Hi Team, Enjoy this epic ride with the lovely Diana Navarro and her powerful vocal abilities. Here is some information, which I wish I would have added in the video: Diana's music often mixes genres such as Copla (poetic form common in Spanish writing) and flamenco with different rhythms such as Arabic or classical music. Flamenco was influenced strongly by Roma (Gypsies), who originally came from Northern India and India was at one point conquered (in part) by Arabs. Note: Spain was formed as an official state AFTER centuries of Muslim rule. Also, you can find Melisma (a group of notes sung to one syllable) in Gregorian chants, Arabic ;), Jewish, Orthodox Christian, African, Indian ragas, etc. Tho “world music” is a huge genre, it is common to find melisma among it. Please note for those who felt some kind of way about me referring to "Arabic notes" versus using the terms melismas etc (tho melismas would def. be a more accurate/better way to explain what she did here): Arab and African influences are all over and that's a beautiful thing. We all learn and are influences by each other. Arabs have actually been around for a very long time (before many Europeans conquered other countries and Spain even became it's own state) and they too fluctuate with notes when they sing (called Arabic quarter notes from what I’ve learned), so it’s not too far fetched to see a similarity in my opinion. Seeing those similarities is not to take away from the beautiful heritage and history of Spain, Andalusia etc. We all influence each other and ideally learn from one another. The world is a beautiful place.

I lived in Spain for over 6 years, and I absolutely love Diana Navarro. From what I heard from my time there is that there is a lot of crossover with Arabic music as the Arabs had conquered a lot of Spain at one point in history. It was explained to me that for a flamenco singer to be really good, they have to have "duende" which is to have soul or a heightened state of emotion. And Diana transmits the emotion of her songs so well, to the point that you don't even have to understand the words because the emotion is so powerful. It always affects me when I listen to the 2 songs of hers you have played. I am a real convert to flamenco music. There are different styles from traditional to modern and everything in between. I've been back in Australia since 2013, and mostly, I listen to Latin music because it is very expressive. ¡Viva la música latina!
@pedrofmc0000 Жыл бұрын
Please, don't call it Latin music. It's almost an insult to us. It's an anglo French invention to refer to the countries of South America. It began to be used in the XIX century. I could explain how it began to be used but it would take too long. Nowadays is used in the USA as a racial meaning, what's stupid. It doesn't exist such a thing as a Latin race. Believe me, the languages which come from Latin are called romance languages. Flamenco and all its different variants are from Spain and not from South America. Greetings form Spain.
@m.m.774911 ай бұрын

The Arabic sound you mention is called melismas and comes from flamenco, Diana Navarro's roots are flamenco and copla and she executes it perfectly. I suggest you listen to the song cuplerias which is a "copla" sung in a branch of flamenco called bulerias and if you really want to freak out with her voice listen to her sing the saeta de larios, another branch of flamenco sung a cappella to the Virgin Mary in the holy week of Malaga (Andalucia).

@CBOANDALUCIA Жыл бұрын
@@rosalieelliottofficial Saeta de Larios it's amazing. As a singer, no other music style could be most dificult, because a saeta it's only your voice and the kind of the 24 saetas you can chose to try. No music, a bunch of people around, you are alone with your talent, and usually you don't have a micro. Scary but an honour, bc it's a religious flamenco style used in the Holy Week (the week before Easter), when the statues of Christ and Virgin Mary are in the streets. Be chosed by a Brotherhood to sing to their statues, or received permission for do It, it's very serious responsability here in Andalucía, so not much professional singers even try. But Diana is an expert in the Málaga saeta kind, she's a "saetera" since very Young, and won a competition with 17 yo.

I got the same feeling of arabic influence when she sang. And with what skill! As if her vocal cords were played like a string instrument. Amazing. This has nothing to do with the forced vocal excercises so many other female singers are known for to just show off. And although the spanish chanson-esque style of the music isn't my cup of tea, you have to give credit to where it's due: to a singer, a true artist with incredible capabilities. Again, not as an end in itself but as part of an artistic expression. Okay, could've just said: not my music but she's one in a hundred million...😉💛

BTW: I made it a habit to always visit the featured artists and leave a like so they also will profit at least a little bit from your reviews. Maybe you could put that out as sort of a recommendation as well from time to time? Well, not that I do it, but that the rest of your riders do it as well and support the artists...

Spanish music, especially Andalusian music, has a lot of Arab influence due to the eight centuries of Muslim presence on the peninsula. Without that history, the famous Spanish guitar, heir to the medieval string instruments brought to Spain, would not exist. as well as the melismas: the intense vibrato. Typical of flamenco, it comes from the melismas of Muslim music. Diana Navarro sings here a mix between pop and copla, which is an Andalusian genre (much simpler than flamenco and very popular). In Spain we say that Diana is the woman with two lungs, due to her extraordinary vocal abilities.
@flamedealership Жыл бұрын
@@himilcecastulo5579 Thank you very much for your quick tour of hispanic music history. As I said in my original comment I truly admired her capability of using those melismas. I could only reference it by saying the usage of her vocal cords were similar to a string instrument being picked by a very skilled musician. She always was spot on. I couldn't hear one single missed note. And I admire her for that even though the music itself doesn't effect my old German soul..😉💛💛

Flamenco was influenced strongly by Roma (Gypsies), who originally came from Northern India and India was at one point conquered (partly) by Arabs. Before Spain was a united state, it was under Muslim rule for centuries. Arab and African influences are all over. We all learn and are influences by each other.
