Man as someone that rents cars often I saw this becoming a problem pretty quickly. It was scary seeing so many other people's information. I went ahead and deleted all as much as I could including my own when I was done using it, but it was really time consuming hassle. I told Enterprise they should delete all the data on the cars they rent out as soon as they get them back because this can quickly become a big problem for them in the future, but who knows if they listened. I'm REALLY happy someone finally made a video addressing it and validating what I figured as well.

Sometimes those infotainment systems have a factory reset option that is supposed to clear out the old data. It likely even unpairs any devices that were paired also. I don't know where you would find it but I found it on my vehicle while poking around in the settings for anything I might decide to adjust. They are all going to be a little bit different so a search for infotainment system factory reset on any specific vehicle may help. It may even be different on the same model vehicle in different model years if there was a major revision or just a change to someone else's software instead.

Sadly, I do not believe the rental agency would do the right thing. Those "infotainment" systems do just that: Collect "info" from unsuspecting users. That's why it's up to you (and me) to be vigilant with personal data. I don't often rent a car, but I'll be on the lookout from now on and make sure to delete my info from the infotainment system. Special thanks to you, @LironSegev, for posting this.

@@LironSegev This is why rental cars are so stressful for me. I had a dispute with a rental company over a small scratch. They are supposed to record such things before renting out the vehicle, but some don't. They ARE more likely to look carefully at the vehicle when it is returned. Luckily I had taken photos with my phone before driving away, and so they had to accept that the scratch was already there when I rented it, because of the time stamp.

Great video Liron!! I've been doing this for years. When I get a rental, first thing I do is delete ALL phones from the Infotainment system. Then I'll allow mine to connect, but of course at the end of the rental, I'll make sure to delete my info as well, AND remove the car from my phone as a device. Another thing I do is take a bunch of photos from all around the car when I pick it up, as well as drop it off. Yes, I get the mileage and gas gauge too. Hertz for me has been known to ignore the gas level and just charge for a full tank regardless. They always do it after the fact, so I've got the initial receipt as well as the gas level pic. I'm always nice when I ask them to remove it....and they are nice to do just that. Course I try not to rent from Hertz anymore. Pains me because I had many years of great service from them in the 80's/90's/2000's. Thanks! Funny story on "connecting to the wrong car". I had flown out for work from San Francisco, but due to an emergency, I came back home via Sacramento. My sister and I hopped in my 2nd car to go pick up my daily driver at SFO. Once we got in the car, my phone kept connecting to the daily driver behind me. My 2nd car didn't have bluetooth. Then I got a call from work, which my sister answered in my car behind me. Pretty funny but exactly to your point of connecting to the wrong car.

Long term renter here and yes, the info is stored. Perhaps there’s a data waiver of some sort mentioned in the agreement because the company does NOT delete previous renters. A guy at the rental place even mentioned casually that Tesla’s have some sort of recording device and will auto record in and out of the vehicle. I haven’t looked into that, but if you plan on renting a Tesla, you might want to ask more questions. Privacy and security is such an issue and no one seems to care. Smh.

I literally experienced getting the same car weeks later and it just connected right away. Totally caught me off guard. I've rented a few cars in my life, and since connecting phones to cars is a thing, the cars' infotainment systems were always reset to factory defaults when I got the car. So before I return it, I always do just that. I think the staffs of the car rental companies here are instructed to do that anyway, because I have never taken over a car where there was information about the previous customer. Way back, however, when cars only had sat navs and no bluetooth, last visited destinations could be called up a few times.

I just bought a new car with the usual bells and whistles. Initially, I struggled with the infotainment system until a neighbor suggested using CarPlay. My car requires that the phone be plugged into the car, and it worked fine other than the hassle of having to plug in the phone. I later bought a dongle that gave we a wireless connection, and very quickly recognized that using Google Maps via CarPlay for a relatively short 25 mile trip around town depleted 50% of my phone battery. Yikes! No way would that work for an 8 hour road trip. So my conclusion is that it makes more sense to me to just learn how to use the systems that come on the car rather than try to use CarPlay or Android Auto.

Thank you for your excellent advice and info you provided Liron. You certainly got my attention. I very rarely rent cars and have never used Apple car play or the Android equivalent. However I have been thinking about retro fitting this tech into one of our cars and being very tech cautious your expose' of this disturbing lack of tech security it made me think of other scenarios. If you have this entertainment tech installed in your vehicle what is to stop anybody accessing all your private information stored on it (as you demonstrated) whenever you have it serviced or repaired or valet parked or in any other situation where you allow someone to drive it ? It seems it would be the same if you handed your phone to another person without any security lock on it and allowed uninhibited access to all the outstanding nfo on it. Are there any security restrictions on these devices other than your car keys/locks ? It seems ait is another example of being enamoured by the wonders of technology without considering the implications and consequences of it use.

We just bought a used 2020 Tacoma from a used car dealer. The previous owner was a rental agency. I checked, and it full of info from rental customers. I've got some deleting to do. Thanks for the heads up.

1:13 Just a thought, imo, you should probably black out sensitive information instead of blurring them. we now live in the age where you can literally recover blurred info using neural networks

Excellent channel. I've been traveling lately and clean up the pairing menu most of the time. I also do this on the T.V.s. people leave there Netflix credentials on the TVs a lot too.

I don’t even use it in my own car(2017)! Because if it stolen, car service or accident! And I realize this in 2009! The SUV I owned was in accident (totaled) and all my belongings went with it including the info I never used! Looking out also for family and friends by not using! You see back in the day they (dealers) would put your home address in them too! I switched my address to my job! So, your car is stolen and house break in 😢… making it easy for 🤨 Don’t forget GPS😮 Thank you 👑

I used to believe my younger sister (now a legal professional) was smart, but in the past year or so I have discovered she has done several things that makes her seem surprisingly daft. In addition to her having TikTok on her phone (considering what we've heard about that app spying on any device connected to the same network it is on, I am glad I use my separate network for my Internet browsing), she linked up her phone to my mother's car and when I borrow said car to do errands, if my sister is in the middle of a call, that call is immediately patched through to the car and I can hear everything that is said before I drive the car far enough to break the call. PLEASE listen to Segev's advice and never connect your phone to ANY car you drive.

This is why I only use my phone on speaker or an aftermarket device for bluetooth. I also use a handheld gps for trips, always try to minimize how much personal is floating around...

Simple way around this, almost everyone has an old phone, make sure you completely erase it and just use it for maps and music, done and dusted. Then all you need to remember is to erase your map history.

This applies to company vehicles too! If your company has ‘pool’ vehicles you need to do the same thing.

Car rental companies really need to add a checklist for each make and model to wipe the infotainment system after each rental. I suspect most are probably unaware of the problem, but even if made aware, they would not be interested in implementing such a solution because it would cost them money.
