Just a note: The USS Maine was rated as an armored cruiser (despite being known to most citizens as the Battleship Maine), and had ACR-1 as her designation; but her near-sister the USS Texas was finished and rated as a second-class battleship, even though she was never officially given that designation. The USS Texas is considered by historians to have been the first U.S. battleship, and should probably be included in this list.

If you are referring to battleships fighting battleships, only South Dakota and Washington actually fought. (and won) But all of the battleships saw some action and palyed a part in WW2. The USS New York and Texas each saw duty in both WW1 and WW2. USS Wyoming was the oldest BB, and used as a gunnery training ship after the Utah was sunk at Pearl Harbor. The Utah, like Arizona, is still at Pearl Harbor, and there is a memorial there.

Jkdm 76 - The last Iowa class battleship was actually built but was not built into a battleship. It was built into the thickest armored hull Aircraft Carrier ever built. It became the U.S.S MIDWAY. Until the arrival of nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier, the Midway was one of the fastest conventional powered carriers ever built. It's narrow hull permitted it to be able to travel through the Panama Canal. She now resides as a museum in San Diego.
@sdavrider7 жыл бұрын
ghost magnet ...interesting idea but not so sure about that fifth Iowa. Wikipedia states that Midway benefited from Montana class technology. Wikipedia's page on the Iowa class states, "Four were completed, two more were laid down but canceled in August 1945, at war's end, and both hulls were scrapped in 1958. "
@neurofiedyamato87636 жыл бұрын
USS Midway was not the fastest conventional carriers, they were only 33 knots. The Shokaku class were the fastest at 35 knots. US carriers rarely top 33 knots. Japanese fleet carriers preferred higher speed at 34 or 35 knots whenever possible. Midway however carried the largest amount of planes at 120 planes, so much in fact a single carrier had trouble commanding and handling them all. US enjoy having more planes, generally US carriers had more planes than other nations.

@ObamaTookMyCat8 жыл бұрын
You missed 2 classes and an important ship. You missed the cancelled Colorado class ship BB47 which was the Washington cancelled around 70 percent complete, the 1920 South Dakota Class Battleships cancelled by the WNT, which included USS South Dakota BB49, Indiana BB50, Montana BB51, North Carolina BB52, Iowa BB53, and Massachusetts BB54. Tow ships of the Iowa Class Were missed as well, which were the Illinois BB65, and Kentucky BB66, which was also around 70 percent complete and had its bow placed on Wisconsin. The Montana Class Ships were to be Montana BB67, Ohio BB68, Maine BB69, New Hampshire BB70, and Louisiana BB71. Now i understand that this video may have only commemorated the ships actually put to sea in the USN and in commission, but we need to also realize ALL for the ships in the USN that were authorized, but not necessarily 100% built. These ships not completed were still technically part of the Fleet of all Us battleships, and again should be commemorated as well since they were given names, hull numbers, and assigned to dry docks to build them.

The USS Colorado was an awesome Battleship that was built right after WWI and saw limited action during WW2. It was one of the first Battleships in the American Arsenal that sported 15 and 8 inch guns. The Colorado Class was nearly obsolete when WW2 broke out because It was slow, heavy and not as agile as the new ships so it was phased out. There's my 2 cents worth.
@beammeup86546 жыл бұрын
Colorado class had 16" main guns. (4 pairs) The U.S. Navy NEVER USED 15" guns. Their secondary battery were 6" guns, NOT 8". (5 singles per side.) NO American Battleship had 8" guns. Some of the pre-dreadnaughts DID!! But not any after South Carolina BB-26. The Lexington class Carriers had 8" guns, but they were removed just as the war started.
@bullettube98636 жыл бұрын
A very well presented slide show with fine music! Okay, I'm nit-picking here but you spelled Nevada as Navada. Of course many people here will mention that the USS Kentucky was 70% complete when construction was stopped. Kentucky then sat in drydock for the next 10 yrs before being scrapped. Because it was launched but not officially commissioned, it's not on the navy list. It's bow section was removed to repair the USS Wisconsin. The 1st USS Maine and 1st USS Texas could have been first and second, , but this was only because Congress had authorized two "coastal" warships, and not battleships. None the less, they were the first big gun ships the navy built.

To KreigsMeister27, The USS Maine original designation as a cruiser was purely political, even HMS Hood carried the label and the farce was carried out even after the Washington Naval Treaty in 1920. Yes, but the last active ship was decommissioned in 1992, and the last two were removed from the reserve fleet in 2006. There are eight battleships that exist as memorials in various locations. (I've been on board the USS Massachusetts). We are likely to never commission them again because the cost of updating them to modern standards would exceed the cost of purchasing a new ship of similar capabilities which would be also be cheaper to operate.

Only 'capital' ship that wasn't named for a state; I had thought she was the first 'modern' US battleship and that they'd settled on the state naming scheme immediately after. Only state that DIDN'T ultimately have a commissioned battleship named after it was Montana; the planned class of post-IOWA super battleships wasn't built.

Thanks, Russ. Those New Englanders must have had a lot of "pull" to get a US battleship named for their mountain, eh?

Kersage lived on longer than any other pre Dreadnaught. She was converted to a craine ship and served into the 50's. Even gave up her name to a Carrier By the way Kersage was probably named after the Civil War cruiser that defeated the C.S.S Alabama.
