resonance' via lead-pipe buzzing is that the lip aperture is very open and with less unnecessary tension. The aperture at its max: I see it as the 'direction' I want my embouchure to go. A model, so to speak. I want my aperture when playing the horn to be just a smaller variation of it but same general shape. If I keep that kinesthetic awareness as I play the horn itself, I've got a model to contrast what's happening to. If one part of the 'circumference of the aperture loses its shape or collapses, I can start to zero in to muscle tension or weakness that's causing it.

The most important lesson on slotting you can learn is that we do not slot the notes for the instrument. We have to provide constant airflow to play through the slots so that everything is always connected. Even if you don't connect in terms of legato, you have to make sure to at least have the feeling of the connection. Try to play a glissando from low c to high c on the mouthpiece. Notice that you can play smoothly through the range because we don't have the restriction of the harmonic series yet on the mouthpiece. Incorporate the same feeling when playing the trumpet. Make sure that the air keeps moving. This is crucial. Like that we can easily play through the whole range of the instrument very fast, back and forth, without hurting ourselves. Finally, everything feels as if we were playing one single note in terms of the connection of the air. It's a feeling of letting everything go and letting the slots happen once you pass the partial on the instrument. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I always use the example of the hose too. It's so evident lol. Anyways, we're all different here. The buzzing definitely happens as porter said later. Think of what the reed does for the sax. The big issue is that a lot of pro players still dont know how to buzz. Hence, they sound like a mosquito when they try to pass it to the trumpet. The big mistake here is to force the buzzing and take it into the trumpet when we should leave the air (steady ) do the job till buzzing appears in a natural way by itself. Need to be patient! I posted a video about two classes I had a week ago. I talked randomly bcoz two long classes were edited, still, talking to my students, you might hear something that might benefit you. I focused more that day on the importance of using the right air support, the same embouchure, for all registers, the aperture, and most important to me, synchronization, demonstrating all of it. Hi Charlie, please answer, you used to play a pipe with a black plastic case under the keys in your previous videos, there was some kind of emblem on it. Please tell me what was your model pipe. I play a bit of Sax, just for my own pleasure etc. And recently got interested in Trumpet. Man....when I look at this video, you seem to lip buzz so easy! I'm still at the stage of a plastic mouthpiece just trying to get some type of reasonable sound. My plan is to rent a Trumpet and give it a go, but I figure there's no point whatsoever until I master the buzzing technique. I stand looking in the mirror sometimes, making this crazy buzzing sound, and wondering how in the hell this can actually be translated into playing a Trumpet! Must be doing something wrong. I have a protruding upper central tubercle on my lips. I thought everyone did and never thought much of it. But I'm finding that even though my MPC buzzing is on point and I can slide deftly from low concert Bb to low concert F (a perfect 5th) without issue, my airstream shoots straight downwards when attempting to perform the same slide without the MPC. It also results in a much softer volume level for lip buzzing than what Charlie is emitting in the video for his lip buzz volume level. I've been playing with all sorts of lip positioning over the past 4 months trying to sort this out and I'm just not able to figure this out on my own it seems. I'm even starting my lip buzzing with the "Fffff" sound, to avoid some of the common problems. Can anyone suggest something I haven't thought of trying yet?

One more comment: I'm a senior citizen, and a comeback player for 13 years now. My teach started me on buzzing right off the bat. I'm no technical whiz on the horn, but people tell me I have a great sound - which I attribute to buzzing right off the bat. I swear by the BERP device and use it all the time. Lead pipe buzzing always seemed like a big pain, and I don't like fooling around, taking the tuning slide in and out. Any opinions? Has anyone gotten miraculous results with lead pipe buzzing?

Of course, it is. If you can manage to expand your range with the lips alone, you will be able to play with better form on the instrument as well. Just keep in mind that the correlation between lip buzzing and mouthpiece buzzing is not as pronounced as it is with the trumpet. When I buzz a trumpet low c on a trombone mouthpiece and then remove the mouthpiece while maintaining the buzz (or vice versa), I get a difference of about a half-step. When I buzz an octave higher, I get a difference of about a whole step. Note: It's not exactly the same effort. When you ascend even further, that difference might expand as well. In general, lip buzzing can be a very useful tool to work on form. Just make sure not to overdo it when you start off with it. Rest frequently as well. It shouldn't be too demanding in the "normal" trombone range, but be cautious. Start with a 30 seconds to a minute or so and expand the duration as you get stronger. Just a few minutes a day should be sufficient anyway. Rather focus on using good form. This is key. Hope this helps. All the best, Jens

I have a question. When I play my trumpet, I easily get tired after 2-3 songs being played. And then I’m unable to play higher notes than A above the staff. Why is that. Am I doing something wrong while playing?

HC houtx well, this can have several reasons. Maybe it’s just your state of development. Maybe you’re not using good form. Maybe you exaggerate with muscular activity... it’s impossible to diagnose your problems like this. Try to be more precise. So, what happens when you get to your top of your range? Are you pinching the lips together? Is one lip curling under? Are you using air volume to go higher? Are you just pressing? See? Could be literally anything...
