My name is Kaiya Pelletier and I am documenting my metal journey as I discover and listen to metal music for the first time ever. I'm in my mid 20's and I've been a singer songwriter and performer for over 10 years. Currently I'm in 3 bands and gigging around in Asheville, NC where I live. I have a Bloodhound named Spooner, I love mexican food, Stephen King, collecting CD's and cassettes and my favorite movies are tied between Jurrassic Park and Alien.

It's so weirdly catchy too. Almost pop somehow [like you can whistle it. It's a sweet little tune]. But so anti in the sound. Darkthrone rocks.

Black Metal is known for the blast beats and fast tremolo guitar picking, but something about it has always felt meditative to me. I think it might be the repetition.. it just puts me in a very relaxed and calm mood despite how raw it is. The new wave of black metal is really playing up this aspect with Atmospheric Black Metal and Blackgaze, which I also love. It's hard to really say what is so special about black metal because on its surface it's really unpolished, but if the vibe hits you then it really sticks with you.

@keeperofknowledge4120 It's weird with me, I was a very devote christian when I got into black metal. I loved the imagery, lyrics and back story of it but was still a bible thumper. Hell I still know a few christian death metal bands I used to listen to. When I turned 22 I finally left the religion.

@keeperofknowledge4120 I love it when people can set aside their beliefs and appreciate beautiful music. I've been around so many people that refuse to hear any kind of music that isn't gospel or country because it's "of the devil" and it makes me sad. Hell as an atheist I still enjoy some of those really old gospel songs. I love the entire soundtrack from O' Brother and will sing them every time I watch the movie. Music is art so just enjoy it. On another note I absolutely hate metal elitist and gatekeepers. Those people that say "that band isn't real metal". Who the fuck cares let people listen to what they enjoy.

My favorite Darkthrone album is actually their first album from 1991 named “Soulside Journey”. Imo, it is a perfect OSDM (old school death metal) record. It definitely has some bolt thrower influence. It still has a very blackened influence lyrically, artistically, and vibe-wise but you get to hear all the instruments clearly before they went full lo-fi black metal. Fenriz is a very talented drummer and he kills it on this album. One point to be made about black metal is that a lot of it was a response to the generic becoming and overproduced death metal at the time. So although I understand your thoughts on this tracks sound, it was completely the goal to have it sounds as cold, grim, and low production as possible.

Not much of a chance seeing them live, as they don't do concerts. Anyway, in 2004 there was a Satyricon show at Wacken where a special Darkthrone set feat. Nocturno Culto (vocals/guitars) appeared and they played a couple of Darkthrone songs live incl. Transilvanian Hunger. May you find it somewhere. And if I am asked about what the most atmospheric concert I ever attended - there you go!

For me darkthrone is the definition of a metal band. If youre just listening to their early black metal youre doing yourself a disservice. Their entire discography experiments with many sounds yet they never lose their identity as darkthrone. I think their reputation as a bm band isnt fair because they are so much more than that.

Dark Throne are purely a studio band and their production varies according to which era you are cranking. This is from the mega raw trilogy of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th albums. My favorite albums by them is hard to say they have a lot of good albums. "A blaze in the northern sky, Panzerfaust, Ravishing Grimness, Total Death, F.O.A.D., the "too old too cold" EP is good. And the latest release Astral Fortress is really good and I believe you as a studio snob will like all the mixing in it.

Recommended tracks would be Blessed Be the Darkness, Baphomet's Call, Saatanan Varjon Synkkyydessä, Under the Eye of the Lord, By the Blessing of Satan, Celebration of Christ's Fall, Fist Of The Satanist and Mouth of Leviathan. P.S. Darkthrone's Unholy Trinity rules!

Darkthrone has released quite a few records over the years and latest just came out while ago. Worthy to check them all out!! Yeah, they where the first or least one of those who played black metal, in the way the Norwegian became famous for. You can hear influences from different metal styles on their records. Everybody has their own fav era of bands catalog. Some like only this early black metal albums, some maybe all and so on. Great band still. I like how they do their recordings. They sound a little different every time - but still Darkthrone!! One of my fav records from them is The Underground Resistance (2013), Goatlord (1996), The Cult Is Alive (2006), Astral Fortress (2022)..

Oh, and they ARE still together. It's just two guys and they don't like playing live and prefer to make music. Extreme Metal split in the 80s into Black Metal and Death Metal. They started as the Death Metal band Black Death, then changed ro Darkthrone and released the dm album Soulside Journey. Influenced in '91 by fellow Norwegian musicians and friends Emperor, Thorns, Mayhem, and Varg among others. That's when they became one of the founding bands of that scene. But yeah, glad to see you hitting the Black Metal and thanks for finally doing my favorite band. 'Where Cold Winds Blow' is probably my favorite track. Hard to pick a favorite album.

"I know like these original black metal bands were like garage basement recordings." Yep, this was recorded in Fenriz's bedroom on the cheapest 4 track that they could find in 1993, mostly because they were broke. That ended up unintentionally creating a trend and now people deliberately want to sound like that lol.

Darkthrone played their final show at the Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo, Norway on April 6, 1996. The band has since put out roughly a dozen records since then but absolutely refuses to play live. Or as Darkthrone guitarist Nocturno Culto puts it in an interview with Wall Of Sound, Darkthrone has turned down plenty of opportunities to be wealthy over the years. Culto explains that he and Fenriz view themselves as two dudes passionate about what they do, and have no interest in the public adoration that comes with live shows. Which is a super respectable decision… but how much are these tour and show offers for?

Cool thing about Darkthrone which is why I'm a longtime huge fan is there's still mystery to them, mainly musically, every record they put out, you never really know how they're gonna sound exactly, although at their core, they're still Black Metal, but they made so many changes and experiments to their sound, every couple records, they'll play a different style or genre!, some bands sounds the same each record so gets stale and boring, Darkthrone records always sounds different from each other, vocally too, some records, Nocturnal Culto, the main vocalist, does all while others, Fenriz does some vocal parts too, Culto has changed his vocal style on various releases over the years, as bandmate Fenriz puts it " we don't rehearse vocals, we just go in and do them, so i never know how Ted(Culto) is gonna do them, so it's always a surprise" good example is on Panzerfaust, which they did after Transylvanian Hunger, i listened to the commentary track they put out for their records, they recorded Panzerfaust in Fenriz house and were doing the vocals in his living room, he thought that NC was gonna do them like he had before, they been hanging out and getting drunk and when it got time to do record his tracks, Culto decided to do them a little different, he was screaming them so loud, Fenriz said the whole house shook!it's the angriest, craziest primal screams i think ever recorded to tape, you can head how much pain he's in screaming and in some places sounds like he's gonna puke! Darkthrone is definitely a musical journey🤘⸸⛧⸸🤘😎

Darkthrone has dabbled in various styles and I love them all. I especially love their record Hate Them. It’s still kinda Black Metal but more closer to what they were evolving into Black and Roll. IMO

you can't understand this music unless you have been in norway... it's a sound scape... walk in a forest on a mountain in norway in winter, and you will understand, jump of a cliff into the fjord in trondheim even in summer, you will understand. been there, done that. jumping into the trondheim fjord in winter ... would have almost certainly killed me.

Fenriz says the songs came from series of depressions; katabasis to anabasis. "Music for the evil in man." Darkness is perhaps a better word than evil; the music isn't evil. Pessimistic meditation.
