I was privileged to have been part of the chorus of this production. The chorus was made up of the Phildelphia Opera Chorus, Phildelphia Choral Arts Society (i think that was the name) and the Baltimore Symphony Chorus which i was part of. It was a once in a lifetime experience !!

Hello @JohnFranklin. What an amazing experience it must have been! I have to admit, I am new to this “genre” (for lack of a more appropriate/respectful description) and I am extremely curious, it says it was at the Philadelphia Spectrum, was the Spectrum merely a stage, a set, a recording studio if you will, or was this a live event in front of an audience? A search for the Philadelphia Spectrum is what brought me here, and I’m surprisingly confused by the setup. I did not watch the entire performance from start to finish, but in scanning through I found the setup quite unique to put it mildly. I understand that I am replying to a nearly decade old thread, but decided to throw it out into the World Wide Web with the hopes that maybe somebody can shed some light on this or this type of event. Was it live at the Spectrum in front of an audience, or was it merely staged at and recorded in the Spectrum? I never hear applause, so I can reach some sort of conclusion on my own, but I’m still rather intrigued by such an event staged in the historic arena. I would think that there would be many places in Philadelphia to stage such an event; was the Spectrum chosen or known for it acoustics or sound? As I mentioned, I’m just intrigued; thank you in advance for any and all contributions.
@@krachel99 I can answer for John, as I was also in the enormous chorus! :) This was a live performance in front of more than 10,000 people at the since-demolished Spectrum arena, where the Flyers and 76ers played for decades. There was no applause heard until the very end because of the nature of the requiem mass. It's one large work, start to finish. No "breaks" in any conventional sense. It was truly one of the most exciting experiences of my life.

My one and only time here on KZbin that I can say, "Hey, that's me!" Granted, just one of hundreds in that very large combined chorus, but still... My God, what an extraordinary experience it was for a then twenty year old member of the outstanding Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia to be singing one of the great works, led by Lorin Maazel and headlined by Luciano freaking Pavarotti! A peak life experience, for sure. "Thank you thank you!" to the poster of the video, as my VHS copy was lost along the way somewhere these past 35 years.

First time I've heard this performance of the Verdi Requiem. The quality of the orchestra, soloists, and chorus all sound superb. It's unfortunate the quality of the recording is so poor. I would love to have heard this performance live. Very powerful.

I was in this performance as well (Opera Company of Philadelphia chorus) and I've always said that the the Requiem is my favorite Verdi opera! I'm actually riveted at how good it really is. Back then, it was so huge, it seemed just a bit gimmicky (at least to me). Very grateful to be able to hear it again from a distance. The soloists, including Pavarotti, are all committed and are all excellent. A very moving performance. Thanks for posting.

I was in the chorus and remember it well. It really must have been a great night in the arena. A number of people in the audience commented that it was surprisingly clear even though the reverb in the room was 7 or 8 seconds. The audience was around 14,000 or 15,000 if I recall. It was well organized and Maazel was able to keep it together beautifully. Its great to see it here and relive the night.
@krachel99 Жыл бұрын
@arnoldziffelpig there was a live audience; an audience of 14,000 - 15,000? Because it was from the Philadelphia Spectrum, I’ve been trying to recognize anything even remotely familiar to no avail. I just inquired about the same thing on a different comment. I don’t recognize this as a packed house at the Spectrum.

This performance is even better than I remembered. All four soloists use their amazing voices beautifully. Burchuladze must have one of the biggest voices ever heard in this music. And both the ladies sing as beautifully as any of the more famous singers that have recorded the Requiem. And the chorus is among the best among all youtube performances of the Requiem.

This is a very good video and sound recording , these are 4 excellent soloists , the balance between is very important , this isn't opera and purity of tone is all important . I accept the compliments to Susan Dunn , but Ildiklo Komlosi is a superb mezzo soprano and their voices combine in perfect harmony . Pavarotti has been unrivaled for many years , Paata Burchuladza is a great bass . The Verdi Requiem has been a great favourite since I was given a complete set on 78s for Christmas when I was 16yrs . The singers were Maria Caniglia , Ebe Stignani , Beniamino Gigli and Ezio Pinza , I have always considered this 1939 recording the best ever , having 4 of the greatest principals of the 20th century . Another great recording is with Karajan 1967 , Leontyne Price , Fiorenza Cossotto , Luciano Pavarotti and Nicholai Ghiaurov . I am enjoying this recording immensely on my 55" TV with surround sound , thank you LiricaMondo .

WOW! What a gem. Much thanks for posting! In comparing this performance of Pava's to the early ones, one can tell a slight reduction in power, clarity of tone, and ease of production, but its more than made up for in emotion, color of voice, and placement. One can tell by the expression on his face that Pava was not pleased w/the first few notes, but settled in nicely tho it appeared to take abit more effort than usual---such concentration! The "Hostias" were exquisite, and I still expect to

To hear what Susan can really do with this piece (this TV audio isn't the greatest), get the CD/MP3 version she did with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony. Her voice is the purest clarion call over the entire orchestral tutti in the "Libera Me". She is absolutely astounding!
@whyislifesohard10 жыл бұрын
Shaw's is my very favorite recording of this sumptuous piece to date, and I must say that my decision decision rests largely on Susan's expert musicianship and impassioned vocal expressions. Dunn's interpretation is beyond mind-boggling... The best interpreter of this work. However, I find Maazel's tempi too artificial, he drags/slows down a bit in some parts, only to direct attention towards himself. I think had Chailly conducted this, it'd have been the most important recording of them all. They had a special thing going on between each other. Also the recording with Robert Shaw deserves a lot of merit.
