The fourth movement of Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3, the "Rhenish" Symphony, represents a solemn ceremony at a cathedral in Cologne, Germany. Allen Barnhill, principal trombone; Ryan Rongone, trombone (substitute); and Phillip Freeman, bass trombone, perform and discuss an excerpt with Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

Because the 1st part goes so insanely high! But nowadays the 1st player will nearly always use an alto trbn, which is what Schumann wrote for.

It’s a very difficult passage, especially considering that the trombones haven’t played at all during the symphony and basically have to start from cold

That’s nonsense. It’s not like they’re evening play on there own… every part is covered by another instrument somewhere in the orchestra

It really is just a nice example of how trombones can be very lyrical and solemn as opposed to the typical loudness and brashness that the trombone can be associated with.

There lots of examples where the trombones play a chorale like idea. Brahams 4 comes to mind. Either way….. it’s hardly fascinating.
