Irans Proxies war against Israel did not expect to see Israel reaction to be so extensively brutal, the Oct 7 attack was supposed to shame Israel’s weakness and unpreparedness, little did they think that Israel would consider it an Existenal threat and they underestimated Netanyahu and the Israel resolved. Iran has definitely underestimated Israel s Mossad Intelligence and the IDF. Iran is going to be next after Assad and Syria

People such as Sinwar , islamists, don't see the world in the same way as perhaps more Western orientated people . They have a different set of moral values, a different ideology that is driven by an unshakable belief based on a 14th Century creed. There are basically three types of humans to them: Moslims, who should always be on top, ruling, then below them "people of the book" ie Christians and Jews, who have to pay tax to Moslims, and below them others who have to convert or die.

China is the long term threat, but it is also locked into a trend of long term decline. If the world can keep China contained for a decade, the threat will fade. Same for Russia, economic stagnation, demographic decline, etc, will cause the threat of Russian imperialism to fade. For the ME, as renewables take hold, their economic relevance and power will decline.

The interviewers framing was bizarrely, but not unexpectedly, hostile to Israel. Ulterior motives? Would it be a good idea if the joyous Syrians were to send a message of thanks to the mourning families of the dead IDF soldiers who gave their lives to weaken Hezbollah and precipitate the fall of Assad. Without their sacrifice thousands would still be suffering torture in Assad’s dungeons.

Saying China is the long-term threat assumes that China will exist in the long term. China is an empire held together by the CCP, just as the Russian empire was held together by the Tsar and the Soviet Union was held together by the Bolshevik party. China has collapsed more times than any other historic country, most recently happening in the 1920s and has only been unified on its current borders since the late 1950s when the Red Army invaded Tibet and the provinces of Western China. A lot of geopolitical experts are predicting the implosion of the Chinese empire by 2050 or even by 2030. The political pressures on China now are worse than they've been in a century, with riots, mass protests and terrorism extremely common despite the efforts to prevent all public displays of opposition, bad relations which just about every country on their border, frequent purges of the party leadership and military, and the economy on the verge of total collapse. Hence, the China issue might resolve itself like the Soviet Union did.

An excellent interview! I'm not thinking so much of Sir Richard's observations as of the interviewer's ability to pose trenchant and penetrating questions and her willingness to let Sir Richard speak. And when she did address a potential "gotcha" issue - the possible flaws in intelligence leading up to the Iraq war - she gave him space rather than getting on a moral high-horse; and he said some things very believable, even though he evaded addressing anything directly. And, as he implied, time will tell.

Hasn’t anyone told Dearlove? He keeps using phrases like “how do we manage dealing with China”, as if Britain has a consequential role to play. Britain is a post-industrial wasteland in economic terms. Maybe he has convinced himself that the UK and US are one and the same but I’m not sure that fantasy is shared by our cousins across the sea… the biggest demographic in the US by nationality are those with German origins, not British. Time to wake up and smell the coffee. On a more positive note, if you give up the expensive delusion of global Britain, maybe you could feed more of the growing number of starving people in the UK or help your impoverished pensioners to heat their houses.
