He's actually not lip synching. This sounds very different from the album version. Tobias plays the role of Papa, currently Papa IV. Each Papa has a different mask with face paint so that's why his mouth doesn't seem to move very much. You should listen to the first album for more heavy stuff (though there's heavier stuff on every album) and Cirice, which is the song they won a Grammy for. Ghost is very lore heavy but you don't need to know the lore to get the music. It helps though. The basic idea is that Ghost is headed by Papa, essentially a Satanic Pope, who uses the band to spread their religion to the masses. Each album has a new singer but they're always Tobias Forge. It's a satirical "religion" that pokes at the hypocrisy of organized religion.

To add to that, I think Tobias talked about this, that the devil would try to seduce people, which is better done by having very accessible music. Their whole concept revolves around the antichrist trying to take over.

The mouth doesn't move because he wears a mask that is also painted, (and also painted underneath).The aesthetic of Ghost is that it is the darkness, topics and imagery of metal, but accepted and intentionally catchy and pop, thus mainstream (and Disney channel). Earlier stuff is a bit heavier/darker, "Mummy Dust" is a heavier track, and the lyrics "You will never, ever walk alone" are actually quite creepy, kinda like The Police "Every Breath you Take", creepy lyrics barely hidden inside a pop-song

Thanks for checking them out. This band is really great actually. Don't let the "not heavy sound" deter you from the song writing brilliance. This band has been around since 2006 (although technically they didn't really branch out until 2010) and have been slowly growing their following over time. People have always been curious as what to classify them as, not quite heavy metal, not quite hard rock, but not quite pop music either. If there's anything to learn is that you should just enjoy the music and worry about categories later!

Saw them on that tour too here in Georgia. Absolutely loved the live performance, and in my opinion the live version of Rats is better than the album version because of the backup singers. Such a good concert, hopefully I will be able to see them again!

I never feel like Ghost is trying to be hardcore or edgy. They fit in a pocket that isn't being used. Ghost, as an act, is a take on church culture. But from the Satanic side. It's The Beatles, but with an evil twinge. Earlier work it was more obvious. The stage persona of Papa Emeritus is a take on the Pope. He's the leader of the "church." Each album, a new Papa is introduced. All are played by Tobias Forge under the mask of Papa. So, since they are on their fifth album. This is the fourth Papa Emeritus. The 4th album, Prequelle, it was a Cardinal. Who was anointed Papa for Impera. Confusing for those that don't really know the band? Yup. For those that keep up, it's a celebration. I feel trying to compare what Ghost is doing to most other metal bands is wrong. The look is misleading. You expect something brutal. Tobias uses a lot of older music as a basis on newer albums. The earlier work, especially Opus, is more metal in sound. They don't use growls, all clean vocals. You are not wrong about thinking pop. I've always felt they were Top 40, but singing about Satan. Yes, the music you listened to is commercial. It's meant to be. Tobias wants to be a stadium act. So the music has evolved to a more palatable sound. Any band that does not evolve, gets dull. Gatekeepers will want to revoke my metal card. But I don't care for vocals that are constantly grunts and incomprehensible. I don't need ear bleeding guitars. I want to understand what's being said. Coming from a teenager in the 90s that was all about hip hop. I focus on what's being said. If the vocalist is squealing like a pig, I don't find that entertaining. If it sounds like they are constantly coughing and I need to look up what's being said. I don't enjoy it. That's one of the reasons I enjoy Ghost. I can hear what Tobias is saying. Another is the music is sounding like what I grew up listening to. Touches of my parents music. Mixes of 60s, 70s, and 80s. The piano in Spillways reminds me of Love Isn't Always on Time by Toto. Deus in Absentia feels like a stage play, I love Phantom of the Opera. Dance Macabre is so 80s, it hurts. Kiss the Go-Goat is very 70s. The mixture of old and new is what makes me a fan. If Ghost isn't for you. All good. It's music. It's subjective. It's like pizza. There are so many toppings that can create a pizza. If you don't like pepperoni. Nothing wrong with that. If you want a pizza with chicken, pineapple and onions. That's your taste. Who is anyone to tell you you're wrong? Pizza is music, music is pizza.

They've been referred to as "Scooby-Doo" metal, which is a fair critique, (certainly not Doom Metal, that's way off) but he certainly does not want to be heavier on this particular album, Tobias was literally going for Def Leppard Hysteria era production style and sound and he nailed it. It is all very intentional and somewhat contrived with the stage makeup "schtick" and the spooky aesthetic and that was the plan all along, there is a sense of humor in their music.

the problem here is listening to songs from the new album. back it up a bit. and he's not lip syncing, he's wearing a mask, and his lips and mask don't exactly flow together perfectly in that way. I want you to do this again, except do it the way you normally do and listen to 1 or 2 songs from several albums. I feel like you didn't really give them a decent chance by listening to two new songs. Bands evolve for the better or for the worse, and their new album is....not particularly good when compared to their older stuff.

Came here to say pretty much the same thing. Go back and check out their older albums too. The songs "Ritual" "Year Zero" "Square Hammer" Mummy Dust" and "Cirice" should give you a good understanding of their older sounds. The last two albums (and an EP) is where they started getting more poppy. "Dance Macabre" "Rats" and "Mary on a Cross" are good representations of that era, pre -Impera. When listening to Ghost, don't have your "heaviest metal is best metal" cap on. They're more like "80's kid who listens to equal parts ABBA and Slayer starts a rock band, with lots of satanic garnish" type vibe.

If I'm not mistaken the commercial aspect is on purpose. The story the band follows is they are supposed to be a poppy satanic band that lures you in with catchy music and induces you into the dark anti-catholic church. Also I think you should definitely check out more of their music. Cirice is a masterpiece, year zero is all satanic and dark, Faith is a personal favorite as well as Majesty, and He Is is beautiful

Their earlier stuff is a little heavier. Their sound is now a little closer to hard rock/heavy metal of the 80s. I think the most apt comparison is probably The Scorpions. You should check out Ritual, Square Hammer, From the Pinnacle to the Pit and Cirice.

It is pretty rich to listen to a band that is very successful, that's been around for a decade, and that you have no knowledge of and then claim that they "don't know what they're doing" or that they "want to be harder". Ghost is doing exactly what TF wants them to do right now. It's all intentional. It's fine to not like them and it's fine to not know a lot about a band when you first react to them, but you shouldn't assume you know far more than you actually do based on your very limited knowledge. Weird. I've never listened to a new band and thought that I knew better what they were trying to achieve than they did.

Google has some outdated info. They no longer go by Ghost B.C. in the US. It's been that way for years now. The BC stood for 'because copyright'. When Ghost started to migrate out of Europe, another band already had the name Ghost. It was a small band that I don't think is even together anymore and never made it big. So Tobias won the name copyright battle, and now they're just called Ghost now everywhere.

Ghost is a very "each album has a unique sound or a vibe to it" band. A majority of fans have one favorite album and one they just don't care for. Originally they were a lot more stripped down, gothic, and vintage metal. Then as you progress through their catalog, they branch out and flex their writing muscles with a lot more grandiose and pop-y sound while still trying to retain satanic under/overtones

*_Twenties_* and *_Respite on The Spitalfield_* are two quite different songs you should try next. Same album. Although their thing is to literally be mainstream, they do have some cool deep cuts. If one can handle the 80's brush they went with here, this latest album is geniusly put together. I always skip spillways and one other song though. Peace!

Spillways took a long time for me to warm up to, but the message of the lyrics resonates with me. Give it a few listens, you may catch things you didn't hear on your first listen, and it will probably grow on you, too. I love the music video for Call Me Little Sunshine, and the video might give you better idea of the song. As far as understanding Ghost's aesthetic, I suggest checking out the lore behind the band. There are reasons for Papa's appearance as well as the Nameless Ghouls. The costumes for the Ghouls this album have had mixed reviews from fans, but the idea is they are more like gas masks, not diving helmets, and the song Twenties from this album would probably explain the choice. Regardless, they put on a fantastic live show, and many of their songs sound so much heavier live. In the end, Ghost may or may not be for you, but give them a few more listens. They're a slow burner band, and you may be surprised by them.

I remember when I saw an article about Phil Anselmo in a metal magazine years ago he said his favorite band nowadays was Ghost they were just starting out at the time. I was like I need to check these guys out because Im a huge Pantera Fan and i was sure Ghost music was heavy because of the costumes and Phil liking them but then I listened to them I was like WTF is this crap 😂 then never listened to them again for a few years. He wears a Prosthetic mask when he sings. That's why it looks like he is not moving his mouth and lip syncing. He does it for the Papa Emeritus costume. If you go see them live they are 10 X heavier and louder. Seriously the bass sound will make you feel like your having a heart attack. For the Prequelle tour the bass sound during Miasma was so loud I almost left the show until a bar tender gave me some ear plugs.

Became a fan from the first 3 albums. Musically were considerably different than now, but always liked the aesthetic and stage presence. Back in the day, they sounded more like early Black Sabbath, which I think is why they still get labeled doom metal sometimes. Sound is more accessible now, but it's not what I want to hear.

The aesthetics and everything are very well planned, there're centuries of history from the first albums, it started in medieval times with the first popes (singers) and the Ghouls (musicians) dressing like monks but the latests are set in modern times and have apocalyptic themes, hence the new modern masks. If you are going to check them, check their first 3 albums, those were the ones that were really unique, they had their own sound, later they just made more mainstream, generic if you will sound, which is that you listened here.

Their first album was more doom and gloom, hard and simple. Impera is an 80s arena rock inspired album based around the rise and fall of civilizations. Taking in one song here and there makes it harder to get a good feel of Ghost as a band. They have a lore that makes it fun to follow along with them as times goes on. As a first time visitor to your channel, I appreciated your dive into the lyrics, meanings, etc. I saw them open for Mastodon in 2012 and like I said, they were VERY basic, and heavy.

I heard them years ago and like a few of their songs but this year something clicked. I don't really care for lyrics and vocals but I sing all their songs out loud. When I went to see them in Asheville last month I sung my heart out lol. I still like heavier music but Ghost is infectious and fun. Their later music sounds happy and cheerful but has a dark layer underneath and works well with their current image.

These were poor song choices for an intro to this band, honestly. I enjoy both those songs, but I consider them more enjoyable once you "get it" in terms of what the band is about. I'd recommend trying 'Rats', 'Cirice', and maybe 'Square Hammer'.

Like them or not, Tobias wouldn’t be caught dead lipsynching. He is incredible live, and his pitch is always on. The band is also top tier professional musicians. I like the whole catalog, but it’s hard to judge Ghost based on these two songs. In my opinion, they aren’t his strongest.

I'm new to Ghost as well. I'm an 80s Metalhead, and you know what this sounds like? 80s-era Alice Cooper, but with a cleaner voice. (Alice has more grit in his voice.) But it definitely has a Hair Metal sound though. It sounds familiar, but I can't quite place what band this sounds like. Maybe a bit like Slaughter or even Bon Jovi in a way. I just got a new acquaintance that is a huge fan of this band. And he's 9 years younger than I and it kinda explains why he'd like this band. Because it's essentially what Hair Metal would have sounded like in the 90s. I was born in '73...just turned 49 the day after you posted this video, and he's 40...born in '82, so he would have gone thru his formative years in music tastes in the 90s, however he says he first started listening to music the same year I got into metal, 1986.

Ghost is less of a band like other bands, and more of a concept band/ project. The band is an act, the members are characters, and the albums are distinctly themed, with variations in genre. The short of the overarching story is that “Ghost” is a band meant to act as a marketing tool for a satanic church to convert the masses. It’s less like a band putting out music, and more like a long running stage play.

They are no longer "Ghost B.C." in the US. That was due to a Japanese band having licensed "Ghost" in the US. It's not an issue anymore. I discovered Ghost in 2013 with Papa II and have been a fan since.

Ghost just does there thing. You get it or you don’t. They go from metal to pop rock. There videos can be hilarious. Tobias knows exactly what he’s doing. Tobias writes all the songs. His recordings vs live shows are 2 different groups of people. His recordings are basically himself and 2 other people. None of his recording players tour with him. It’s a unique setup. He controls everything.

I would call them a Christian Rock band but instead of it being Christian, it's Satanic, but still with the Christian Rock vibe. The whole point of Ghost is to run with the "satanic panic", look scary and provoke the radical religious groups. Because being provocative gets people talking, and those who dare to actually listen get hooked on the catchy melodies and riffs. It's all masterfully planned, to be pop but advertise as scary and satanic. I like their aesthetics and especially the older songs, they have this eerie feeling in them which I love. The new stuff is also good, I'm just not that invested in it. They're an awesome live band, seen them twice; Once opening for Metallica and their own headline show.

I think you’d like their album Infestissumam from 2013, it’s darker and heavier. That album is more of a cross between psychedelic rock and doom metal. Their latest album sounds like 80s arena rock.

If you don't like a Ghost song, just listen to an older release, or just wait for the next record. Because Ghost always changes. They're not stale and stuck in the same old sound. They're constantly evolving. That's a big reason why I like them. Most bands will release a record that sells well, and then they're afraid to do anything outside of that safe comfort zone they found success with in the past. And the music suffers this regurgitation. Same album over and over. Not Ghost though.

Stop expecting it to be heavy. It's not supposed to be. Pretend you found this in your dad's classic rock/early metal record collection from the late 70's or early 80's. That's what it's supposed to sound like. Ghost is occasionally heavy, but always awesome. Think of it as a cross between Journey and Queen...but Satanic lol. It's edgier than you give it credit for. You need to wrap your head around the lyrics before you'll see it.

Even though I like these two songs, you really didn't listen to their best tracks by far. It's really a shame. And you can't see Cardinal Copia's lips move because he's wearing a mask. It definitely has their live sound, which they do very well.

I def prefer the first couple albums over the new stuff. There is nothing wrong with the new stuff artists grow. I wished they would have went a different way with their sound but its not my band LOL. I agree with the Disney channel music LOL. Their first albums were awesome check out the song Year Zero.
