Listening Game - Guess the Sound
Listen to the sounds and guess the 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀! A great listening game for the entire family! 🙂
00:00 - Introduction
00:18 - 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗶 𝗩𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮 is among the oldest of Indian musical instruments. From the references to Vedic writings, it can date back to around the first millennium B.C. Temple sculptures from the 2nd century B.C. show a type of veena being played.

03:38 - 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗿: The Santoor’s name comes from the name Shata- tantric, meaning a Veena of hundred strings. It consists of a hollow box with twenty five bridges, each having four strings resting on it. It is played with the help of two wooden mallets known as mezrabs. The santoor has traditionally been used in the music of the Kashmir valley as an accompaniment to Sufi music.

The violin has evolved to become the principal accompaniment for Carnatic music, but is also extensively used as a solo instrument in both Carnatic and Hindustani styles. It is accompanied by the mridangam, tabla, and allied percussion instruments like the ghatam.
05:18 - 𝗚𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗺 is an ancient percussion instrument in used Carnatic classical music. The ghatam consists of a clay pot reinforced with brass, copper and iron fillings. The ghatam is used in conjunction with the mridangam in Carnatic music. Instruments similar to the ghatam include the gharha of Punjab and the matka of Gujarat.
05:38 - 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a Carnatic percussion instrument. It is a tiny instrument held in the left hand, shaped like prongs with an additional metal stick running through the length of the instrument.
05:58 - 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗺 (or Mridangam) the main percussion instrument of the South indian or Carnatic form of music, and is used to accompany vocalists and all types of melodic instruments of south india. It is also used as an accompaniment for Bharatnatyam and other forms of Indian dance. The rhythm patterns in South Indian music are complex and mathematical, so mridangam players have to be really good with their numbers, but there are only six basic types of stroke. They are combined together to make some really fascinating combinations.
06:18 - 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗮 is a string instrument found in certain northern and western states of India. It is used as accompaniment for religious music of the Sikh tradition (Gurmat Sangeet).
