I like that you kept your Kat Von D lipstick because you're right, you paid for it and keeping it vs not keeping it at this point won't affect Kat Von D. You can make the choice to not purchase from her in the future, but you can't change the past. I feel like everyone on reddit is really quick to want to throw away all the items they own if a brand becomes problematic or if they decide they want to go cruelty free, and I feel like it gets a little silly especially if they plan on purchasing brand new items to replace those ones that they're getting rid of. Also, I want to say that I REALLY enjoy this style of declutter video!!
@Subtitles_Addict6 жыл бұрын
Aimee Y I agree and disagree because sometimes the latter is more about having a peace of mind than anything else. Keeping my Kat Von D products made me mad every time I used them. It was a constant reminder of how dangerous and negligent anti-vaccine stances are. So even though the money was spent and I’m not making an impact with items already purchased, I couldn’t keep them. I didn’t want to be mad every time I opened the tube. I can understand why people keep them though, just saying sometimes not keeping has another motive.
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that if it's making you feel mad or bad, it should go! If I had a lot of Kat Von D makeup or if I had really loved her brand, I might have felt more betrayed and frustrated by what happened, and been more likely to actually get rid of things. As it is, I just have this one lipstick and I've never had much interest in her, so the lipstick is kind of disassociated from the brand in my mind, if that makes sense. But I'm curious to see if I can actually bring myself to use it again. I haven't yet.

I agree Aimee and Hannah! I own a few KVD items (*very* few- her goth scheme doesn’t speak to me nor is it flattering, and I actually sold my Shade and Light unused after several months because it was so uninspiring).. though what I do have is my holy grail- her tattoo liner is the only liner I can use on my upper lid as I can’t draw a line to save my life.. and idc what “they” say, no , Stila and NYX are not dupes. I can most certainly separate the brand from the person. I will continue to buy without apology or guilt. It’s funny, people will and do buy from brands who their face is just shown at every turn to be a deeply unpleasant and unkind individual. Someone who I would rather own no makeup at all than contribute a single $ to his dynasty of superego. I don’t begrudge those who do because they may be separating the person from the brand. But I feel like those people can’t have it both ways. They “come for you” if you reveal you aren’t boycotting KVD, but choose to support distasteful others because it may be inconvenient not to. You can’t have it both ways 🙃 Btw, aside from tattoo liner in trooper, the entirety of my KVD “collection” is my sole red lippie (I feel silly in red) idk the name, Ludwig, Lolita , and Lolita 2.

One of my favorite things about your channel (and why I watch it from both of my accounts) is that you talk about makeup like designers talk about fashion. It's honestly very unique and (again, I am thinking Donna Karan 7 easy pieces) how I like most to think about my makeup.

That was certainly lot of work listing and categorizing the products and putting in the time stamps! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on as you went through each item. I have ‘multiple shades of nude lip color that seem to vary in the packaging but on my lips translate to pretty much the same color. I’m committed to stop buying the same nude shade hidden in different packaging. I am actively panning a selected assortment of lip products that once they are gone, these particular ones will not be a repurchase.

I think I'm that way with reds! The reds all seem so different, but on me they just look like...red lipstick. Even the ones that vary pretty dramatically in tone. Thanks for watching, Lisa! xo!

This was really satisfying -- I was inspired to give my lipstick collection another go even though it's already pretty edited. I loved that you showed the storage at the end. I also really enjoyed when you told stories about older lipsticks from your "normal girl" days. It reminded me of Marie Kondo's advice to express gratitude toward things you're getting rid of. If I could only take one piece of advice from her, that would be it; it's helped me part with so many items I was holding onto out of e.g., nostalgia.
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
That has helped me a lot, too! It was taking too much time to thank each thing individually on camera, but I had a chat with them afterwards :) I also like to do the opposite and declare "I love you!" to the things I'm keeping. It helps me not get tricked. Sometimes I think I want to keep something, but I can't quite bring myself to declare "I love you," and that tells me something.

I’m currently down to 20 lip products, not including lip balms, and I think this is the magic number for me. I have 3 lip glosses, 4 crazy fun lip colors, 4 my lips but better variations, 4 deep winter colors, 3 bright summery colors, and 2 true reds- one blue leaning and one neutral. My lip colors will be on a 1 in 1 out basis from the end of my RONB on. I know that 20 may seem like a large number, but it allows me a great variety, and I’m very happy with my selection. It was interesting to hear your thought process behind keeping, panning or discarding your lip products. BTWs that Givenchy Coral Watermelon color is EV-ER-Y-THING. I need you to wear that in a video I think that sometimes MUR takes too hard of a line on aspirational makeup. The truth is, you’ll never reach your aspirations unless you have things to bring you there. I bought $150 running shoes after 2 weeks of being a runner. Could I have stopped the next day, YUP! But because I had invested in my aspirations I reached them and I have a 10k in two weeks and a marathon in February! Do I think you should blow your budget on aspirational makeup? Absolutely not! But I do think 2-5 aspirational purchases a year, within reason of course, are great because they can lead or cause you to grow as a person.
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with what you say about aspirational things! Aspiring is how we grow, and some of my coolest and best makeup products are things I bought because I aspired to be cooler and better, and now I love those things (and I guess I feel cooler and better?). This would be a good video topic! 20 doesn't seem like a lot to me. I'm happy with my 27, but I could se getting down to 20 via using up a few things and sticking with that. A collection of lip products is one of the most space-effective ways to have variety in your makeup looks, I think.
@MeridaEllaSDB6 жыл бұрын
I see it as a color wardrobe. The trick is like any wardrobe; curate a functional collection, not just stuffing a dressing room with anything. I'm gaining on lip colors. I want to add sepia and pumpkin spice, fireside cocoa shades, a gloss dupe of Sugar Sugar, Brooklyn Thorn, as well as a few neutral nude colors. I have more than 20 shoes to go with various outfits. I need more than my favorite color, Nyx London, to fulfill my edgier artistic directions, on the days I fell it to do so. I also believe that to get my use out of something does not immediately denote panning it. I don't wear my interview or special occasion outfits often, or worn to the threads, but they are still good purchases.

I enjoyed this. I've been letting some thoughts about panning percolate in my mind for a while. I love panning projects and videos, but there is such a weird, and to me illogical, thing about "I'll focus on using this thing that I like up/getting my value" while the things that I *love* sit by unused (or used less than they could be). With a collection the size that many of us have, things are going to go bad. Given that they are already purchased and I can't go back and not purchase them, I figure that realizing that now and changing my purchasing patterns while also focusing on using those things that I love most up, makes the most sense.
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about panning! I think about this a lot. That's why I decided to keep one group of things that I like "enough to pan," rather than just trying to use everything up. (It's also nice to have the variety.) But I will continue to use my favorites whenever I feel like it. I don't understand hate panning or forcing yourself to use up bad products before reaching for your good ones! I might talk about this in a video soon.

I am LIVING for this video! You articulate your thoughts so well and I loved every moment of listening to your process of deciding what to keep and why. Your no-buy journey has been incredibly inspiring to me! Hearing your thoughts throughout the process encourages me to assess my relationship with consumerism more whole-heartedly and to think much more critically about my purchases. One change I’ve noticed is that I mentally process my repurchases more thoroughly so that I’m positive that I’m happy repurchasing that very product. Similarly, on the rare occasion that I do purchase a new product, I’ve started making myself wait 5 to 7 days before ordering it and in the interim judging it against my current collection so that I can be more positive that it serves a good purpose in my modest makeup & skincare collection. Yours is my favorite channel currently and I’ve started re-watching your old videos for a second time!

Lipstick is what inspired my whole declutter/panning mission back in January- found my Holy grail formula (maybelline matte ink) and neglected everything else for a few months. Realized I was storing everything for nothing and they'd expire and be a waste of my cash if I didn't start panning and stop acquiring. I've gotten rid of so many this year by giving to friends and panned about three others (with two more about to be done soon). I can't wait until my collection is closer to the size of yours!

congrats on your progress! Lipstick is also what inspired my no-buy, in a way. Your eye look here is super flattering! Your declutters are so thorough. I miss my Tarte Lipsurgence. It was my favorite lipstick formula after the Revlon Lip Butters were discontinued. This video came at the perfect time because I am in the middle of decluttering and need the motivation. 🙂 For some reason I find myself having trouble getting rid of beloved favorites like some VERY OLD Kate Spade or my Bésame Cosmetics’ lipsticks. They are no longer wearable but it is the packaging that keeps me holding on! One habit I am going to quit is buying the same shade in multiple brands. I have so many oranges and corals that are dupes for each other. Future purchases will be colors I want to try wearing like sheer browns and berries. Both color families missing from my collection. Looking forward to next edition.

it's amazing that people can move lipsticks around like that! For me, I find it cathartic to let go of old products that I'm no longer using (even if they are in beautiful packaging), especially because I have so much else that I love and AM using. If re-using the packaging would make you feel amazing, then go for it! But you could also just recycle it. Right now, since they are no longer useable, all you have it the memory of using the lipsticks. You will still have that memory after you get rid of them, and you'll have some space back!

I think the Tarte lipsurgence line has been discontinued. They went on massive sale about a year ago, and presumably have been selling out existing stock since. I see they are still on the website, but moody is out of stock, meaning it probably won't ever come back. I could be wrong though, because as I'm trying to google it, I can't find anything definitive. Anyway, if you really do want to repurchase it or at least "dupe the vibe", I would save it for reference/to swatch against. I love declutter videos. This reminds me of Sarah Hubler's style, who has my favorite declutters - nicely done!

I am not positive but the Clinique Black Honey lipstick might be a pretty good dupe for Moody. It’s a glossy, sheer brownish berry type of color.
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
I think you are all right! SAD! And guess what...I actually do own clinique black honey, it somehow escaped this declutter by hiding among my lip balms, but I've already filmed my balm/gloss declutter and I mentioned on camera that black honey is probably the next best thing to tarte moody! Great minds think alike! I did swatch them next to each other, though, and black honey doesn't have that ruddy/rusty undertone (it's more berry). I'll keep an eye out for a closer dupe, but in the meantime it's a good one to have.
@Puglover1306 жыл бұрын
I believe the original lip surgence is discontinued as posted, however in their blurb it looks like they revamped it into a lipsurgence pencil; they mentioned it being the same formula but skinnier and less likely to feather/ migrate outside the lipline. HOWEVER, unfortunately they don’t seem to carry Moody or a facsimile.. they have a sheer berry but nothing as “ruddy” or edgy as Moody, I’m afraid. The sheer berry looks more like a dark raspberry

I cant believe it but after looking at my collection i only have 1 red which is the Cruella birthday gift. And everything else is a purplish/ mauve/dark berry

Wow! And I have so many reds and so few berries :)

Me too! In fact almost all my lip products save balms/glosses are almost all very similar (mauvey brown in subtle shade variations) I have my safe colours and I feel silly in red. I have exactly 1 red which is by KVD. I do have a sheer red that’s simply beautiful, part of the new Tarte line. Very wearable.

I loved the Tarte lipsurgence formula and was devastated when it was discontinued.

Do you have any videos of you wearing faded clementine? We're similar skintones and I can't imagine such a true orange looking good on me!
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
yes, I'm actually wearing it in the intro to the "five days of blush" video that just went up! It's pretty built up in that video; I usually blot it for a softer and less pigmented effect.

Love this video! Would love to hear your thoughts on your favourite lip treatments, balms and liners. Ps what do you mean when you say pan lipsticks? Love from Ireland x

Panning a lipstick is using it up until there's little or nothing left. The same term can be used for any makeup product - panning eyeshadow, panning blush, etc . Comes from "hitting pan"
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
glosses and balms are up next! "Pan" just means "use it up." It originated from the concept of hitting pan in an eyeshadow, but now everyone seems to be using it even for products that aren't in pans! Sending a hug from LA :)

I was thinking about buying the UD Born to Run lipstick in 66... a neutral mauve lipstick. I took ALL of my neutral lipsticks to ulta to swatch with 66. 🤣 I didn't make that purchase lol

I really love your style of videos. I could not find honolulu honey anywhere in their color choices of bite beauty amuse bouche lipsticks. maybe discontinued? The NARS satin and matte lip pencils are my favorites. Tom Ford lipstick $55 insane. I'd never pay that. I thought CT was bad at $36 wow! I guess they discontinued Het Loo also cause I can't find that one either and I used your link and also did search on sephora web site maybe its on NARS website? I'll check it out.

Hi Angela! You are so right about Het Loo, I totally forgot that they stopped carrying it at Sephora! They have it at Nordstrom's, I recently bought it there as a birthday gift for a friend. Honolulu Honey is a Nars lipstick, not Bite, but I don't see it on Sephora, either. It could be discontinued?

Love this collection video, you have a lot of red lippies! I tried a no buy for this year and its just ending up as a low buy 😂 at least its not as much as last year haha

I know, I hadn't realized what a red lipstick junkie I am before I filmed this! It honestly makes me want to wear my reds more often. If you want to try a full on no-buy, maybe consider joining no-buy October! I'll post a video about it on the first of the month.

Interwebs back up so I can finish watching! I love your 4 piles idea! I might (will) be stealing this for my series next year. :-)
@HannahLouisePoston6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah! Please do steal it! It really helps me to have the "loves" pile and the "like enough to pan" pile. I also think of group 2 as being the "continued testing" pile, so the next time I declutter my lipsticks those are the ones that will be on the chopping block. xoxo!
