Found another Lister on Craigslist of all places. Only had to drive a couple hours to pick it up. Didn't take very much to bring it back to life.

Runs like a watch, but I wouldn't fancy strapping it to my wrist! Good solid engines, those Lister ST-2 We have one one a generator. That thing just doesn't know when to quit. If you ever have a problem sourcing an oil filter for it, it's the same filter as the 1978 Reliant Robin (three wheel car).

I watch a number of "Narrowboat" vloggers from England. Lister is a common name amongst the manufacturers of small diesel engines that typically power these craft.

I watch a lot of narrowboat vids as well, specifically for the Listers. There seem to be tons of them still in operation over there. Love hearing them chug along down the river.

A very common engine fitted is a J-oint P-roject engine JP2 AND JP3 made by Ruston and Lister, as an attempt to stop each encroaching on each others spatiality.

When my parents bought my current home in Wales in 1961 there was Lister Startermatic generator feeding the property from a shed some 50m away. In the middle of the night if you turned a light on you would hear the generator start up and the light would flicker and come to life. To support this, it had a huge bank of batteries, mainly I guess because the generator would spin up under load. Also, the property had to have a gas refrigerator otherwise every time the thermostat triggered the generator would start. Anyway, the sale agreement included bringing in mains electricity, so my father sold the generator, and it went up to an estate in Scotland. Some years later, as a technician in the Army, I was sent out to Belize with a small detachment to provide a secure radio link for the Governor in the capital city Belmopan to the Force Commander at Airport Camp outside Belize city. Naturally we attempted a relay point halfway between and as the only technician I was to be based there. We moved into an abandoned wriggly tin prison compound opposite a police station on the road somewhere between Belmopan and Belize. The jungle had taken over the whole place, but I noticed some wiring, so I followed it back to a tin shed at the back and on prising the door open was astounded to see glistening in diesel a Lister generator. I was looking forward to getting it going but unfortunately the radio communications didn't work so 24 hours later we moved. The relay was moved up to hills beyond Belmopan, so I spent the rest of my deployment in Belmopan itself, just outside the Governor's residence initially camping with the Land Rover radio detachment, moving later into the government printery (sic) with an infantry company, where we set up a joint radio room. I often wondered if that Lister generator is still glistening in that abandoned jungle covered shed.

The US Coast Guard used single cylinder SRs in the Large Navigation Buoys (LNBs), 36 foot diameter monster buoys that replaced lightships. The year I went to the annual Lister training the instructor started with “This is the Lister SR . . .” Immediately someone interrupted and asked the class if anyone still had an SR. None, the SRs had all been replaced with STs. So the class was pretty much taught by the students based on our experiences.

A Lister with a starter, what luxury! In i973 I engineered a small harbor tanker. We had a Lister that was our emergency generator and it also ran the bilge pump. But it was hand cranked to start, with compression relief valves. After you got it turning good, you flipped the relief levers and it always started. Good strong engine!

This is the first one I've ever seen that doesn't have the camshaft sticking through the end of the gearcase for crank starting. All my other Listers can be either hand cranked or electric started.

You can't turn the rack lever to the cold start position with the way the linkage is on this one. I've never needed to use that setting anyway. As long as you give them some throttle before cranking, the rack opens and achieves the same thing.

I recently bought a Lister Petter LPW4 all mechanical fuel pump no electronics went through pretty much the same deal fuel line bleed new fuel filter adjusted fuel lift pumps to the rail here is the problem it starts and runs perfectly for about 15 minutes and then it just sputters slightly and dies will not restart until the engine has cooled off any ideas what can cause this

They were made in England and are way more common over there. They did see a lot of applications here in the States back in the 60's and 70's though. Portable light towers, generators, and power units in the oil fields mostly.

on the top of the inlet manifold are two holes / ports , your engines has " caps " on them , mine does not , it starts and runs fine but i would like to know what the ports are for ?
@bigchevy80
@bigchevy80 6 ай бұрын
Those are oil cups for starting. You pull the plungers, fill them with motor oil then push the plungers down to squirt the oil into the intake ports. It helps raise the compression on a dry engine that hasn't been run in a long time.

You can't put the knob in the cold start position with the way the shutdown linkage is configured on this engine. I've never had to use the cold start on any of my Listers anyway. All it does is hold the fuel rack full open.

They will run on used sump oil, any vegetable oil, and fish n chip oil if that oil is filtered and kept above the temperature point where the oil solidifies....... otherwise it's best to make biodiesel out of it before using f&c oil as a fuel....
