Wood Turning Mixed Media: Butternut Bowl with Leather, Brass and Porcupine Quills
In this video I turn a butternut blank into a beautiful bowl and embellish it with mixed media materials, including leather, brass and porcupine quills.
Yes, porcupine quills - beware, they must be de-barbed before using!
And watch til the end to see our resident porkie with her baby ❤️

Very nice. Butternut is a member of the same family as Black Walnut (juglans cinerea and juglans nigra, respectively) and have a similar grain pattern. Lovely piece. So glad you didn't turn in the lip on THAT bowl.

Thanks Alex! This tree came from a friend of mine - it was having some decay issues and was leaning toward the house, but it was also impeding the growth of her tomatoes, being in the walnut family. So I’m making pretty things out of it 😁

Great bowl. I use Nova and Record chucks, just remember that one numbers clockwise and one counter-clockwise so if you use Nova jaws on the Record chuck you need to swap jaws 2 and 4 over if you see what I mean. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks Dave! You can buy them online but I’m always a bit nervous about that - so many people kill things to sell their parts so I try to know where my wood and other materials comes from. And I don’t think your hedge pigs have quite the same sort of quills 😂
@user-ml3hl6vr4t

Ask a veterinarian. I get a ready supply because here there is always going to be a dog that does… I’ll give the tech a few bucks to gather some for me. (I do bead and quill work, quills are great spacers to make beaded earrings very light). If one visits, toss an old tennis ball onto them. It won’t hurt the animal and they will most likely shed some onto/into the ball. In the UK look for a decent bead shop. They will probably have them in small baggies for ridiculous prices. Online I think Fire Mountain Gems has them. Double check-some sell African Porcupine Quills. These are large, like 1/4”-1cm thick and 3”-7 cm long. Probably sold by each…

Would blue painter's tape have helped in keeping the wood glue off the rest of the bowl while you put the leather on?
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill! Probably. I didn’t get much on the bowl, and I wiped it off with a damp rag. After I was done I used the paper towel I applied the Tung Wax with and buffed that area a little bit - no traces left 👍

Do you use a 40/40 grind for roughing out and a swept back grind for finishing?
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Stuart! Yes and no 😂. I kinda switched back and forth during the roughing but I did use the 55 or 60° swept back grinds on the bottom. I’m liking certain grinds for very things, tho it seems like sometimes one gouge works better on a particular price than others 🤷‍♀️🤣
@STMwoodturning
@STMwoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
@@LisaRamlow thanks for the sorta explanation… I know Stuart Batty & Ashley Harwood ex spouse the superiority of the 40/40 but many other turners I follow use other grinds. Just trying to get some unbiased feedback on where what works better. I’m trying to learn so thanks for sharing your experiences 😊

i wish i could find a bunch of those big quills(the ones about 6-7 inches long)- we use them to bream fish with- as a cork- they are quiet on the water and my granddaddy always said when the fish grabs the cricket he can't feel that quill when it goes underwater- he wouldnt fish with anything but a quill- hard to find today-
