I thought the Soviets were a quick seconds. Didn't Iran vote against partition on November 29 1947. TBF though, those are just secondary, Iran before 1979 was an asset to the ME, not a force that split the Arabs and brought terror to Israel. If the Shah hadn't been so brutal and was more of a reformist, then he would've kept his throne. Out of all Muslim-majority countries, the Iranians are far more likely to accept democracy. They had it until the CIA undermined it and they got the Shah. All the best to Iran.

as someone who was in Iran during the Iranian revolution I can tell you that the shah was never as repressive as this regime. in the last 12 months the press was completely free to print whatever it wanted. the secret police was officially disbanded and dissolved 2 months before the regime collapsed. all political prisoners (who were essentially terrorists) were released en masse. khoemini arrived in Tehran while shah's govt was still in power and even gave Khomeini a military helicopter to take him to his residence. the shah did everything wrong and the govt fell. khamenei is a very shrewd student of history. he won't make the same mistakes. in the last 2 years over 130,000 people have been arrested and hundreds have been officially executed. I hope I'm wrong, but this regime won't fall as easily as sec straw thinks or wishes.

@@fergusflood8558 sure but then every religion has a history of intolerance at some point and this problem is not so specific to Islam. And of course this is a wider problem than religion because humans gain protection from being part of groups and conflict between groups often results in intolerance of members of groups with whom they are in conflict. Furthermore, Islam, as is the case with all other religions and ideologies, has conflicting and contradictory positions regarding tolerance of other viewpoints. Perhaps we are living in an age of extremism. Regarding Israel and Palestine, research seems to indicate the last 7 years or so have seen a breakdown of trust between Israelis and Palestinians which of course then often leads to intensified conflict. The theocracy in Iran have over 20,000 people who can fill the leaders position. The revolutionary guard have only one real function which is to ensure the continuation of the theocracy. In addition the army will be used against the people and it is over a million strong. Iran itself is an impregnable mountain fortress immune to invasion without huge casualties. An attack by Israel and/or the USA will never set the people free to from the theocracy. It could only hope to degrade the economy of Iran and hence reduce the capacity of the state to fund its interests ouside of Iran. A useful target would be Karg Island which accounts for 80% of the Iranian economy and is extraordinarily vulnerable. Iran's contribution to the world's oil supply accounts for approximately 2% and although oil prices would spike, this would only be short lived in the order of months, yet currently the US administration will not consent to this as it will affect the elections. I suspect that Israel will nonetheless attack Iranian oil and then ask forgiveness of the US. Just my 2¢.

Israel simply isn't a threat to the survival of Iran or the its government. Support of the groups, with the exception of Hamas, is all about projecting power against the Suni Muslim states.

Mr Jack Straw we iranian want our prince and our Queen Shahbanoo back to have a democratic country with freedom like before. All Iranian now realised which countries were behind our Shah to be over thrown. All Iranian are aware that Iran was occupied by two countries in 1920 due to our oil and gas resources we have. Khomeini was supported financially by France and mojahedin were supported by George Soros. We Iranian have demanded constantly not to supported the mullahs in Iran but sadly British Government have always supported and given advise to Governmebt in Iran. So Iran will not be in a mess as long as Britain and USA don’t make decision for Iran who is going to be a leader like what you did for Afghanestan. Our prince will be back as king exactly like King Charles in this country. It is about time that human right get on top priority in the whole world rather than a few strong countries make decisions for other countries.

A 'regime' and an 'oligarchy' are distinct yet sometimes overlapping political concepts. A regime refers to the rules and norms by which a government operates; it encompasses the institutions, laws, and procedures through which a state exercises power. Regimes can be democratic, authoritarian, or somewhere in between. An oligarchy, on the other hand, specifically denotes a form of government where power resides in the hands of a small group of people-often the wealthy, the privileged, or the influential. While an oligarchy is a type of regime, not all regimes are oligarchies. In essence, a regime is the broader framework of governance, whereas an oligarchy is a particular mode within that framework, characterized by the concentration of power among a select few.
