I have never watched any of your videos before today and want to say what a fan of yours I have become. Your video on drapery was the most informative, educational and inspiring I have seen. A per peeve of mine is drapery that has pooled on the floor. Does anyone realize how dangerous it can be if someone's shoe get's caught in the fabric? Having the panel a fraction of an inch above the floor is beautiful and much more practical. I agree with your comments and have felt this way for many years. I don't see why more professionals don't stress this fact.

We've purchased our retirement home that has 2 Large Curved bay windows that face the street. Figuring the height from floor to top of window casing is 8-9'. Was thinking out of the box (before I saw this video of course) that I could take 1" PVC tubing that could curve into that space & use that as the curtain rod. But now I'm intrigued by the Ripple Fold track & wonder if they can be installed in a curve? Have to do my research, but you've got my creative juices flowing. Wish I could insert some pictures of these gorgeous bay windows.

That’s an interesting thought Dolores. I’ve had both. We had Venetian blinds when I grew up. They collect way more dust. Our curtain fabric doesn’t collect dust. It’s dense and has a sheen. I think you’ll find that it depends on the fabric.

Even the best shutters made will have light gaps. Interior mount (within the window well) not as many as exterior mount (on the molding or creating a molding in the construction of the shutter). They are most complicated to install and a professional measure and installation by the same person is going to be the best fit.

How many inches wide should the decorative drapery should be on each side of the window? Now I have a better understanding about window treatments. Thank you for the simple explanation.
@kellbellroses877
@kellbellroses877 3 жыл бұрын
Isabel Aguilar depends on the height of your ceiling, your width of your wall and size of your window...( not to mention what you are trying to accomplish with your draperies. There is not just one rule.. honestly. For example.. if your window was not in the center of your wall. You only have 5 inches before window begins... you may want to “cheat” the balance of that wall by making the panel hang over past that 5 inches to add more cemetery to the space... or. Have that drape not be on that side at all and pull it over to the opposite side... The panels in the store come in 18 to 24 widths for most pre made panels... but sometimes you need to soften the blank wallspace in a very large room so you might want to have maybe 48 inches split between on the wall and in the window... and what is the goal of the drapes in the room you are designing? Is it softening? Lengthening? Or privacy? See.. so many variables. 18 inch for many situations will probably be fine if goal is to be just covering window frame with rest outside of the window box ( for a home built 40’s thru 60’s here in Southern California withb8 foot ceilings and 2,000 sq ft or less) but let’s say you bought a 1980’s townhouse with high ceilings, narrow pladidum windows... 18 inches may feel too much over those big thick louver blinds... ( so then we had that sash look... remember?) so really. It depends on your room and what you are hoping to achieve to figure out what size your room and window might need. ( if you describe your room I’m sure we will give you ideas 💡❣️🌹💁‍♀️🌹👍
@Kaththee
@Kaththee 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with Kell Bell Roses. I would add unless you are trying to "widen" the window (they seem too narrow for the space) then I would put the curtain rod directly over the edge of the window frame molding so the finial (if you have a finial) extends out from the window edge slightly. I have extended them 5 feet from the edge of a window. Lets say you have only one window in a bedroom and it is awkwardly tucked into a corner (actual situation in my last house) then the curtains can extend across the wall giving you the appearance of wider windows so you can balance the room.

Question & Rant! (a little off topic): I hate electrical outlets. I ALWAYS want to paint them the wall color and sheen, hoping they will not be noticed. Honestly when I do it, it does look less distracting-I remove them to paint them and try not to make it look like they’re painted to the wall. But they are still objects to be hidden, in my opinion-and, I hate that they dictate where I put furniture as well. Thanks for reading! I loved how you talked about TVs ! Do you have some words of wisdom for electrical outlets?

I live in very cold Melbourne Australia in a traditional house and need my drapes to function as thermal barriers, even thought it not my style I need full length to the floor, thermal lined with a pelmet to keep the draft out.

And then again in summer to keep the heat out! I associate really hot days with dark rooms :) I think the pelmets are key to stopping the air flow. We have laid planks of vinyl flooring stuff over our curtain rods to stop the drafts without adding visual clutter

Enjoy your personality and enthusiasm. I live in northern New England where it's cold 6 months of the year. Many of our homes run baseboard heating under the windows. It is recommended that drapes hang at least 4 inches above the baseboards otherwise heat escapes out the window behind closed drapes (we close our drapes at night to save on heat/stay warm) Long story short, one cannot reasonably have drapes that reach or pillow on the floor as it covers our heating source causing a loss of heat. Would you recommend a drape length of 4 inch above baseboard or just below the bottom sill. (Double and triple pane windows are a given).

Another comprehensive look at one aspect of design, and again the pictures illustrate exactly what you’re talking about. Great video! I am a window treatment junkie. All my windows have plantation shutters that guard against the hot sun of our climate, and fixed panels. I think of drapery as the eyebrows of a window....without them there had better be a fantastic view to compensate 😎. Thanks again for a great Friday video Lisa!

I was taught to avoid using "drapes" or "drapery," and to instead use "curtains." I often default to "panels" because I am afraid "curtains" confuses people who beleive whatever they read on the internet. Language does change but my English professors would be turning in their respective graves if I used "drapes" or even "drapery."

Oh Boy! I've been waiting for this one! I'm considering making drapery panels (need 4.5 yds per panel ... yikes!) and want a nice linen fabric, not too heavy, and unlined ...something off-warmish cream, not start white, and maybe, maybe touched with a little hemp-like light neutral for a quiet and neutral look.

Thanks, Lisa. I'm saving this for when my son & daughter-in-law purchase their first home. Whilst renting, they haven't bothered to reflect on the impact all those details make to the finish of a room. Hubby & I have been living in our newly built home for almost 2 years and still haven't put up permanent drapery in any of the rooms! We have recently installed neutral honeycomb blinds but I am yet to convince him that hanging curtains close to the ceiling is the way to go :(

I loves this. Could you do one with more info and detail on things like cornices, roman shades, valances, swags, etc? From types of treatments to info like should you do certain things with crown molding, especially larger crown molding, hanging blinds or shades on swing-in casement windows. I have a sun room in a 100 year old house with 12 casement 8-light windows and high very ornate crown molding about 4 inches above the window casing. I am thinking about bespoke roman shades in an opaque fabric possibly with some sort of trim detail. The house used to have cheap plastic blinds and they are just dust collectors to my mind. I grow a lot of plants in this room and use it as my TV room and office so I need a little sun filtering at times to cut the glare, but I don't want to really hide the view of the yard.

This is so timely. I’m having coffee after a frustrating search for curtains which need updating! We have heavy thermal backed drapes in the living room. Two double sliding doors, with a curtain rod above the wood frame. Perfect for heat and cold insulation. I also like the look of curtains. Homey. We have a modern cottage style home. I love some of the options from Luxaflex but they’re pricey. I really dislike vertical blinds. They remind me of an office. Not sure if we should get sheer. I like the look but probably not because of the cold and heat that the doors let in and we have privacy. It looks out onto our courtyard. I’d better watch now!

This video came at a perfect time as I'm now onto selecting draperies after I battled my painting dilemma. After painting some walls matte black in my rental, it looked great with some of my Restoration Hardware furniture that was also in a matte black finish. But something didnt feel quite right. After watching your video I relaized some of the mistakes I was making. Too many metals. I had chrome, wrought iron pieces and gold going on. I couldn't figure out how my former apartment with the same pieces now felt so out of place. Then your advice shed some light. Aside from too many metals, I realized the architectural feel was now a traditional backdrop in my 1920' s frech electic rental and not a new modern loft with concrete floors. I also had no framed pieces on the wall then and the walls and ceiling were matte white. The only gold were two gilded thai buddahs . I set forth and removed all the framed pieces and knew the black walls, despite how cool they looked, it needed to be floor and ceiling, and as much as I liked the looked, I prefered the minimalistic white walls. I customed matched the orginal paint but cooled it down to pair better with all the black; painting from floor and the ceiling. It worked!! I now have the modern minimal vibe from the apartment in my rental. I opted for 96" brushed cotton twill panels from RH, hoping this will provide some relief from all the sun but still feel modern and clean. So thank you 😊 for these amazing videos. I watched your video on rugs but how to choose the right shade of grey, is that something of a personal choice or are there tips in selecting the right one. I see a lot of rooms with all white walls and furniture like mine, but most are using light to medium solid grey rugs. I found a knotted wool rug thats more charcoal but worried it may weigh the room down with me ending up loosing that airy feel.
