I love how this game depicts drug use. You can go days without eating or drinking, but Brad always feels an intense desire for Joy over those things. Drug addicts know the drugs will harm their bodies, but their lives are so miserable that they don't even care. This is why DARE was so ineffective. We don't have Joy in this world, but we do have monsters created by a combination of drug abuse and despair. And that's really what the game is a metaphor for.

Then again, I usually gravitated towards party members that didnt have a Joy addiction, so if Brad was going through withdrawal, the other three could pick up the slack while he chucked fireballs. I think Joy would be more of a vice if you had REALLY shit luck when it came to your recruits getting permadeathed, got your guys taken by gangs, or went through the roulette to get Buckets. Otherwise, as long as you know your stuff, you'd be fine, even on Pain Mode.

@@ajgameguy3674 ok its 1AM and in the mood soooo talking about joy lore wise, its such a sad fate, you dont realy think about it until you see the effects play out or its aftermath, every single party member whos addicted to joy or only took once in your playthrough is bassicaly bound to a fate worse then death unless you just quickly take their life while they are still human, its sad when you think about people like birdie, he went through a lot in his life to resort to bottling up his feelings with alchahool and drugs, and im sure he deep down regrets it and thinking about it from an outside view, when you are alone in olathe, if you arent trully competent in a fight agaist like 3-4 men youll have no chance of defeating a joy mutant unless its realy docile, and even then they can just snap and take a mans life in a blink of an eye, and aside from buddy, there was never a cure for joy, so becoming a joy mutant is inevitable once you are hooked, and its even worse because most people dont even know the drug does such things, we know what the effects are, crystal clear, but your random olathian dunder head wont have a clue

I've always loved battling the Joy mutants. Nightmarish bodies, unpredictable, and provided a challenge to keep your entire team alive (especially for Rex Thunderstorm and Peter). Always hated having to start over because they would perma-kill a party member I actually liked lmao

Rex Thunderstom in particular is way stronger than most Joy mutants because his normal attack moves that he has a higher priority of doing is Bike slam wich is allmost doubly powerfull then a regular wack attack from Joy mutants and it has a 80% stun chance with an 100% accuracy. his only other atacking move is neck break, and he has fewer useless skills

he's one of the weirder ones, he's very half baked compared to nearly every other joy mutant, no extensive mutation or growth, just nub hands. Doesn't scream when it dies like other joy mutants, but cries. I guess since he just went missing before you arrive hes beginning his transformation and not fully there yet.

Im in the minority, but rex thunderstorm is my favorite mutant. He looks the closest to a successful super soldier (what joy was meant for) he's one of the toughest enemies in the game, and his unique theme is even more intimidating than soft skin

Hang on, let me get my foil hat and Game Theory glasses... Maybe the reason the backgrounds look like bellybuttons specifically could help us draw a connection. Bellybuttons -> umbilical cords -> childbirth -> pregnancy -> repopulation of the Earth. The possible fate of Buddy, Brad's _teenage daughter,_ to be used as nothing but a breeding machine to repopulate a dying world, is something that is constantly in the back of his mind. His one goal is to save her from that fate, it's what his mind zeroes in on during battle, it's what gives him strength to fight at all - the sole desire to protect his daughter. To him there is little to no difference between any other man and these monstrous mutants. I also know there's a term in English, "navel gazing", but I only rarely heard it used by anyone, and I only vaguely know that it means something related to self-righteousness. Maybe actual native English speakers can draw a parallel here.
