Here's the thing, if someone is going to jump turnstyles, and not pay fares, getting a ticket is not going to change anything. But arresting people for at least a week jail, will deter people from not paying their fare.

And sometimes it’s a matter of a lost ticket. Happened to me; lost the paper ticket and turns out I had left it at home. I mailed that in when I found it…imagine going to jail for something so simple!

@@NEbluefire I agree up to an extent…for simple things like this, no one should be going to jail unless they racked up like thousands in tickets cause then obviously, the tickets aren’t doing their job as a deterrent. But poverty and mental health aren’t an excuse for all the other crap that goes on in the subway; the slashings, the fights, the shoves onto the train tracks, the literal cans of fire being tossed at people. Some people need to be locked up for the safety of others regardless of their backgrounds.

Metro North & LIRR allow customers to buy tickets before boarding or pay extra with the Conductor. A little different than NYC Subway turnstiles or NYC buses. I do remember when MTAPD would be at the next station for knuckleheads and fare beaters for LIRR/Metro North.

Fare evasion spike increase. If NYPD will add fare inspector check the passenger must require ticket, OMNY card and MetroCard. If the passenger not have ticket, OMNY card and MetroCard and could be eject from MTA including fined or arrest

Occasionally use the city ticket to avoid subway issues (honestly that ticket should be $3). So far only ONCE did they check tickets at the door leading to the platform, and then they checked again on board. That was about a month ago.

Got laid off 2 1/2 years ago. Never used to hop the train, but now i never pay. Why pay when you see people hopping and there are no repercussions? Why pay when the MTA doesn't bother to kick bums off the subway? Plus, back in the day, the clerks in the token booth could actually sell you a token or metrocard. Now they sit on their asses doing nothing and collecting checks.

Jersey Transit been cracked down on the bathroom hack. So we buy child tickets which is incredibly cheap and most of the conductors let you slide unless they really care about their job but 8/10 times it would work.

I've heard many anecdotes where conductors simply don't collect tickets during people's entire journeys (this also happened to me a couple times), and where people activate e-tickets as late as possible to try to cheapen their fares as much as possible. With LIRR having lost $44 million to fare evasion in 2022, what people already need to do doesn't matter as much if conductors aren't doing their jobs consistently. Maybe fares/tickets can be lowered and more off-peak service can be run if gates did the checking for them.

Only the NYC transit systems keep complaining about fare evasion. No other big city has this issue. Most likely, many people still work from home and instead of accepting the drop in ridership, they are making fare evasion a bogeyman. These transit agencies are overstaffed and maybe they should put some of their staff to work to check the dates instead of complaining about fare evasion. And, for a change, make some real improvements to the service and increase speeds.

@@arthurbb8937 They have mentioned that numerous times in the past. They have it on the trains, in the app etc. The people that hide or argue with the conductor are nothing new. What is new though is buy and activate your ticket on your phone. And not have it "collected" I learned my lesson the last time I was in town. Don't activate my ticket until the conductor comes. Or use old school tickets if I have the time and I'm in town long enough for it to matter

@@albundy06 I understand that point but it was not the point of this particular story. It focused on people who had no intention on paying. What you're talking about is more a moral issue. Don't pay because they often don't collect tickets or pay no matter what because you're using the service. That too could be a separate but interesting story. I have ridden commuter rails in a while but I always used a monthly paper ticket that the company paid for and they just punched a hole in it. Is it all electronic now? I love paper and still use cash whenever I can. I would hate using a phone to use ticket while on board. I'm an old soul so I don't count.
