Flights from HNL to Japan are quite expensive now. Heard about ZipAir; was wondering if you would seriously recommend it? Are there major cons to flying the airline? Mahalo!
@LisaAndJosh Жыл бұрын
We would definitely take zipair again. It was way nicer than a lot of budget airlines we’ve taken in the states and abroad. Aside from the long check in line at HNL, the flight went smoothly, it was clean and comfy, there was free WiFi, no food, so we brought our own musibis and bought saimin on the flight for $5.

Just a comment on eating while walking, I was told the first time back in the 80's when I first went there for work. When you are eating while walking, you are taking food too casually, and forget to pay respect to the people who grew/made it and the souls of the organisms who perished in the process. You are supposed to cherish your food.

Thanks for the context! Yes, we’ve learned a lot about this idea and the reasons since then. Love this concept-the idea of intentionally eating and taking time for it and the people who made it vs hurrying along our day. Something we definitely can learn from in our everyday lives for sure

5:22 I saw on another KZbin channel hosted by a Japanese person, that this Ramen spot is overpriced and average tasting and the private booths are considered gimmicky by local Japanese. Many tourists go there for some reason. Anybody else heard this?
@Maleka808 Жыл бұрын
To answer your question about walking and eating being frowned on, it's not just in Tokyo, it is almost everywhere you go in Japan...with certain exceptions. But from what I heard, it is discouraged because it is considered rude behavior. Why is it considered rude? I'm not exactly sure, but as you know, people in Japan are very considerate, so my educated guess, being a 3rd generation American-Japanese and having friends and relatives in Japan, is that they don't want people to walk around eating food and possibly dropping it on the ground where others can step on it...and still others need to clean it up. That's why most places in Japan are so clean! It's not usual for Japanese to talk off their shoes if they want to stand on a public bench to see something. Also, you must know that one of the reasons why Japan is so clean, especially in the cities, is that volunteers (people living in each community, business employees, business community associations, etc.) keep the streets clean, in addition to public workers. Japanese people really take pride in keeping the community clean. If you want to learn more, here's a really good video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eICqfp6do8hlj7s.

Love the videos and your personality/style, makes it easy to watch. Not sure if I'm missing something, are the places in the video actually mentioned? I saw other people mention things like "you hit all the spots" type of comments, but never really saw specifics; the description on the vid doesn't say anything except gear, how to connect and support. (The sights are largely obvious, more interested in the food spots)

I am Japanese. When you come to Japan, the first place you should go is an electric shop. Therefore, it would be a good idea to get a device called "POKE TALK" that converts your native language into Japanese and speaks with your voice. With this device, you can communicate by 'voice'ing the language to the other person instead of expressing it in writing. Supports many languages. French, Italian, German, Chinese, Korean, Japanese... Translate into any language and tell the other party by "voice". A perfect device for those who love to travel to different countries. A big hit in Japan. This is due to the rapid increase in the number of tourists from abroad. It is a very useful device for those who like to travel abroad. The size is about palm size.

The walking while eating is not allowed in Japan because people are in a hurry and might bump on to you causing more trouble. Also you can't walk fast while eating as well. It's basically rude to eat while walking. There are spaces on the side for people to finish their food and then proceed to their next stop.

Japanese culture generally prohibits walking and eating, AKA "tabe-aruki," because it crowds the streets where everyone walks and promotes littering. Prohibiting tabearuki also helps the vendors when people passing by see a crowd of people munching on their products.

Japanese are generally more observant of etiquette when eating, so it doesn't surprise me that they would frown on walking around slurping food.
