I tend to like cross plane sounds far more than flat plane v8s, they remind a little too much of 4cyl exhaust notes, but the F40 is a whole different beast. Same with the F355, can't get enough of the sound.

Camshafts got performance profiles so the engine idles rough and may "cough" in low rpms. Hence modern civilian cars have variable valve timing which allows for optimized valve lift throughout the rpm range. Race cars of course can have conventional camshafts and valve timings since they are meant to run at high revs!
