Stories like this really showed me i hit the lottery on parents. My parents are always there for my surgeries and always be there as well. My last was a 9 and a half hr surgery and they were both there the only time my dad left my side was when i was undressed and being marked for surgery and when i was going to have it done(my mom stayed for the marking) they went and had lunch and went to the lake but never were too far away just incase something happened. I couldn't ever see myself just texting them and letting them know. Theyre both my emotional support humans when it comes to something so serious lol. Im 25 now and i dont care if they're 70-80 i know theyd be by my side in the future. Altho i will say im glad you felt the need and took charge into making boundaries. Some parents are terrible at learning what those are and it's like you need to become the parent to teach them.

idk how to describe this outside of “i needed to read this comment” 😭 i try very hard to not hold my parents to any level of expectation bc they fail me consistently (but i won’t say every time) so i NEED to set boundaries, but i’m not in a place in my life yet where it’s safe for me to do so. it’s just that, BECAUSE of that, i might not EVER reach that point because as a disabled person with a disabled partner we need so much help. outside of that, the other reason i needed to read this is bc if i WERE to ever have surgery, this is probably how my parents would act, particularly my mom whose an RN. it’s just such a huge mishmash, yk? they’ve caused me SO much more HARM then GOOD, but the amount of GOOD they caused is too much for me to put a full stop in our relationship. i know they care they just, care wrong. and i keep telling them how to care right but they just refuse it and keep going their own path, even if they think they’re doing the opposite.

@eggiboiroi I cant believe how much I needed to read your response comment to this other comment. I am very much in the same boat as you. I am disabled and so is my partner. We needed to rely on them to get our lives cleaned up and my parents have meant well, but they have caused so much harm at the same time. My partner and i managed to get an apartment in the city (a terrible landlord owned it and it leaked etc.) But it was safe from my mom. That was five years ago and im still trying to enforce boundaries. Basic ones like respecting my identity enough to not be in total denial of me. She wont take responsibility for the awful things she used to say to me when i was little and the rage she directed at me. Just tonight i had my first confrontation with her since i moved out. She kept telling me how i felt. Telling me i was angry and trying to "hurt me and congratulations you did it!" I wasnt angry at all. I told her i was hurt. She insisted i was angry. This was thro7gh text. She had no reasons to th8nk i was angry except she was perceiving that i was "grtting onto her about your dad" ...just weird stuff. It felt teribke but i jever lost composure. I dont k ow where we go from here cause she stands between me and the rest of my family. I sincerely hope that you and your partner csn find a way to get safe and be able to live your lives ro the fullest extent that you can. I tried enforcing a boundary and thats whaf set my mom off today. I grew up believing she hated me. I felt so confused cause shed be nice occasionally and it had my head all messed up. She was triggered today and i didnt deserve the things she said. She does my head in. I swear i feel insane when she does this type of thing. Now i keep feeling the urge tomake her feel better. To sacrifice myself for her . Thats what she wants. It was total synchronization that i saw your comment. I had listened to the original version of this song by the who esrlier today. Then after all that awful mean stuff she said i put this version on cause its been a long time since i heard it. I happened to look at comments and found my way to yours. I wish i could say something helpful. I understand what you're talking about. My parents have been that way too. I sincerely hope that you can create the boundaries you need and that yall find a way to have a home for yourselves. Let me know if you need someone to talk to and ill give you my info. Take care

This past September my only child moved from British Columbia to go to Toronto for graduate school. I went with her to Toronto to help her move into an apartment on campus. A week later she told me what I think was the sweetest thing. She texted me and said: "Mum, after I took you to the aiport and I was in an Uber thats when it hit me that for the first time in my lifeI need to figure things out for myself since you are not there anymore. But its still comforting to know you are one flight away. Thank you for being there for me emotionally, mentally, and physically and all aspects of my life. With you by my side I know I can conquer the world. I love you mum"❤ I thank God everyday for giving me one special girl. I will hope that if my daughter was to have surgery she would tell me in advance. Wishing love, peace, and understanding to you and your family❤❤❤

i had and knew both of my biological parents, my best parent ended up being my step dad, who had to grow and change along the way. i can tell you, the family i made may not be able to take care of me the EXACT same way as a really good parent could, but, there is something special about knowing they are there for you, they want to hang out with you, they want to be better for you etc. in a sense, the family you made could potentially be BETTER than having parents. you can still experience someone being there for you, taking care of you, thinking of you, etc. you can grow and guide a family environment that brings you love and security. my new family, that i made myself, gives me so much more peace than the one i grew up with, and i could only finally appreciate it, when i let go of what my relationship with my parents "could have been". sure, it could have been nice, but, they didn't want to bond, my kids do though. my kids want to learn with me, they want to get to know me, and even though my mother said she wanted to be better friends with me, my sons are actually putting in the effort and I'm not about to repeat my mother's mistake and teach them to give up on trying, you know? i want them to feel rewarded for putting in the effort and showing them in return what a healthy version of friendship can look and feel like. ...your past can haunt your present, it can haunt your future, you can't get rid of it, but you can decide how it affects you, how you adapt to it and its effect on your present.
@sexymskat
@sexymskat 8 ай бұрын
@RenTheCrow that's different, they grew up in the system, you didn't, you grew up with atleast a step father who cared, they grew up not having much of anyone to care, not feeling loved at all, going through traumas alone. Their parents aren't even asking for a relationship probably so your situation and feelings are not theirs, still very different. It's easier said than done. The longing of having unconditional love from a parent isn't the sane as a spouse, a spouse can leave, a good parent will love and guide you always, of course you love your kids but you have to be strong and the leader for them, sometimes you want to be vulnerable and be held or know that you can be cared for forever no matter what and be vulnerable with ease. Being estranged and not having the greatest relationship and still even having a parent who says they want a better relationship with you is different from growing up in the system with no parent and not feeling like someone gives af esp. when your suffering and having a rough time. They should never have had to deal with that, it curries on for long and requires therapy and support. Hopefully they get the love and healing they need but your situation is not theirs.

@@Rach1313Maybe they get overbearing and try to baby her too much. So rather than just being supportive they’re like force feeding her things she doesn’t want and not allowing her to do things for sake of “recovery”. It’s not always malicious, but if they often “forget” that you’re not a child anymore and they can’t control you then boundaries are necessary. The texting might have been her way to show “it’s not a big deal so don’t make it a big deal” 😂 I have similar parents and I’m very independent. I don’t allow my parents to tell me what to do. Opinions and advise are welcome - but I don’t accept hard feelings if I didn’t listen. My brother unfortunately is very non confrontational and they WILL have a say on his life. So when the parents are retired and can’t live on their own, guess what else happens? 😈 I’m kidding 😂 partially. But seriously I grew up in a multigenerational household and the leader of the house is always respected as long as they’re functioning as such. This also brings a lot of perspective into parenting when it comes to respecting their children. They have to care about you if you’re going to one day depend on them as caregivers. Otherwise they just ship you off somewhere else.

I don't understand why people are shaming her? Come out of your bubble please and realise that not every parent in the world is loving. Especially Asian parents are too much into tough love and all that bs which is not good parenting. You're privileged if you have good parents but not everyone is.

You are very brave. When I tore an acl in highschool, I was so scared about the surgery that I almost chose to not go through with it. My mom kinda forced her boss (used up all annual leaves) to give her a week off so that she could stay in the hospital with me and take care of me after I got discharged. I never imagined I'd be a clingy child but I was clasping my mom's hands until I can't anymore. Well, the surgery was a flunk, ACL still torn, doctor accidentally hit a nerve so I'm numb on one side of the knee, knee still aches every now and then and I can't kneel or put any pressure on the knee. Rehab for 6 months because I had to relearn how to walk. Fun... For a 14yo, it felt like my world was crumbling and I had no future😅 20 now, still hated myself for getting the injury, can't run or participate in certain activities.

Reminds me of one of my earliest memories. When I was about 3-5 years old, I had a UTI, and afterwards my mom made sure I was drinking enough water and cranberry juice. I kid you not, she made me carry this huge jug of cranberry juice around, which must’ve been hilarious considering that the jug was about as big as my torso. I refused to drink cranberry juice for YEARS after that, lol

My mom tends to ask about my health after dr visits but then tunes out about 3 words in so I get a lot of weird and unhelpful advice too lol Side note. Have you ever tried making rough puff pastry from scratch? I got the recipe from the great British backoff show (paul holiday recipe im sure) and its basically just butter/flour/salt/water. Super simple and the flavor will blow those cans if crescent dough out of the water lol Only bummer is its best if you make it and refrigerate the dough overnight.

This looks yummy.. I love the transformation of fresh cranberries into the jammy, saucy substance... There's never a need for the canned stuff on Thanksgiving, though I certainly wouldn't turn it away if that was all that was available. Yes, a simple miscommunication can spur a web of incorrect perception. Moreover, misunderstanding goes even deeper, imo. Merry Christmas to You and your family, friends, et al, Lisa 🎄🌟🎅

Interesting fact… Cranberries used to be called Crane berries by the pilgrims and nobody really knows how or why it got changed to “Cranberries” over time. Other than being used for cranberries, the word “Cran” does not appear anywhere else in the English language (used in this context). Similar to Mul in Mulberries, it’s an example of what you would call an “unique morpheme” in language.
