Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1965! If you saw any of our Albums of the Year videos then you'll kind of know how this goes, but we've added a few new twists.
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

There are places I'll remember. All my life, though some have changed. Some forever, not for better. Some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments. With lovers and friends, I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living. In my life, I've loved them all. 💕🔥👍🍺😎🔥💥🎉 1965.

1965 - Great year for Mr. Robert Zimmermann, who wrote my top 3 songs. Still only picking Hot 100 songs. 1. Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds. Simply one of the best covers of all time. The Byrds took a pretty decent Dylan track and turned it into something special. Roger McGuinn's 12-string Rickenbacker is majestic. 2. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan. Iconic Dylan song. Al Kooper did pretty well with the organ part considering he showed up to the session expecting to play guitar. 3. Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan. Maybe the first known diss track? Dylan really sticks it to the poseurs in Greenwich Village. You crazy for this one, Bob. 4. Day Tripper - The Beatles. Easily one of the best guitar riffs of all time. And maybe the catchiest song about LSD. 5. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones. This song took some heat in the recent overrated songs video, but I love it. I believe it was the first song to use the newly designed Maestro Fuzz pedal, but Mick's angsty lyrics are pretty sweet too. 6. Ticket To Ride - The Beatles 7. Tell Her No - The Zombies 8. I Can't Explain - The Who 9. Catch the Wind - Donovan 10. Tired of Waiting - The Kinks Going with Jason again on the vote, since "Like a Rolling Stone" was my #2 and almost #1 song. I like both "She Belongs to Me" and "In My Life" too, but both Dylan and the Beatles released better songs in 1965.

It keeps getting better! I love this period in Beatles' music, so I had to clutter this list with them. Shame I couldn't fit The Byrds. Billboard: 1. Ticket To Ride - The Beatles 2. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones 3. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan 4. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag - James Brown 5. Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers Wildcard: 1. In My Life - The Beatles 2. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - The Beatles 3. Resolution - John Coltrane 4. Kiss Me, Baby - The Beach Boys 5. Crying In The Chapel - Elvis Presley

1. Like a Rolling Stone 2. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue 3. Subterranean Homesick Blues 4. Queen Jane Approximately 5. Love Minus Zero/No Limit Let's just be honest with ourselves here people, in 1965 there was no one even close to reaching the level of songwriting that Dylan was at. Now that wouldn't last for much longer, other artists would improve and Dylan's hot streak would come to an end after Blonde on Blonde, but my god what a hot streak it was, and in 65 we are right in the middle of it. Lennon and McCartney with their combined powers couldn't get near him.

Tough year, but I guess they are all going to be going forward. I've been personally challenging myself to stick to one selection per artist so that can make it even more difficult. Hot 100: - James Brown - I Got You (I Feel Good) - The Supremes - Back In My Arms Again - Martha and the Vandellas - Nowhere To Run - The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody Wildcards: - The Byrds - Here Without You - Bob Dylan - Tombstone Blues - Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash - It Ain't Me, Babe - The Beatles - In My Life - Loretta Lynn - Blue Kentucky Girl Worst: "I'm Henry the VII, I Am" by Herman's Hermits. Not sure how a song that is 1:50 manages to feel too long, but this song does it. My #1 is "I've Been Loving You Too Long" by Otis Redding. Love this song and him so much.
@roxannewalsh
@roxannewalsh 3 жыл бұрын
I've Been Loving You Too Long was (one of the) reason why Otis Blue was in my top 5 AOTY 1965. This is why I have not listed him again today, but it is one of his best and that means something.
@roxannewalsh
@roxannewalsh 3 жыл бұрын
For this year - and onward - I have decided to make my own interpretation of songs to list. Bob Dylan released two albums that year and they were my AOTY #1 and #2, the songs would fill my list here and after that a whole lot of other classic hits that everybody knows etc. I am excluding them all and rather pick songs that are kind of stand-alones, like the one song of an artist who otherwise is not too interesting for me or songs/hits where the remaining album is no good. These are all great songs, not obscurities, and I still listen to them today with much pleasure. I have the feeling that it is more fun to unearth those little gems than to state that the Byrds' Dylan interpretation is a great song - nobody doubts that. HM Donovan - Catch the Wind, James Brown - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Yardbirds - Heart Full of Soul, Spencer Davis Group - Keep on Running, Joan Baez - Farewell Angelina 5. Pretty Things - Midnight to Six Man (Pretty Things - named after a Willie Dixon song - came from the same mold as the Stones, in fact the musicians all played together until the line ups separated. They disbanded in 2018!! and singer Phil May died in 2020. On this tune, Nicky Hopkins provides the piano part. The Clash would tip their hat to the song by referencing it in White Man in Hammersmith.) 4. Seeds - Can't Seem to Make You Mine (They were probably really the seeds to what would a decade later become American punk, Sky Saxon and his band were alternative before anyone used the word. They played the bass parts from the keyboard long before Ray Manzarek and even early Frank Zappa acknowledged their influence. The song itself was covered countless times including Alex Chilton, Ramones or Yo La Tengo.) 3. Sir Douglas Quintet - She's About a Mover (Doug Sahm and his keyboarder Augie Meyers kept working together until Sahm's death in 1999, they in a way put Texas and Tex-Mex onto the musical map. Even if not filled with big hits, Sahm's discography is a rich treasure chest for anyone interested in what later was called Americana. They also played sessions with Dylan and Meyers would join Dylan for Time Out of Mind and following.) 2. Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made for Walking (After I had the single it took me about two years of nagging until I got the boots...) 1. Them - Here Comes the Night (I had to flip a coin to decide between this one and Mystic Eyes, angry and young...Van is still around and still angry.)

@@frangarcia7774 In a way they are "evident" for me. As of 1965/1966 the songs are part of my life, not just history from the charts or books. These songs meant - and still mean - something to me. And yes, Dylan wrote the greatest song of the year and that is my history just as well but that is so obvious that it is not even worth mentioning.

Great choice, Jason, on Donovan's "Catch The Wind." Quite possibly my favorite love song ever. Either that one, or "Lover's Concerto" by the Toys. My favorites: 1) It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) - Bob Dylan 2a) Catch The Wind - Donovan 2b) A Lover's Concerto - The Toys 4) Ticket To Ride - The Beatles 5) The Byrds - I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better Some "deeper" tracks: The Who - The Good's Gone The Byrds - Chimes of Freedom The Them - Mystic Eyes The Knickerbockers - Lies Other classics: Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues Bob Dylan - Love Minus Zero (No Limit) Bob Dylan - Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (and Positively 4th Street, and It's All Over Now Baby Blue, and Maggie's Farm, and She Belongs To Me, and...) The Beatles - In My Life The Beatles - Help The Beatles - Nowhere Man The Beatles - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (and Day Tripper, and We Can Work It Out and Norwegian Wood, and...) The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! The Byrds - She Don't Care About Time The Byrds - The Bells of Rhymney The Kinks - Tired of Waiting The Kinks - I Need You The Kinks - Set Me Free The Kinks - Where Have All The Good Times Gone? Oh man I wanted to mention "A Lover's Concerto" but there is so much good stuff from this year. I remember when I was young I thought the melody was amazing (it still is), but I didn't know it was based on a melody by Bach (at least attributed to him, probably written by somebody else.)

Great list, Fran. I left Unchained Melody on the cutting room floor, but, basically an HM for charts. Same with Get Off Of My Cloud - - I will have pleanty of Stones in the subsequent years. Glad you got my song of the year "For Your Love" represented. (Blistering song!) The Yardbirds burned brightly and briefly '65-'66. The Animals also had some great songs this year. I should of added In the Midnight Hour - such a great song. Looking back on the year it was unbelievable that the albums My Generation, Rubber Soul, and Turn! Turn! Turn! were all released the SAME WEEK in December, 1965. I was born too late . .

Good call 👍..I’ve just started a Scott Walker and Walker Brothers “ deep dive” ( My “ artist of the week” to discover, influenced by this channel) . So far really loving it . Scott Walker has an amazing voice , great songs. There’s a brilliant documentary on him ( 30th Century Man) which inspired me..I think Kramz of the Listography 3 , would be the one who might appreciate him the most ( and maybe Jason). Too “arty “ for Joe 😂

@@deathfromabove77 I don't know, man. I'm giving Joe a little bit more arty credit these days after he totally got and appreciated Kate Bush's the dreaming! Possibly the way to Joe's heart is that Scott Walker was reportedly the first person to ever record with a Fender bass. Check out that bass line on "The Old Man's Back Again"! But I know what you mean; The later dark era Scott Walker stuff can be a little too out there for some. For the listography guys, I'd recommend Scott 3 and Scott 4 from his early era as a starting point. Anyone who digs Bowie at least ought to listen to some Scott Walker to put things into perspective. Enjoy the dive! I think I might join you....

I think I'm going to keep it 1 song by artist to avoid too much Dylan. My top from 1965: 1. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a thin man 2. The Supremes - My world is empty without you 3. The Byrds - All I really want to do 4. Otis Redding - I've been loving you too long 5. The Beatles - Girl 6. The Who - My generation 7. Bobby McClure - Peak of love 8. The Shangri-La's - Out in the streets 9. The Rolling Stones - Get off of my cloud 10. The Seeds - Pushin' too hard After 8 episodes of this very cool series, I voted 6 times for Jason's pick and the 2 other times were when both Kramzer and Joe agreed on Ray Charles and the Beach Boys. Also happy birthday to Kramzer!!

Joe is completely correct . In My Life is the best song of the year . It's also my favourite Beatles song , and in my top 10 songs of all time . Joe also scored points by picking Think for Yourself , an overlooked gem by the Beatles . You can't really argue with Jason's pick of Like a Rolling Stone as his favourite . And , speaking of Al Kooper coming into the studio and playing a fabulous organ part , George Martin came into the studio ( while the Beatles were at lunch ) and laid down that nifty piano solo in the middle of In My Life . And while we're on this topic , I'm tired of hearing about the New York DJ , or Billy Preston ( and he's great ) being the so called fifth Beatle . Sorry , it was George Martin who best qualifies for that title . I digress . My list : In My Life by the Beatles Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan It's My Life by the Animals Think for Yourself by the Beatles In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett Rescue Me by Fontella Bass It's the Same Old Song by the Four Tops My World is Empty Without You by the Supremes The Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel Ryan , thanks for reminding me how good She Belongs to Me is . Cheers

I know last year was mentioned as being the year of the Bs, but I think this one took it another level. Had to cut out a few other close calls too! Productions are sounding even fuller now. Genre-wise, the theme I'm seeing is peak 60s folk rock. We've reached the year you guys picked the Albums lists, so it's fitting for the first time non-Billboard songs make up more than 5. Billboard Songs 1. WINNER: *Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan #2* (An enduring folk rock classic. Underrated with Dylan is just how much a joy the arrangements are at this point.) 2. *The Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel #1* (I love the original recording too, but I think the electric overdubs just take it to another level.) 3. *Yesterday by The Beatles #1* (Most covered song for a reason. One of McCartney's great melodies.) 4. *California Dreamin' by The Mamas & the Papas #4* (Listened to it again and it really holds up as another huge folk rock entry for the year.) 5. *We Can Work It Out by The Beatles #1* (Might be the first of theirs that just feels pure pop rock. The harmonium gives it that little extra something.) Wildcard Songs 1. *Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) by The Beatles* (Top-class Beatles folk with a dash of early psychedelia.) 2. *Ballad of a Thin Man by Bob Dylan* (Another awesome Highway 61 track that just sounds so good with Bob's storytelling.) 3. *Kiss Me, Baby by The Beach Boys* (I love the side two ballads on Today. This one puts me most in the Pet Sounds headspace. It's just so lush, and I love the vocal tradeoffs in that prechorus section.) 4. *Sinnerman by Nina Simone* (A vocal jazz epic completely unlike the rest of the songs here.) 5. *Michelle by The Beatles* (Pretty sure this is another one up there among the most performed. Thankfully I haven't been overexposed. Adore those lilting background harmonies.) Top 10 Honourable Mention: Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues by Bob Dylan WORST: Don't Think Twice by The Wonder Who? #20 (The Four Seasons, under an assumed name, doing a completely joke novelty cover of the Dylan song. I might have enjoyed a pop take on the song, but Frankie Valli basically emulating the chipmunk voice without the tapespeed is not the answer. Listen if you dare!)

Not doing the Billboard/non-Billboard thing, just a top ten: 1) The Byrds - "Turn! Turn! Turn!" - the finest distillation of their original sound. 2) The Beatles - "In My Life" - One of their very best songs. 3) The Ronettes - "Born to Be Together" - Over the top romantic - all of the feelings of of being completely slain by someone hormonally distilled into a three minute masterpiece. 4) The Beach Boys - "Please Let Me Wonder" - Already waxed eloquent on this in my Beach Boys list. 5) The Rolling Stones - "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" - Yeah, the fuzz riff is great, but the best thing about this song is the chorus. "I can't... GET no!" One of the ten best vocal hooks of all time. I was absolutely intoxicated by it from single-digit years onward. Catchy as hell. And no one ever points it out. 6) Simon & Garfunkel - "The Sound of Silence" - Tom Wilson was a genius. A great song to begin with, and then he did... that. 7) The Righteous Brothers - "Just Once in My Life" - The second example in this year of how Phil was at the absolute top of his game in early '65. Bill sure knew the way into a gal's... heart. 8) The Byrds - "The Bells of Rhymney" - Beats out the epochal title track for the best song on their debut. Incredible 12-string work, dazzling harmonies. All is forgiven, Dave. 9) The Byrds - "Mr. Tambourine Man" 10) The Beatles - "Ticket to Ride" I could list a ton of honorable mentions. If a Dylan song would have made it, it would have been the majestic "Queen Jane Approximately." Love that thing.

There's another version of "Catch the Wind" from the initial pressing of his greatest hits album which is like a full band version with Big Jim Sullivan on guitar. It's on KZbin as "Catch The Wind (Mellow Version)". I think there was a contractual dispute when he released his greatest hits album, so he re-recorded that and "Colours". The newer releases and digital versions went back to the original folky version, but I always dug the other version.

1965, may be my favorite year of music, it’s my favorite year for both Dylan and the Beatles. Yet neither of these take my song of the year. A monster year really, an amazing amount of great songs couldn’t get into this top 10. “Desolation Row” “Day Tripper” and even mighty songs “Like A Rolling Stone” (which I love) nor “Satisfaction” (a song which is “fine”) got left out. This will be the first year, I will separate out singles and album tracks. *Singles* *1. Get off of my Cloud - Rolling Stones* - Song of the Year. The sequel that’s better than the original. This record sounds like shit, I can’t deny that, but what is here is amazing to me. First off the drums, Charlie’s drumming in this is my favorite drumming of all time. I can’t quite grasp, what he’s doing and I can’t think of any other song that quite sounds like that. There’s also that great call and response chorus. My #3 song of all time. Also in 2005, I saw the Stones in concert and had amazing seats, that when they came to the b-stage in the middle of the crowd, I was front and center of the stage with nothing between me and the Stones. One of the songs they played was this one, and I felt like I was getting my own personal Stones show, one of the top 5 moments of my life. *2. Help! - The Beatles* - a timeless piece of pop/rock mastery. To me just sounds like one of those songs that could come out today and be a hit. *3. I fought the Law - Bobby Fuller Four* - in a vacuum I probably prefer the Clash version, but I think without this version there is no Clash version. Bobby Fuller’s is a cover too, but has grit the original doesn’t have. *4. Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan* - I still love it, but I used to love it more. Probably a little too spiteful for my taste, nowadays, but somehow less vitriolic than “She’s Your Lover Now” Still there’s plenty of magic here. Always sounded more like a Blonde on Blonde song than Highway 61 (the sessions it was recorded). *5. Wooly Bully - Sam the Sham and Pharaohs*- Kram is so wrong...this song is great. Dumb but magical garage rock. *Non-Singles* *1. Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan* - The first time I ever heard this version, I had picked up Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits from a Salvation Army in the mid 90s. I had a real cheap turntable and bought a lot of cheap records that way. I knew of Dylan and his greatness, but actually listening to Dylan was practically zero. I put on the first side, expecting greatness and the first song is “Rainy Day Women” and I think “What the f*ck is this? This is awful.” I decide to stop and flip to side two which the lead track is “Mr. Tambourine Man” of which I know the Byrds version. I listen for a minute, unimpressed, and think “I’ll stick to the Byrds version” Oh how wrong I was. Now when I hear the Byrds version, I think, “This would be so much better, if it had all the wonderful verses” *2. In My Life - The Beatles* - the first “mature” Beatles record (though I think “Girl” also from Rubber Soul, with it’s Christian metaphors is also pretty mature). Lovely music, fantastic lyrics with just a bit of melancholy. A masterpiece. *3. I’m Looking Through You - The Beatles* - In my opinion the most underrated Beatles track. I never see it get much love. Great lyrics with a lovely Paul vocal, even the opening acoustic intro is great. *4. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues - Bob Dylan* - What is this song about? I have no idea, and I don’t care. I think it has something to do with being in Mexico, but the lyrics make no sense. Yet these are some of my favorite Dylan lyrics. Just certain lines just really jump out at you. My favorite: “If you’re looking to get silly you better go back to from where you came/because the cops don’t need you and man they expect the same” *5. Catch the Wind - Donovan* - I originally had this on the singles list, but thanks Jason, I never realized, I’ve been listening to the album version all these years. Somewhat fairly maligned as a Dylan rip-off, he is also can be the antithesis of Dylan by making “beautiful” songs rather than Dylan’s “darker” material. There’s also that infamous scene of Dylan and Donovan in “Don’t Look Back” which I’ve always thought was a whole lot of nothing. *Worst song of the year* I’ve got one. I’m going with a Kramzer ear worm special: #3 hit *The Name Game by Shirley Lewis.* The Jolly Green Giant is pretty terrible. Freddie and the Dreamers “I’m Telling you now” is awful is as well but to get the full effect watch them on Shindig kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJTOmoxuZqycb6c. Worst choreography ever. Thanks for another great video, guys. And thanks for anybody who has read this far. I don’t mean to type so much, but I just get started and bam I’ve typed a 1000 words. :)

Love all the praise for Bob Dylan throughout the video! Get over it Joe... doubting your taste now. Dylan rules! Need that new Dylan special. Like a Rolling Stone is the clear winner. I was only surprised that no one mentioned my other favourite by Dylan in ‘65, , “It’s all Over Now, Baby Blue”...the song he stayed Donovan with in “Don’t Look Back”....

Love the Jackson C Frank shout out! Blues Run The Game was also covered by Bert Jansch, whose debut album also came out in 1965. A must for guitar fans, as are other 1965 releases by John Fahey and Robbie Basho. Can't argue with any choices. My favorite Beatles tune from 1965 is You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, which is oozing Dylan's influence. But I'm going to ignore the charts all together, though I'm sure there is some Billboard overlap. 1.Needle Of Death-Bert Jansch. Jansch was an influence on Neil Young and Young had Jansch open for him for a tour. 2.A Well Respected Man-The Kinks. 3.My Generation-The Who. 4.Strychnine-The Sonics. The roots of punk taking hold and will grow stronger in 66. 5.Pushin' Too Hard-The Seeds. Ibid. 6. We Gotta Get Out Of This Place-The Animals. 7.Heart Full Of Soul-The Yardbirds. 8.She Don't Care About Time-The Byrds. 9.She's About A Mover-Sir Douglas Quintet. 10.People Get Ready-The Impressions. Actually, it looks like there is a lot of Billboard overlap.

The Last Time has a great sound, same with Get off my Cloud. 1 My fav is Tell Her No by the Zombies 2 Last Laugh by Beau Brummels 3 Don't forget the Yardbirds with Heart Full of Soul 4 Smokestack Lightening - the definitive version. Let's face the composers in the 30s and 40s were doing great stuff for their time and helped contribute greatly to rock but British bands like the Yardbirds, Them, etc. lifted those songs from good to great. 5 Baby I'm Yours - Barbara Lewis Honorable Mention: I'll be Doggone - Marvin Gaye, Donovan Catch the Wind. Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter - I see where they seem sappy second rate but Listen People (later) is a great song as well. I am leaving out the Beatles and Dylan and Beach Boys and Instrumentals.

1965 was a fabulous year for The Beatles - Rubber Soul would definitely have been my choice for Album of the Year if I had been following your previous series from the beginning. However, even they couldn’t quite match the brilliance of Bob Dylan, who released not just the song of the year but unquestionably one of the greatest singles of all time: Billboard Top 100: Help! - The Beatles Yesterday - The Beatles Do You Believe In Magic - The Lovin’ Spoonful Help Me, Rhonda - The Beach Boys Wildcards: In My Life - The Beatles California Dreamin’ - The Mamas & The Papas My Generation - The Who We Gotta Get Out Of This Place - The Animals The Sound Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel Worst song: I’m Henry VIII, I Am - Herman’s Hermits (I agree with Joe, they were definitely among the weakest of the British Invasion bands. This song was particularly bad - it was a daft music hall number that they should have steered well clear of!) Song of the Year: Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (Jason is right on this occasion. This was a landmark release in music history - the moment when Dylan became a true rock star)
