I really appreciated how you broke things down and gave where to find other resources- we are training an older dog to be a service dog and while he is extremely smart and well-behaved- we are new at this and can use all the kind advice and tips we can find. Thank you-

Helpful! I'd like to see one on approaching hospitals and doctors offices, what to expect if the dog's purpose or tasks are not obvious to the untrained eye if you ever get a chance!
@LisaGallegos Жыл бұрын
I can do one but I’d first practice out of context (approaching a building) before taking your dog in training to a real appointment. The dogs purpose or tasks are not always obvious, and not really necessary for the general public to know. A staff member from the store can ask what they’re trained for in the US, but you can leave it general- “medical alert” “medication retrieval” etc. if you’re asking about the doctor- you can tell them directly what they’re trained for. You don’t have to “demo” it to them - for example someone with a seizure disorder cant or at least shouldn’t make themselves have a seizure to show them what their dog is capable of. Hopefully that makes sense!

Just Info for anyone who didn't know or got mislead by the video, but service dog certification isn't a real thing. An organization can say that they trained and PAT tested, but that doesn't make a dog "certified", or "registered". And if any company says that then its a scam because there is no such thing. But getting a documentation of service training can help if someone tries to kick you out for having a service dog or something like that. Hope this bit of knowledge helps clear up some things 😊👍

There isn’t - but some people choose to. If you watch my other videos I talk about this in depth and how it’s not required, but you should still test and evaluate your dog on your own if you’re self training. This is meant to help people who are self training so they can see what standard their dog should be trained to. Also, for those traveling internationally, it’s super helpful to work with an organization that is part of the ADI to make traveling a your dog easier. I put a lot of work into sharing this free video, so I find it extremely rude for you to comment “misled” as if posting a FREE video for people who are self training to watch is somehow trying to mislead people? 🫤

Helpful!!! 🎉 What do you recommend for the time of puberty? I remember very well, when my last dog was in puberty, he seemed to have forgotten all the basic training he had already learnt. He would markmy sons' luggage when they came to visit me, hardly responded when I gave a command, pulled and jumped into the leash when walking, jumped at guests when they were entering our home,.... My youngster was totally out of control. I was devastated. Does it even make sense to try to teach something new during this time of puberty? From one day to the next, my dog behaved superb again and followed all commands right away. It seemed as if he had been obsessed by a little demon for a couple of months, which had surprisingly showed up and suddenly vanished again.

I can relate! When my golden turned one she was in the middle of service dog training. It felt like she forgot everything! I was in tears. After about 2 months of continuing training she is back to herself and our training is progressing. It was rough .

My biggest question is for the public axis test when it comes to loading and unloading your service dog into a car how does that part of the test work if the handler does not drive or uses Lyft and Uber to get around? Does the evaluator have to watch the handler get out of the car and into the car or do they use public transit and evaluate that part of the test? I have been training Freja for over a year when it comes to public access. She does task naturally. People mistake Freja for a real service dog because she is so well-behaved in public. I have to tell them that she is technically in training. It is not a requirement in Washington state for a service dog in training to have an in training patch. Service dogs in training are not protected or have public access rights in Washington state. I do have public access rights when it comes to the county governments, I take Freja on public transportation and Lyft and Uber all the time. We have to work on distraction training still. I use the gentle lead to work on pulling and distractions . Freja has been around kids and other animals. I use my two cats as a training opportunity to work on Freja’s reactivity. I have not started her airport training yet. I do not take Freja on the escalators. I have a fear of going down escalators I do want to train Freja to go up an escalator with the trainer. Freja has been in elevators. I need to get her better shoes before I can train her on the escalators or moving sidewalks. Freja is used to being handled by other people. She is a typical golden retriever that loves everybody and is happy to be in public with mommy. Freja and I are still working on getting her into the AKC canine good citizen group class at Petco. For those of you that are looking to get your dog trained,check out your local Pet-smart and Petco for dog training classes. That is how I trained Freja the first time. I enrolled her in three Petco dog training classes.I had to retrain Freja when I first got her. She was already trained by her breeder. I started public access training Freja when she was four months old. I always make sure Freja goes to the bathroom before we get in a Lyft or Uber.

How can I find a trainer that does these tests? Also, how can I build up my skills to be able to administer these tests? Is there a certification for trainers to "prove" they can do these tests?
@DrSouss1176 ай бұрын
My dog passed her Good Citizen test at 10 months. I would love to train her to pass the PAT so that if we ever travel she can fly with me in the cabin rather than stuffed in cargo alone. Do I really need to have a disability in order for her to take and pass the PAT and become a certified service dog?

Lisa, I have two dogs that from their age and behavior aren’t qualified to be a service dogs. I do have doctors notes from both a psychiatrist and neurologist regarding a need for a service dog. I’m having trouble finding a qualified trainer in my area (South Florida, Delray Beach). Do you have any suggestions at what age I should begin training a service dog and finding a qualified professional to assist me? Thank you, JT.

Are service dogs in training allowed in public? Like the mall or whatever?

You’ll have to look at state law for that since they’re not covered under the ADA. What state are you in?

How does the administrator deal with an extra large service dog too large to fit under a table?
@LisaGallegos6 ай бұрын
The main goal is to just keep them as out of the way as possible. If they can’t fit under, then you can have them by your side. For the dogs safety, I do recommend at least keeping their legs/tail out of the way of foot traffic

Where can find help in San Antonio area? I’ve emailed trainers, but get no response. My boy Helios (GSD/Husky) is 1 1/2 years old and is my service pup. I’m training myself and need help teaching him to fetch a water bottle, notice changes in heart rate, block for me, potty on command, and BRACE to help me get up. Any tips would be appreciated.

How do I train public access if he gets distracted too easily? Like...I wanna train him to be calm in public, but since he isn't already trained, he becomes a problem for strangers, you know?

So if the testing is not required, seem like anyone can just say their dog is a sd
@LisaGallegos9 ай бұрын
Technically, it's illegal for just anyone to say it, but yes, you're right it wouldn't be easy to 'catch,' However, people do...and here's why... if your dog damages property, injured someone, etc you’d be legally liable, and then when they find out you have no training logs/no need for one, you would be in big trouble! It’s hard because you don’t want a public list of “people with a disability” but it does leave room for people to say their pet is a service dog. You can usually tell though whether they take the responsibility seriously based on the handler and how they're managing the dog. Also, the ADA states reasonable accommodations so a dog barking or causing a ruckus can get kicked out of a store. So yes, while you’re right while testing isn't required, it's illegal to falsely claim a pet is a service dog. My analogy is...it's not legal to 'recklessly drive' - but just because you only get in trouble if you get caught, doesn't mean you should.

Please dont use helmet as drop items! they are rated for a certain amount of impacts, and its typically thown away after one or two harsh impacts for safety reasons!
