Someone needs to bring this kind of music back. I loved the orchestral pop of this era. So many of the best songs used strings and pianos and woodwinds. It was an incredible period for music.

So much of that "sound" diminished with the loss of orchestration, esp. strings.

It was '89-'94. A lot of songs with that type of melody. It was amazing. I wish it had lasted forever but it didn't. I'll never forget in '89 I first heard it off of Soul to Soul. Their smash hit "back to life". I'll never forget how modern it sounded when I first heard it. And still to this day I get that sensation like no other. An amazing time. Maxi Priest "Close to You" was another one.

Christmas 1989 I left my 5 month old son with my parents to finish law school. I was miserable without him and I decided to fly home to get him before the end of the term in February 1990. When I got there my Mom showed me videos my Dad took while he was there. This song was playing in the background on one while he was taking his first steps in his walker. Every time I hear it, I am transported back to that time! Forever one of my favorite songs! I’m here in May 2024 and still loving it!

Every time I hear this song, I am transported back to 1990. I'm walking through the mall with my dad. The mall is bustling with thousands of people, long before the internet would destroy the mall experience. Every store was open for business. The teenagers all went there to flirt and have a good time. You could smell the food court from anywhere in the main hall. You could hear the sound of the arcade. And Lisa Stansfield, just singing her beautiful heart out. I miss it so much.

First time I heard this song i was with my momma her boyfriend and my siblings. We were in Houston for the first time riding through downtown admiring all the tall buildings and happy just to be there. Later that day we all went to Astro World and had a freaking blast. That night as we headed back to my Aunt Chris's house we were in a hit and run. Us kids were riding in the back of a pick up truck tired from the days events. Man that was scary to experience. Thank God we all survived and we're all living happily with our own kids and significant others.. Though my mom now has Alzheimer's I'd like to think she remembers this beautiful weekend as well. I was 9 at the time and recall it well. Gosh, I miss those days.

This song reminds me of the day my grandmother passed away, in 1989. We’d driven to my grandparents home and things had quieted down. I was in the living room and this video came on. My mom was crying in her old room next to the living room. I just stood in front of the tv, trying to drown the sound out with the music. I wish I’d turned it off, because it’s taken me about 30 years to listen to the entire song. Some months later, it came on the radio. I mentioned it had come on the day she passed away. My mom said, “It surely did!” R.I.P. to my grandmother and mother. They were two of the sweetest people I’ve ever known.

Brenda Johnson: you are 100% correct! For anyone who was a teenager or young adult (15 to 30) back in the 60s/70s/80s/90s, we really came of age in the GOLDEN ERA of the music business. It's amazing to think that teenagers and college age students were listening to such a joyful and sophisticated song like this back in 1989! No auto-tune/insults/n-words/b-words/c-words/sampling. Just well crafted songs, with great musicianship, created by very talented musicians/vocalists! The musical standards were much higher than they are today - for sure. For those of us who "lived it" back in 1989, we really did not know how enduring the contemporary music we were listening to, would become. I am so glad I was there! In closing, thanks to Lisa Stansfield and the musicians who created this masterpiece. Thanks to you Brenda for letting me share! Enjoy! Cheers, Sam.

That scene from Dahmer took me right back to my early childhood in the 90s. The clothes, the music, the atmosphere of them going out. The first show I have seen in a long time that just nailed the atmosphere of the period in question perfectly. All the others just make it a bit too colorful and flashy (especially the 80s, but this I don't remember).
