@adhsu1013 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I also disagree with with calling that a mistake. My metric of success in a design is how well it accomplish the feel or tone you are trying to achieve. If you’re going for airy and expansive, then yeah large dark pieces in a small space is probably not going to be the most successful. But if you are leaning into the small size of your space and going for a homey comfortable personal retreat, then big dark pieces may give you the exact feel you want!

Hi Lisa, thank you for another great & fun video. When you mentioned "yelling to grandma" I was reminded again that one of the key things home designers seem to forget is to really consider FOR WHOM are the spaces being designed? I cannot tell you how often these days I get invited to a home where I literally cannot get down and up from ANY of their low-slung, arm-less or very low-armed furnishings. Fine when you're a healthy 30-something. NOT GOOD when you're a disabled person in her 60's. I stand around feeling lost and wishing I had not come. Even grabbing a dining-room chair for me won't work if the chair has no arms. If there are elders in your family, or persons with disabilities, PLEASE consider their needs, too, not just what's currently in style or what goes with your design style & color palette. Human needs matter, too.
@LisaHoltDesign3 жыл бұрын
Jean!!! This is SUCH an important point - I always say the most important part of design is making your home work for YOU, and for the people you share your space with!! 🥰💙 What good is a trendy piece of furniture if no one can use it? 🤷🏼♀️ I totally agree with you here - putting your needs first is always a good call!!! 👏🏻💚 Thank you SO much for bringing this up, and thanks for joining me for another week of design fun!! 😘🧡

You are being realistic. To piggyback on your comment regarding low or armless chairs for the disabled and elderly. There are some sodas that are not only low. There is a huge difference in my humble opinion between making a room oppresive with too heavy or dark furniture and/or architectural details, and losing genuinely historic character by painting out Tudor beams or mantles, or furnishing spaces centuries out of date. I think one has be respectful of a building's overall aesthetic as much as its decor. Having said that however, hearing someone else's ideas and perspectives is always interesting and thought provoking, and most of your points are good reminders of things we sometimes forget, so thank you for your video.

Question: Should every room in your house be the same design style? Should you use the same tile in the bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room? Should the same carpet be used in the whole house? Should wood flooring be the same in every room that has it? What about cabinets such as bathroom cabinets, do they need to match the kitchen cabinets? Please don’t paint your exposed beams if your house is from 1500’s - 1700’s era. Dark furniture is totally fine in a dark spaces providing you’re going for that dark moody look & if you’re able to pull it off.
@LisaHoltDesign3 жыл бұрын
I totally get your point. The cottage beans and dark furniture were just examples of an out of scale design solution. I wouldn’t have painted the ceiling and beams white as depicted, however I would have white washed the beams, freshen up the ceiling paint and refurnished the sofas with smaller scale appropriate furnishings that would have, absolutely made that room way more spacious and open... while still keeping with the cottage theme. Like the cottage in the movie “The Holiday”. Intimate, cozy and feeling open and relaxing. I didn’t have the time or luxury to go into it in depth during my 10 min for KZbin however, if you end up joining the Dezignclub at www.lisaholt.com there will be tons of info on exactly how and what to do in that circumstance. Hope this helps! Thank for the comment 😘😘😘 (this answer was a repeat from a previous answer to a comment from along the same lines)

My husband is from the everything slammed up against the wall school of decorating. The fridge wouldn't fit through the door. We ended up removing the entire door frame to get the fridge onto the kitchen. The silver lining was...we got a crash course in the importance of measuring our spaces and entrances, plus how to build a new door frame and trim. @@LisaHoltDesign YES! I had my home custom built (moved in in 2017) - Came up one day to check progress and the builder had decided to work off an old blueprint I'd thought we'd killed, and had framed in closets in such a way that I'd either would have to float the bed in the middle of the bedroom, or place the bed against a window in the master. He had to rip it out and re-frame as to the updated design! (Corner room with windows on the two corners, door into the bath and a door into the main closet on one wall, a door into this room and a door into the small closet on the fourth - the bed needed to go between the door into the room and the door into the small closet! He acknowledged his mistake and didn't charge me extra.) Feng Shui, and just general comfort - wanting to look out the window across in the morning as I gently came awake. If this had been impossible to change, I would rather float the bed (in sub optimal space for floating) than have my headboard against a window.

I have an idea of some of my "mistakes" and this highlighted some that I can more readily fix, such as bedroom bed/window cohesion and picture height. I loved those up/down shades in the roman shade look. I feel that buying the right size rug for the living room might necessitate I draw up the plan first and try to finalize what furniture is going to stay or go and what the final configuration will be. It is so tempting to run out and buy the newest this or that without doing the groundwork. Your positive attitude and guidance is very helpful and this video helped because it is helping me focus in on what needs to change.

I have the exact opposite problem; my living room is so narrow (rectangular, with an archway on the one short end and front door and windows on the other), I don't see how I could possibly move the furniture away from the walls because there wouldn't be much, if any, walkway. *Maybe* if I bought all new, smaller furniture... =/ Idk, it's just so awkward!

Thanks for the great tips 👍 I'm presently going in circles all because I love Mahogany wood. Instead of white walls, I'm thinking of a light taupe or pastel sky blue slate. Hoping it won't look as stark with the wood. Also, with a general tip for hanging art. I tell people to pick a horizon line, like the top of doorways and hang your art around that line. It can be a little above or below but for general room sizes this works well. Also, give every item respectful breathing space, meaning, if one item is too close and is impeding another items personal space, it doesn't fit and gets edited out. Thanks for another great chock full video 🏆

Im moving and was lucky enough to find an apt that 20x14 living room. Is an 9x12 rug a good size for those dimensions? I should say the entrance to the LR is open with an almost wall to wall arched opening. About 10 foot high ceilings. Directly outside the LR is a space that is about 9.5 × 12 that I plan to use as a study/ office. My worry is that the space is so long and open a 9x12 rug will look too small. The office area will have a 5x8 rug. Love your videos and advice! Thank you.

Hi Lisa. I think the reason that people put their furniture against the wall is because moving furniture into the middle of the room makes people feel vulnerable, like someone is going to come up from behind them. That’s why in restaurants people prefer the seats against the wall. With regard to the bed under the window, I have a Victorian metal headboard against my pretty window so it doesn’t block the view. Lovely advice about curtains by the way. I’ll experiment with that. Thanks!

If you’re flopping that hard on your sofa you need to rethink things( rugs, soft feet on the sofa etc) and not be a 5 year old...Why would an adult body slam a sofa shoving it so hard it would scratch a floor?? You sit down, lay down etc...move some pillows maybe to be more comfy first but yeah...tell the “others” to grow up and respect the things that you worked hard to provide, decorate and care for. Flopping is for trampolines.

In a "cottage" situation, depending on the age of the cottage, painting the ceiling beams white is NOT an option. If you're talking "beachy/Hamptons/fakey" cottage, yes. If you're talking "1500's workers cottage in Britain you just paid five-hundred thousand pounds for" nope. You're BUYING the aesthetic and history, regardless of how "cramped" it makes the space appear. And PS: if you own a period property with beautiful wood paneling & trim and you paint that all white? There are legions of people that will come looking for you with pitchforks and torches. And tar. And feathers.
@lk67893 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct, I never understand why these designer want to rip everything out or paint it white. It seems than in the US anything over 25 years is passed it's sell by date. My house is at least 200 years old with most external wall a meter wide, built to last, would never dream of living in a modern house. Although it's old it still has all the modern cons where needed, bathrooms, kitchens, usb sockets, led (bulbs, some great glass ones now the look like candles) in chandeliers etc. Doesn't need air conditioning even at 44c(111f), those old builders knew what they were doing and didn't rely on technology to solve problems. Must admit I did rid out the artexed ceilings to reveal all the wood beams, but in my eyes they were as bad as painting everything white.

I was thinking exactly the same. My home is late medieval and it’s costing me a fortune to correct all the ‘fads’ other people before me have done. If you want a boring new house then buy one but owning a heritage property requires a sympathetic owner willing to love it and maintain it

@@ahoyhere8113 Arrogance knows no bounds. "Oh, I have a degree and tons of famous clients!!!!" and honestly, trends are crap. In the 40’s my grandmother hung pictures from a picture rail that was like a chair rail about 12/18 inches from the ceiling. The pictures were hung by an exposed string or wire and you locked your hands behind your back and stared straight up at the ceiling to view the pictures. Incidentally, my granddads favorite picture was the old dogs sitting around a poker table puffing on cigarettes with bleary eyes. I have not copied his artistic eye.

You and I are on the same page for most of that. (I hate seeing beds in front of the window, which is all too common around here.) The cottage "bad" example looked quite cozy and welcoming to me! LOL Sadly, I can't approve of the advice to paint the dark wood--call me old-fashioned, but I generally consider painting wood a frightful sin. Also, I must admit that I am quite prejudiced against "light" spaces. My husband and I currently live in a 300 sq apartment--and I hate the walls, which are cream and I am now allowed to paint. Sometimes you're just as well off to go dark, just limiting how much furniture you have, and embrace the cozy. Beds shouldn't be against windows at all--but the solution about having a see through head board (with the cast iron frame) is the best solution, I agree. Ideally furniture would be measured and be fitted for the space--but that isn't always practical when you move. Few of us can afford to replace all the furnishing for a house. I 100% agree that slamming the furniture against all the walls is disease. lol Once my husband and I are able to move into our farmhouse we'll definitely be able to float pieces. I can't wait! Too small rugs are off-putting. I think people fall into that mistake because rugs are expensive and the smaller piece was more affordable and people decided it would "do". My husband and I are both on the taller side--so we've really got to watch ourselves when we hang anything on the wall because we'll automatically hang it at our eye level which is a bit higher than what is suitable.

Brigantia!! That is SO ok - one of the things I LOVE about design is that there are so many different opinions in our little community!!! 👏🏻💜 If you're into that cottage look, go for it!!! 🤩 So glad you're on board on a couple of other "fixes," and thank you SO much for watching!! 🥰💚

@@LisaHoltDesign I enjoy your videos--whether I agree or disagree! lol It's good mental exercise to compare and contrast opinions, especially with something as subjective as interior design. There's room for a lot of nuance and different situations.
