This is a great way to close out the first Dylan decade. I am still loving the series, even when we diverge on opinion. I feel Joe may be getting some Bob fatigue. It can be hard swallowing the 60s run of albums. They don't give you much of a chance to come up for air. The 70s should give plenty of opportunity to see Bob's feet of clay and maybe appreciate the achievements of the 60s even more. For what it is worth, when Bob sold his music catalogue a couple of years ago it was reported he had written 600+ songs. @@dylanseveymusic The Bootleg Series material is the only part of this series with Joe that I struggle with. I understand the original mission statement of this series/project was to focus on the studio albums. But there are so many fantastic songs that are not on those official studio albums, and it feels like that piece of the puzzle is missing from this series. Joe would short circuit if he had to listen to all of that additional material, and it would drag out what is already going to be (hopefully) a lengthy series. But maybe we could squeeze in one more 60s themed episode where you share a list of essential non-album tracks from that decade. Joe could then have a focused and concise starting point for that material without having to take the time to dive in blindly on his own. He needs a Bootleg Series Sherpa. Be that Bootleg Series Sherpa. For him. For us. In all seriousness, I think that would make for a great episode, and it would put a proper bow on the 60s before moving on the 70s…my personal favorite Dylan decade.
@dylanseveymusic9 ай бұрын
@@aronpolasek4506The importance and brilliance of the Bootleg Series isn’t lost on me one bit. As this show continues and develops, there will be room to explore and discuss non-album material. Like you said, I can’t, in good conscience, force it all at once on Joe because I do care about his mental well-being, but I promise it won’t be totally absent from the discussion.

Love the inclusion of “One More Night”. A fantastic little song. Great non-album picks too, I’ll be having plenty of them in the upcoming decades. “All You Have to Do Is Dream” is probably my favorite from the Basement Tapes Bootleg Series, but “Sign on the Cross” is way up there too. “Walls of Red Wing” another solid choice, so many great songs initially from those Freewheelin’ sessions. “Quit Your Low Down Ways” another one of my favorites.

There’s so much top tier stuff from Bob from the era and almost all mentioned here. Can only really add a few deep cuts I think are worth checking out. Ballad of Hollis Brown (remember hearing this for the first time not long after becoming a husband and father and it really sent a chill up my back). Talkin bear mountain picnic massacre blues. (Dry, witty, sarcastic, hilarious) Moonshiner (a low key and sad confession of an alcoholic. One of his best vocals of the early years). I’ll keep it with mine (the shimmering organ puts me in the backstreets of some beachfront town like Venice, LA as the afternoon sun turns to evening- similar vibe to Goin to Acapulco).

Great lists, guys, with caveats. Leaving Chimes of Freedom off seems criminal to me. It's one of his most brilliant songs -- at once a farewell to innocence and a hymn to it. Heartbreaking and stunning - Whitmanesque, the original version of Song of Myself. I do love Spanish Harlem Incident and I Don't Believe You, by the way. Totally agree about Visions of Johanna -- monumental. But John Wesley Harding? It's another masterpiece, guys!!! Not perfect, but incredible -- All Along the Watchtower? I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine -- "I dreamed I saw St Augustine alive with fiery breath, and I dreamed I was amongst the ones who put him out to death". Using the tune of Joe Hill is a brilliant statement all by itself. And I Pity The Poor Immigrant "who passionately hates his life, and likewise fears his death". I love Joe's choice of Too Much of Nothing -- a great underrated song. Also love Dylan's choice of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues; one of my all-time favorites. And It's All Over Now, Baby Blue -- I'm sure you've heard the live recordings from the '66 tour; just otherworldly. But what about I Shall Be Released? And where in god's name is Desolation Row??? Anyway, here's mine: 20 It Ain't Me, Babe 19 Girl From The North Country 18 Masters of War 17 Just Like a Woman 16 Lay Down Your Weary Tune 15 To Ramona 14 I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine 13 Subterranean Homesick Blues 12 I Shall Be Released` 11 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues 10 All Along The Watchtower 9 It's All Over Now, Baby Blue 8 Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again 7 Mr Tambourine Man 6 Chimes of Freedom 5 A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall 4 Desolation Row 3 It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) 2 Like A Rollin' Stone 1 Visions of Johnna

I hope one day this sees an official release or at least someone can use that technology that was used to remix Revolver to properly remaster Dylan’s Can’t Leave Her Behind. One of his most tender and melodic pieces of music. I’m curious if Joe has ever heard it?

@kenkaplan36549 ай бұрын
I think your lists demonstrate, especially with Dylan, how subjective these things are. A song that might be 20 in one list is 4-6 on another. Dylan Sevey seems to have a strong romantic streak so songs like "To Ramona", "Boots of Spanish Leather", and "I Don't Believe You" which are romantic relationship songs could show up but usually are not on most top 20 lists of this period. I can really see how "I Don't Believe You" could really stay with someone who has experienced that. Sevey's top 3 are I think just right. I also think Visions of Johanna is his greatest achievement and "it's All Right Ma" is his greatest strictly lyrical achievement. Joe hews more to the musical side as is his proclivity but I think it is a good list and I agree "I threw it All Away" is an incredibly powerful song and the one song I would revisit on Skyline, although "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" is a wonderful song. "You're a Big Girl Now" for me, an amazing song on Blood on the Tracks seems to be almost a companion song to "Threw it All Away". I also like "Too Much of Nothing" So if the lists are combined, you get a good representative sample. "Mobile Blues", "Tambourine Man" etc for Dylan, more musical Blonde on Blonde and Skyline from Joe but still appreciative of some really lyrically strong songs. Sweet Marie would make my top 20. I'm not going to quibble about the orders. For me, two great misses? "All Along the Watchtower" and "Desolation Row". Both on my top 10, DR is #4 or #2 depending on my mood. .Not on either list.

A few running thoughts while listening. Always happy to hear a shout out to William Blake. Countless people claim being inspired by Blake, but only Dylan deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as him.... Hattie Carrol is one song that puts him into that eternal category. In case anyone hasn't heard Ministry's cover of Lay Lady Lay, it's better than the original! Nina Simone's version of Tom Thumb's Blues draws out a kindness and sensitivity that Dylan conceals -- And you're so kind and careful not to go to her too soon... Can't argue with any of those of course, but -- no Hollis Brown, Only a Pawn, Tombstone Blues etc etc etc etc.... God says to Abraham kill me a son/ Abe say man you must be puttin me on...

Another Side sucks not just because the songwriting seems to have dried up a bit, but because of the production. It doesn't have the warmth of Freewheelin' or Times.. and his voice is super nasally and annoying throughout. I think some important eq adjustments are needed to make his voice palatable, which they'd nailed by the time of ...Back Home. Although it might just be his technique, since it was recorded on a single drunken night, and his voice is equally unlistenable on the 1964 Bootleg Series Philharmonic show.
