My focus is on quick recovery 1st. Being spotted fast. Helping people locate you. Making it easy for people to find you. Spot lights, bullhorn w sirens. Bright orange clothing, signs and reflectors, flags. Cell phones, walkie talkie radios. Being flashy and noisy. Making it easy for others to pull you out. The longer you are trapped the more dangerous it is. 2nd would be survival mode. Hunkering down. Staying with vehicle. Keeping warm. 3rd worry about playing cards and crapping in your vehicle last.

One thing with the snow comment, if you just melt the snow, make certain you have some way of purification, either tablets or boiling. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to include some instant coffee packets or cocoa packets. This will give you some nutrients and make the hot water more palatable.

After spending 3+ days in my car on I-75 in 2013, I can tell you the cheap emergency foil blankets that are the size of a deck of cards were a HUGE help in making my "living" area smaller & helping to capture as much heat as possible. I also had 2 wool blankets, a can of 7 hr sterno and most of your items. After that experience I now also carry a foam pad to put between me and the seat to help keep warmer

Chewy bars are sooo important. A hard granola bar will be impossible to eat on a super cold day if you get stuck. Outside my winter kit, stuff I have in my car year around are tissue, napkins (multi use paper source), hand sanitizer, hand wipes and general toiletries. I always bring water with me and keep water in my car when I leave, no matter what. I find if you do it and ask folks traveling with you to bring water every time, it becomes routine and no one complains. Always bring water!

If there's a female in your car and she's on her cycle make sure you have alcohol and bags bags to rap the pads in after use and alcohol to drown out the smell bears and other animals can smell blood. So that's a good thing to keep in a car emergency kit 😊 merry Christmas and stay safe 🙏

I always like to store toilet paper or a compressed wipe of different kinds for bathroom purposes but also to help you get a fire started if you needed to. Also different water filtration type systems if you are grabbing some random snow or water. Also I feel like wearing and keeping proper clothing in your vehicle at all times is important. ( many people get in a pickle because they are wearing heels and dress clothing). Having an extra pair of warm clothes and shoes is a must if you are not already wearing them. Spot on with everything else.

I would ditch the cup for a single wall stainless steel bottle. That way if you can get it hot, it can double as a hot water bottle to keep you warm. If you use a wide-mouth bottle you can store stuff inside.

Great ideas. I live in Alberta Canada and travel over 1.5 hrs one way to work. I keep my car ready to stay overnight in every time I’m traveling to work. I have a bed set up and especially in the winter I have down sleeping bags and a heat source for emergencies (buddy heater- and yes I know to crack the window etc). For your kit, since it’s small, you could easily fit some peanut butter to go for some added food source and maybe even a little pocket stove or Esbit stove. Then you could even have some cup a soup for cold stranded days. 🤙

As someone who has spent a lot of time in cold places there's a couple things I would change/add to this kit. Zippo makes a hand warmer that's really awesome and is powered by lighter fluid (it doesn't have an open flame). I would also suggest switching those high carb bars for something that's more fat based because fat will keep you much warmer for longer than carbs. And the last thing is a ferro-rod for starting a real fire outside your car if you're in a place with firewood available. If you start it close to your car, some of the heat will radiate through the windows and actually heat the inside of the car. Ferro-rods take a small amount of practice to be able to use effectively but once you know how, it can be a literal life saver.

Had no idea those zippo hand warmers were powered by lighter fluid. I think having hand warmers is also good since there’s no chance of mechanical malfunction.

I carry a bullhorn in my van. Also has a siren on it. Also have Midland Walkie Talkie Radios to communicate with the house if in range. Just added Rino 30ft. 3 inch recovery straps, extra 3/4 shackles, and 2" hitch shackle, and an emergency shovel. Very nice high quality products. 4 different flashlights, battery operated and rechargeable spread out in the van. Also added a spot light from Amazon that has a 2 mile beam for $30. Has 3 different color plates if needed that has a flashing switch.

I think that kit contains some great items. I would definately add a proper power bank/ phone charger with a second spare cable as a phone is just so critical. The glow sticks are a great idea, but I would go with the larger ones with a view to using them outside the vehicle for signalling/marking....Add a few long zip ties to secure the glow sticks to something handy. With regards signalling, also consider a good, rechargable laser pointer...Don't point it directly at any rescuers, but at night it can be flashed around the air periodically and is visible over a huge distance and really stands out..

I'd stick a couple of Military MREs (Meals Ready To Eat) in the kit with a water-activated meal pouch heater. if you are stuck for any length of time before you and your passengers are recovered them warm food is important. So is hot drinks. Have flask of hot water every time you go on a trip.

I just found your video and I think it was great. Ive kept a roadside kit in my car since about 2011 ish. I lived in Charlotte, nc and there was a huge ice storm (the year may be wrong) from Charlotte to Atlanta. People were stuck by the hundreda on the road and emergency vehicles couldn't get to all of them for ove a day or 2 in some cases. I made a great kit after that and have kinda let it dwindle since then. I am really interested in the blow up light. I will order it in a paycheck or 2. Thanks for the tips and I think its time I update my kit for this next winter!

This is a really good kit. It gave me some ideas- like the candle lantern and pop up lantern to charge things. I would add a nice wool blanket- they stay warm even when wet- and some extra things like an extra pair of sock, a warm beanie and maybe scarf- since you loose a lot of heat from the head (and I see the person below me also thought of these thinks. Kudos to Bunnie Lynn! - I second that- tissues, a go John portable toilet bag or P-Style for women with garbage bags for doing your business. But really good start. Thanks for making the video.

Good list/suggestion of items Hiker J. These would good to have just in case. I know you mention the tape but something clips, , safety pins, binder clips, extra cordage like paracord could be used to join the shelter stuff together. For example clip the blanket or emergency blanket together or to one's coat/jacket. Since shelter in this case is going to be high priority , a sleep bag could be added to buy more time or conserve the heater/heat sources more. Just to add something like a the glow stick, bright balloons(yellows/oranges), safety vest and such on an antenna or with a stick/shovel in the snow by the road to aid in flagging/ "look over here" with both contrasting color and movement of the items. All the best from CR.

surprised no one mentioned a cheap "tow strap" you can get a 30' tow strap with hooks on both ends for $30. no they aren't for pulling a 1 ton pickup out of a deep mud hole. yes they will pull a car or mid sized suv out of a snow drift. so many times someone will come by that is willing to you if you stuck in the snow, but they don't have the tools. next best thing is a shovel. takes a lot longer but a collapsing shovel is worth it wait in gold!!

Good video. You and I have similar ideas about survival. Add tissues, tire chains, micro spikes, insulated boots, and insulated coveralls. Sometimes you have to get out to dig out or walk out. Add instant oatmeal, instant cocoa, cup noodles, and a Sterno can or 4 tealight candles. 4 candles together will bring that Walmart cup to a boil with 8 oz of water in it. Don't forget some plastic spoons from Wendys. When you can, in the fall, teach all of your family drivers how to install chains the easy way(just drive onto them). The small cheap fleece throws from Walmart can make you a lot more comfortable. Good Luck, Rick

Going beyond emergency blankets, there are emergency sleeping bags made of the same metalized polymer that would do a better job of containing body heat, though I don’t know how well they would stand up to repeated use. A camping bivy would be a better option for repeated use.

I live in a cold climate and was left for 9hrs a few winters ago waiting for a tow. Luckily, I had prepared for such case. I duct taped a bunch of mylar blankets up making my car a mini warm tent of sorts. Turned the car on for 10 minutes every hour to increase the warmth. The only thing I wish I had was a portable camping stove to boil water. Soaking those mountain house meals in non-boiling water works. It just makes them that much more disgusting.

When I build a kit for my car, I don’t just build it around emergencies… I build it around things that I will use from it all the time and replenish it. This way the products in it are not expiring and then when you need them you find out they’re no good. So I recommend to people to put who they like and also put in activities and as you had light sources with batteries. I would want to see something to mark off the vehicle if you might be able to get out of it like a set of the little blinking strobes. Just because you’re not trapped in the vehicle doesn’t mean you’re not better off to stay with it. You might not be alone or you might have somebody with you that’s injured and you can’t just leave them there. One thing I always recommend to people is to get a space bag and put an entire set of dry clothes in it, shrink it down and put it under the backseat. Then if for some reason you get drenched in the rain or whatever you have those dry clothes. In addition to that in your little box I would’ve definitely put at least one pair of extra socks and at least one pair of gloves just because those are key items and I wouldn’t want to have to go into my little space bag for that. I agree with you about a larger blanket. When I lived up north I kept two in every vehicle one easily accessible and a second one shrunk down in a space bag. I also recommend that people keep an 8 x 10 tarp a good heavy one so that if they have to get out on the road side and work on their vehicle or for whatever else that they can put something on the ground and not have to get soaking wet in the cold snow. It also has many other uses and packs away small.
