PCSX2 only started to moving it's ass and updating something after AetherSX2 became a thing and fixed some old issues like the infamous black sky on Burnout games which is a very known bug and took almost 10y to get fixed and was only fixed by the Aether dev! I'm glad they are finally moving away from that plugin system. PS2 emulation really reminds me of N64 emulation where everything sucks and every game needs some special tweaking and hacking and there's a bunch of stuff that just don't work and nothing changes for decades and no one else jumps in trying to revamp the thing or releasing a better emulator that doesn't rely on those hacks that much just because it's a better emulator! RPCS3, Xenia, the Switch emulators, 3DS and Vita emulators, all came up later than these other and are becoming or already are way better than those two! And the PS3 is something way more complicated than the N64 or PS2, I don't know why these are still so poor.

Cemu? It's another one that hasn't shown anything relevant for a long time. Only small updates that don't change anything. Things like a dark theme, a new, more modern interface, have been awaited for ages. And mainly, the correction of the lens flare effect bug in the games Zelda Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. Year after year and this bug is never fixed.

epsxe: an emulator that, when you managed to configure it perfectly, was great. The problem is that for each game you had to test an astronomical combination of plugins (not counting third-party plugins) until you found the ideal configuration, and this could take (no joke) days! But it was imposing in its time, for sure. Nowadays the best standalone emulators are those that follow the pcsx2/dolphin standard, like duckstation, and in other cases use cores in retroarch. but it's really cool to remember these emulators from the past, and how difficult emulation was in the past (I also played on zsnes at the end of 90. my first emulator was Genecyst (mega drive), from MS-dos, in 1997/98 ^^ '

FALSE NEWS for Citra; 1. Citra MMJ has been updated this December 2024 (this is the 2nd update this year's). 2. Lime3DS & PabloMK7 Citra are DEAD!!! (Since November 2024) 3. Azahar (is the latest Nintendo 3DS Emulator in the making) created by the maker of Lime3ds & PabloMK7. 4. Panda3D (another well-known Nintendo 3DS Emulator on PC, 1st None Citra fork or none uses of Citra coding). A beta ver. of Panda3DS app is also available for Android.

Rpcs3 is updated multiple times a day, I would say it has easily the most active dev team I have ever seen and the progress is fantastic. I remember the first time I fired up that emulator getting like 5 frames a second on what was at the time a higher end PC back around 2012 I think, now I can fire up almost any PS3 Game I would want to play and get it to run. Some games might require you to tweak some settings before they will run well like God of War 3, you can make it fully playable with some adjustments.

Tbf on rpcs3 emulator, the architecture of ps3 chip set is so different and complex with high amount of custom made components that makes it hard to optimize after a certain point, they are limited in hardware rather than bringing software improvements. And while they are trying to make the home menu "playable they are implementing bew code that makes otger games playable as well, they have been working on PS move and savestates as well. In short i wouldn't call it stagnant personally

But would you prefer having PS Move working or playing GoW 3 and Ascension properly? I think most people would prefer games running more smoothly. That’s basically what I meant in this video. If the RPCS3 team doesn't make another single improvement to performance what they have done already is beyond a miracle. Sorry @AlexwpiGame , you say that RPCS3 has not had significant advances in terms of performance. However, I have played heavy games at 30fps-4K with a 970 (2014) and a X5650 (2010) like silent hill downpour or siren's blood curse. And currently with a 11800H I can play everything at 4K almost at 60 fps. How do you explain that?

Regarding RPCS3, I've read somewhere that newer updates focus on CPUs with AVX-512 instruction sets. That means that you need a Ryzen 7000 series or newer to have access to that instruction set (problem is, AM5 builds are still quite pricey compared to AM4 that don't have AVX-512). Now that I have a Ryzen 5 4600G I'm happy I can at least play some PS3 games

Thank you Alexwpi, I feel this video is quite necessary right now. Emulation is stagnating or reaching points where these teams are hitting walls specifically when it comes to performance. What we need is better communication with developers that may want to join these teams and push innovation forward. It's not to knock anything they have done or are doing but communication with the gaming community about these projects is never a bad thing.

Some people questioned in an earlier comment if it was a coincidence or not. I think my channel is too small to impact RPCS3, but it’s good to see them showing something. Since 2023, there haven’t been any decent updates-just the implementation of PS Move and PS3's SMB. That’s not going to make your GoW 3 playable.

The state of Xbox Emulators are really sad. Experiencing Halo and Gears of War as they originally were, natively, on Linux (and any non-losedows OS in general) is alone worth it. For me this video is a great mistake, i'm usually very happy to open youtube and launch your video, but this one is just wrong. If there only where performance to improve none of us would be using emulation. No Graphical User Interface, because the time spend developping it would take time allocated to improve performances. No netplay (forget RPCN and Pretendo). If I was a developper of Vita3k, RPCS3 or Xenia (to name a few), I would lose hope by seing the emulator listed as STAGNANT even if it does have weekly updates. I think you have seen the incredible progresses with Switch and PS4, and asking why the other aren't as fast. There is a simple answer, they won't improve like this forever...

I'm sorry to disappoint this time, but as I said in this video, this is a personal opinion on the matter, and I believe all emulators still have room to improve. For example, PCSX2 has made great strides, eliminating ghosting and improving performance in games that heavily use blending. The PS2 is a console that's almost 25 years old and still sees notable progress. The same goes for Dolphin, which gets significant updates roughly every three months. The fact that RPCS3 hasn't had major improvements for over two years, along with Xenia, which hasn't even implemented Vulkan yet, worries me. However, I understand that the developers do this as a free service to the community. My intention was simply to list what is showing performance gains and what is literally stagnant.

Yeah I Definitely can't agree with this list. There's no way you can say RPCS3 and Xenia haven't made improvements when they have implemented things like Savestates, working on Move controller compatibility and Xenia adding Xenia Manager which makes the emulator 1000 times easier to operate. Alot of the issues with performance comes down to your hardware. If you don't have the Latest CPUs and higher end GPUs then you shouldn't expect to have the best performance. That's just a Given. I don't even look at test that don't have at least a CPU or GPU from the past 3 years because It's gonna run like shlt regardless especially the Higher end Emulators like RPCS3, Xenia, Xemu & Switch. Higher end Hardware is Necessary. There's no escaping that fact. Ppl need to stop complaining, stop being poor and Upgrade.

@NBWDOUGHBOY It’s always great to have a good discussion with you, but here are my points: 1. Xenia Manager is not developed by anyone connected to Xenia; it’s basically a third-party UI. 2. The savestate feature in RPCS3 is truly impressive-being able to dump 4GB of memory and then restore it to the exact point is something no modern emulator has even dared to try. 3. I assume people don’t usually build PCs specifically for emulators unless they work with them. So, most enthusiasts in the emulation world won’t have high-end hardware, but it’s possible that someone with a high-end PC might be interested in playing one or two games on emulators.

@AlexwpiGame I've always been a big fan of your channel for a while. I'll say this Xenia from what I've seen can be hit or miss with playability depending on the game. I guess I can only speak for myself. I personally am building all future PCs with High End Emulation in mind so That means having a really strong CPU and At least mid to high GPU (Nvidia Preferably). I guess it all depends on the individual. I care more about Emulation than standard PC gaming so my builds will be catered towards that. I don't do mobile gaming in Cell phones. Because I prefer the Best performance possible. I'll be looking out for the next upload and I'll just leave this discussion here and we'll agree to disagree and move on. Good luck and god bless.

You make it seem like it's our fault as emulator fans and testers that we don't have high end computers and just complaining about wanting playability. It's NOT. We just want to inform our emulation experience and wish for it to be better by reporting on it, hoping for it to be optimized enough for low to mid range PCs. Sure, we may complain sometimes, but that's out of love and passion for seeing the emulator to improve more. With totally no pressure on the devs, just feedback our part, that's all.

@Chokushi Performance = +FPS Accuracy = Most of the visual effects are reproduced just like on the base console. Low accuracy means that the emulator ignores most effects, such as smoke and terrain deformation effects, for example.

Just to share my point of view, I didn’t criticize any project except for the implementation of the PS3 home menu. I think this was truly unnecessary-spending almost a year on it and leaving everything else on hold was a poor decision. Of course, there are other good decisions, as mentioned here, like the savestate feature in RPCS3, which is really challenging, and RPCSN. However, I still believe that performance improvements would be more welcome than all these three features combined.

That's and interesting take on RPCS3, I have been having a lot of success lately, and even finished a few games that are listed as in-game on the compatibility list with just minor issues. I do agree Fly-cast has surpassed Redream (still the coolest name for an emulator), with all the options that are available on the latest updates. But the paid version of Redream is probably the most reliable plug and play emulator out, with the exception of the G.O.A.T. PCSX2.😆😆
