“Russia is slowly wooing Turkey away from the alliance, Erdogan is not an easy partner within the Western alliance and Russia sees an opportunity here to bring Turkey much closer into the Russian orbit together with Syria.”
Foreign correspondent for The Times, Michael Binyon, analyses the meeting between Bashar al Assad and Vladimir Putin in Russia yesterday and its implications on Nato and the war in Ukraine.

Al-Assad in Syria like Lukashenko in Belarus was saved from the wrath of his own people by the Russian army. Multiple thousands of their own people murdered, tortured, imprisoned. Now that Russia is in dire straits in Ukraine, extremely stretched, and Putin's hold on power is getting more precarious with each passing day, those two dictators and a handful of African tinpot tyrants are undoubtedly currently experiencing sleepless nights, chronic insomnia, and with good reason. Great report. Respect from Ireland.

Al Assad stayed precisely because he is supported by his people. If not, he would have fallen long ago. If you had known Syrians or anything about Syria in real life, you would have known this long ago. The Western mainstream media is not telling you the truth. They just created an excuse to attack Syria by their proxy ISIS. Funny how so many 'great' leaders in the west (of whom some are not even elected, like Rishi Sunak), have stepped down in the past few years, while Putin and Assad are still there, years later. Even anti-Putin polling organizations have put Putin's popularity at around 85%.

Assad has been largely rehabilitated within the Middle East and invited back into the Arab League, in fact it was primarily Western pressure - and of course their fear that his regime would collapse due to US involvement in the civil war - that led to his ostracism in the first place. In fact one could make an argument that Russian and US involvement in Syria was the precursor to this war. Sorry but I'm utterly failing to see how more and / or closer allies, particulalrly one in such a vital strategic location (and one with strong historical ties to Turkey) represents a failure or blunder for Putin. In fact the US backed failure to topple Assad probably marked the first real sign of the weakening power of Western hegemony to dictate global affairs.

If Syria would have let that gas pipeline through the US and Arab States would not have attempted regime change I suspect. Though preventing a Shia crescent was the other key factor in trying to take down Syria. Sadly the Syrians were hit be geopolitical struggles and country was destroyed. One of the few secular governments in the region.

US involvement in Syria is a small part and focused on ISIL and Kurds. It’s not very destabilizing. Russia, Turkey, Iran and the USA all meddle in the country that was once the intact Syria.
