Thank you very much for this video. Helps a lot. Especially with the motivation :) I have one question though. When going up to the high register I have the bad habit to smile and therefore tighten my lips. Any advice on how to correct this? Should I use more of the tongue to add some air pressure or play more with my abs? Thanks.
@LisaLizTrombone
@LisaLizTrombone 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lamain! Thank you for your comment, I am sorry I am seeing this a month later! I am glad you found my video helpful, and motivation is very important these days. Us musicians have to find creative ways to stay motivated during this time. When I go into the high register, I like to think of the vowel shape inside my mouth, not so much my lips or what's happening outside of my mouth. I like to think of going from saying "O" to "E". The tongue raises in the back of the mouth, and this can help you get into the higher register. Give it a try! Another thing you can think of is the angle of your air stream. I like to think of angling the air down as I go higher. Kind of hard to explain through a comment. I'll be posting some videos about this soon! Stay tuned and please let me know if you have any questions. Also let me know if you want to take a lesson, I can totally help you with this! lisaliztrombone.com/online-video-lessons

@LisaLizTrombone
@LisaLizTrombone 3 жыл бұрын
@@hectormalotru hmm... I thought I answered your question above. Maybe it was only part of it? I do not think of smiling and tightening my lips, more what’s happening on the inside of my mouth. Tongue placement is involved in the O to E concept. You should not use more pressure though, that could hurt you. Pushing the mouthpiece on the face isn’t a good idea.
@LisaLizTrombone
@LisaLizTrombone 3 жыл бұрын
@@hectormalotru I have never thought about playing from my abs either. When I take big breaths, I like to think of filling up with air down to my stomach, but that’s about it.

If you look closely you can see straining and tension in your neck….also if you notice there is not an enlargement phenomenon occurring in the upper body ….this is an indication that there is not sufficient quantities of air in your lungs….one should see an enlargement and reduction phenomenon occurring ….the straining apparent in your neck is an indicator that there is a negative pressure curve that is occurring this negative pressure occurs when you are on the last one third of your vital capacity…. in order to get out the last third one has to push and squeeze to move the air. Unfortunately this hampers the next breath by carrying the tension over diminishing the ability to replace the breath effectively. As a general rule it is important to stay off the last 1/3 of your vital capacity for theses reasons. When the lungs are full the air will move freely due to the elasticity of the lungs. A voldyne incentive spirometer is a great visual aid to ensure one is taking in sufficient quantities of air. Air becomes more important in the extreme ranges of the instrument …without sufficient quantities of air one will have difficulty playing in the low and high registers… It is a good idea to work on developing healthy breathing habits away from the trombone…when holding the trombone old habits are formed that are impossible to break…by working on new breathing habits away from the instrument it is possible to develop quickly and transfer back to the instrument. I hope this helps…..all the best.

Sounds great. Personal thoughts: Warm up should take 5 to 10 mins. Long tones are not a good start in my opinion; they should be part of maintenance and development. 1 Breathing to blow over metronome (2 mins), 2 Air to Buzz 30 secs, 3 Buzz scales and arpeggios. 2mins 30. Then get the air flowing with half-step glisses Bb to A, F to E, Bb A and up 1 min 4) followed by the intervals you played F to E, F to Eb etc. Then use slow false tones, which are great for developing sound and strengthening the embouchure (possibly better than long tones, which are more about control). Finally, end with improvised noodling around techniques you need to keep maintained (such as tonguing - flexibility). Improvising has been shown to shut down the part of the brain that causes inhibitions in the pre-frontal cortex (the handcuff of creativity). It means we can then enter the next part of our day in a more creative zone :-)....just my opinion. Everyone is different. I think it's important to differentiate what is the warm up and what is practise. Warm ups are often the same and shouldn't really be longer than 10 mins. It's a comforting place to get us started from home.
