Hello, Adriaan, so nice to see you again. And good morning, also, to you, Alan. I love these practice/rehearsal/informal moments. They always make me want to hear her do the song in an official public performance, because she tends take it even further and more "finished/polished." Thank you, Adriaan. Your detailed observations give words to the details I hear that draw me in to the song, again and again, to hear it anew each time. I love Angelina Jordan, the vocal artist and composer. 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜

Thank you Ellen! It’s so nice to hear from you! Angelina’s songs can indeed be enjoyed over and over again. Part of this magic may be the large number of fine details she puts in her songs. I’ve come to realise that I very likely only get some of them. I love to share them with others, hoping they will point out some that I have missed. This song is special to me, because Angelina is singing in an empty hall and I was listening to it in an empty airport terminal (Beijing T3) where I had an 8 hour layover in the evening. I started writing down some of the details and I thought: I have to send this to Alan. Maybe he can use it in one of his videos. Angelina Jordan is the most talented vocal artist I know. A vocal Picasso, as many say ❤❤❤. Best wishes Ellen! 😘

So often I just enjoy the beauty of her sound without thinking of the complexity that she so naturally puts into that sound, her music. I always enjoy your, and others, ability to glean hidden techniques used by artists to enhance their craft, it's always interesting. But only after I have first let myself go, and just basked in the pure pleasure of her music. Wonderful background, as usual.

There is no doubt in my mind that Angelina is the most complex vocalist in existence. She is the MASTER of transition: chest to mixed to head voice to falsetto and back, in any order; breathy to crystal clear (and with total control of those vocal folds to allow exactly how much air through that she wants); pianissimo to piano to belt and back, again in any order; rapid vibrato to slow vibrato to an almost stutter vibrato and the list goes on. ALL of these transitions are completely seamless and appear effortless, and are not just randomly applied, but are deliberately and expertly used exactly where she deems appropriate to maximise the message and emotion in the song. Her absolute mastery of all these techniques enables her, to a vastly greater degree than any other artist I know, to sing the same song, even the same word, 20 times and make each time sound different. As for her focus, that is just as astounding; the first time I noticed it was when she was reading the lyrics during some of her performances, and never once missing her pitch, timing or phrasing!

Coupled with her own genius abilities of musicality, she has been mentored by the most improvisational jazz singer of all time, that being Billie Holiday. Billie is separated from all other musical influences which she confirmed in an interview where she stated that if not for the legendary music of Billie Holiday, there would be no Angelina Jordan as we know her today. To a much more minor degree, she has adopted the 'slurring' of words that was made famous by Amy Winehouse that she will use on occasion, but make no mistake about it. Angelina is the reincarnation of Billie, and when combined with her personal decisions singing ballads, the end result is beyond miraculous. Billie also had 'a thing' about using her voice to emulate actual musical instruments and Angelina has done this as well when she sang 'Mount Everest'.
@adriaanrijllart52134 ай бұрын
And with all her techniques and the understanding of the song, she is able to transmit the emotions of the song to the listener, like no other. I’ve rarely had shivers from music and never tears before I heard Angelina

I still puzzle over why Angelina's art has such an impact on me over the many other musical artists that I enjoy. The insights of others impacted in a similar way are enlightening indeed. I don't think analysis hurts the enjoyment at all. To the contrary it only enhances it. On the other hand, people who comment about her appearance or lifestyle choices may verge on being inappropriate. Angelina has put so much on social media and has added so much to my enjoyment of life.❤ Thanks Alan and Adrian.
