I felt they highlighted his genius rather well. He went to MIT and actually thrived, even became a TA. Unfortunately, that particular time in his life was when his family knee-deep in their gallagher ways and he was spread too thin, especially considering he is supposed to be only 18-19 years old at the time. Dealing with his family while thriving an a prestigious school is no joke. Unfortunately for Lip, his story's moral was 1 step forward, 3 steps back to the point where he couldn't recover. No matter how many chances he got.

@@emichael4846it was NOT MIT. It was a school in Chicago (the fictional Chicago Polytechnic). They dropped the idea of him at MIT for convenience of having him able to easily go back to the neighborhood

All of the eldest Gallaghers tended to fall the hardest for partners that were toxic or abusive towards them in some way - probably subconsciously replicating some of the chaos they experienced with their parents. Thankfully Mickey grew out a lot of his worst behaviors the more he fell for Ian and the more he distanced himself from his father. Not sure if Lip actually loved Tami, but at least he started aiming higher with his partners as he got older. Fiona unfortunately always loved the absolute worst dudes and couldn't seem to make herself care for the guys that treated her well.

Because people like him, who's given lots of talents rightaway don't appreciate them much. Those who work hard, developing their skills constantly, only those succeed. People like him could succeed if they didn't take things like that for granted, appreciate them, take chances. Lip was always told he's the dumbest smart guy ever. He had million chances, but blew up every single chance.
