@@roxannewalsh Once again, I am filled with indignance and disgust at Jason’s 2-star rating for Ege Bamyasi. Love these guys, but they obviously can’t be trusted to evaluate anything Krautrock nor distinguish its greatness from their hind end or a hole in the ground.
@drdavid19632 жыл бұрын
@@scottanthonyweidner8692 Yes, they definitely have blind spots. Their almost blind loyalty to hair metal and prog and hard rock is perhaps very American-centric. After the 70s all of that music was irrelevant in the UK. Hair metal, hard rock and prog were all a joke in the face of new wave. Of course there were exceptions but only artists who could progress or evolve were of any interest, not churning out the same stuff for 10 years. For me, choosing the likes of Todd Rundgren, Black Sabbath, Genesis, REO Speedwagon, Kiss is ridiculous and a whole host of British/Australian and American indie bands or new bands from the 80s are completely overlooked. Still, they are endearing personalities and there is at least a fair range of opinion which makes for some interesting debates. There's also a lot of respect for the pop/rock canon which is admirable.

Since Kramzer has pointed out the significance of Live albums in 1972, this may be a good point to post my top 10 choices of that year: 10. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Pictures at an Exhibition 4,0 (The only ELP album except their debut that stood the test of time - maybe related to the fact that the band did not write it...) 9. Grateful Dead - Europe '72 4,0 8. Mtume Umoja Ensemble - Alkebu-Lan: Land of the Blacks - Live at the East 4,0 (This was Mtume fresh out of Miles Davis' band, not the silly disco/funk of later years.) 7. The Band - Rock of Ages 4,0 (I do not care for their tired drunken all-star album set, for me this is their live album to have.) 6. Weather Report - Live in Tokyo 4,5 (For many decades this was a Japan-only release but is now available on CD worldwide.) 5. Slade - Slade Alive! 4,5 (Raise your hands, stomp your feet - get down and get with it.) 4. Alan Stivell - À l'Olympia 4,5 (The cover art of the CD version is horrible - Rick Wakeman gets jealous. It is as misleading as world music or celtic rock or other labels attached to this music. Dan Ar Braz rivals Martin Barre in Jethro Tull and Pascal Stive's organ challenges Jon Lord. Asking someone in French Bretagne about Stivell or Braz is like asking about Willie Nelson in Texas. 1975's E Dulenn (At Dublin) is even better.) 3. J. Geils Band - Full House 4,5 (One of the shortest live albums of the time but all killer, no filler - packed fair and square.) 2. Deep Purple - Made in Japan 4,5 (My father brought me the Japan double LP from a trip to Tokyo in the week of release and I played it to death all through the 70s.) 1. Rory Gallagher - Live! in Europe 5,0 (I was messin' with the kid down at the laundromat until I had the bullfrog blues.)

@@johnmavroudis2054 It did not even stand the test of 1973 - the cover art was great and some 5 minutes of music. Carnival 9 was the indication that by the end of 1973 the whole symphonic prog thing had steered itself into a dead end (did it ever come out again?). It was the album the prog haters needed to trash the whole genre and you cannot even prove them wrong.
@johnmavroudis20542 жыл бұрын
@@roxannewalsh Nah... It's a pretty excellent album. Not very "symphonic, either. Elements of jazz piano that still sound good today. Everything ELP after that? Pretty meh-bad. There's an entire dumpload of prog that's horrific. 1973 featured "Selling England By the Pound" and that was a masterwork. A brilliant album by any standard. "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" was freaking brilliant. There were epic albums by Pink Floyd, Camel, Marillion... and a few others... but there was also absolute trash like Asia, as well. Lumping everything into one generalized statement doesn't cut it. There was great punk and shit punk. There's great and shit in every category of music.

Van Der Graaf; Vital. The Stranglers; Live X Cert. Spacemen 3; Performance(do you like them at all?). Iggy Pop; TV Eye 1977 Live. Iggy And The Stooges; Metallic KO. The last one should be handled with caution, it's a fairly rough recording of their last ever gig in front of a clearly hostile crowd. You can hear glass shattering and Iggy's banter is awesome. The only one in my own top 10 that didn’t make Kramzer’s list at all was Foxtrot, so can’t complain too much about that.

Nice to see some appreciation for Honkey Chateau, which typically gets overshadowed by Yellow Brick Road when it comes to Elton albums. Nice to also see Exile here, as well as Eat a Peach. I´ve noticed neither list has had Paul Simon´s self titled, which I think is a major musical highlight of 1972, but to each their own. I´ve come to the conclusion that I like his solo material better than Simon and Garfunkel.

Considering all of the "best rock drummer" claims through the decades, like Kramzer, I'm chiming in for Mitch Mitchell, who didn't feel a need to toot his own horn, but always played with skill and imagination.
@roxannewalsh2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure about Mitchell as a drummer because nothing he did without Hendrix is great BUT with Hendrix it was the perfect symbiosis. One could only guess how far (or not) the Experience would have come without Mitchell. He was the ideal foil for Hendrix and the only one able to follow him when the master went off into the stratosphere - especially live.
@syater2 жыл бұрын
@@roxannewalsh Good point. I didn't follow Mitchell after Hendrix was gone, so you know better than I. Whether or not his drumming was essential to the Experience I can't really say, but I know focusing on the interplay between Mitchell and Hendrix is often very rewarding. He had a kind of loose precision, if that makes any sense, and I assume we can agree that the ability to play in perfect symbiosis with Hendrix wasn't a such bad thing to have in his quiver of skills.

@roxannewalsh2 жыл бұрын
Just a remark...The 1972 Return to Forever was actually a Chick Corea album with the name that he later adopted by his fusion band with Al Di Meola etc. The 1972 album as well as 1973's Light As a Feather had a different band with Corea, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and Joe Farrell - only Stanley Clarke was already there. Those albums are very good early fusion before all the funk/faster+faster notes took over.
@nielshoogev12 жыл бұрын
@@roxannewalsh I have a hard time actually comparing and ranking these albums. What makes Foxtrot by Genesis better or worse than the debut album of Millie Jackson? I love both and they are so different that I wouldn't be able to rank one above the other. Unlike most people in the comment section, I am not capable of giving out stars with a grain of half a star. It's easier when ranking the albums of one artist, but is four stars for Neil Young really the same as four stars for Earth, Wind and Fire? And what does that even mean? Suppose I would have to choose 25 albums from 1972 to take to the proverbial desert island, I wouldn't bring all the prog albums that I love from that year, because that would easily fill a quarter to a half of the capacity. I would want to have some jazz-fusion from that era, I would want some soul, some avant-garde, some mainstream pop, some hard rock, some R&B. That diversity would make life on the island much more bearable. No matter how good Ziggy Stardust, it's not something I would want to hear every day. Some days, I want to hear the voice of Karen Carpenter instead, or that of Robert Wyatt. In that sense, I tend to see these lists more as my favorite collection. That also makes more sense to me, given my difficulty to rank stuff.

Elton John's Honky Chateau is a slide for Elton John from which he will almost never recover as he dives into over-commercialism, over-indulgence and singing in a higher vocal range. I prefer the deeper voice Elton. Elton John, Tumbleweed (with 5 good songs) and Madman and Don't Shoot are better albums. 1- 10 ranking of an album I never heard but 3 songs from: Honky Cat - 4 Mellow - 3 I think I'm Going to Kill Myself - 2 Susie - 2 Rocket Man - 10 Salvation - 3 Amy - 4 Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters - 10 Hercules - 7 Rod Stewart's Never a Dull Moment. Was this mentioned in any TLM list so far? It seems like a top 15 and I like it better than Honky Chateau which sounds like a live album, so I understand Kramz liking it from that perspective. Here is my second heap of deep selections from 1972, still mostly 4,5 star territory. Gaps are due to "usual suspects" that I skipped here. # 32 Out of Focus - Four Letter Monday Afternoon 4,5 (Krautrock at its very best, this is the third and last original album of the Munich band and their best, one of those double albums that really deserved the format - not that their other albums are very far behind. Their jams of guitar, organ, flute/sax interplay never get boring, their ideas have been copied since 50 years for good reasons.) # 33 Bob Weir - Ace 4,5 (No Grateful Dead Listography yet - but this solo album with all the GD on board may be the best of that band. Some songs made it into their repertoire for years.) # 34 Volker Kriegel - Inside:Missing Link 4,5 (European fusion of the early 70s has its very own language and is very different from the "Miles Davis school". The unique German guitarist - in a league with Jan Akkerman and John McLaughlin - assembled some of the best players of the scene for this album and unfolds the whole spectrum of possibilities outside of funk noodling.) # 35 Captain Beyond - ST 4,5 (I was reluctant to include this album as it is probably the best known "unknown album" of 1972, but here it is - it is simply too good to be skipped. Four "outcasts" from their original bands join forces to reach a creative peak they never achieved in their former bands.) # 36 Cluster - Cluster II 4,5 (Most people know this band and album primarily for its influence on many genres to follow. However, just like the early Tangerine Dream albums, Cluster II creates an atmosphere and universe of its own that no subsequent disciple could recreate - not even Moebius and Roedelius themselves.) # 38 Xhol (Caravan) - Motherfucker GMBH & Co KG 4,5 (One needs to consult the original cover art to get an idea of this music...a large handwritten note saying "2 Years Old" and the Caravan in the band name scratched out to avoid confusion with the Canterbury band. In fact, this was the late release studio LP that was planned as a double album of which the live part had been released in 1971 as Hau Ruck. By the time of release, the music contained here was already widely known from the band's many Festival appearances over the year - it was part of the nucleus of krautrock as such and had already made its impact as bootleg long before the official release. Aside from the historic aspect, this is krautrock as fresh and inspiring as it was 50 years ago.) # 39 John Surman - Westering Home 4,5 (I knew Surman from his 1969 appearance on the fantastic Extrapolation album by John McLaughlin. The saxophone genius and composer was never shy to venture into new territory. A true solo album with Surman on saxophones, keyboards and percussion in intense conversation with himself and nature. Those who liked 2021's Floating Point/Sanders collaboration will love this album and recognise where those later ideas come from.) # 41 Guru Guru - Kanguru 4,5 (Their third album and the last of the original psychedelic trio - the band itself would continue way into the 21st century. The German Jimi Hendrix Experience with a large dose of strange humour. Just like Mitch Mitchell, drummer Mani Neumeier - band leader and only constant member through the decades - came from jazz while bassist Uli Trepte was more Billy Cox than Noel Redding and Ax Genrich knew every trick of Hendrix and then some more.) # 42 Kraan - Kraan 4,0 (Another krautrock legend with a style all their own. Heavy funky bass guitar, a heavily amplified saxophone, a drummer who seemed to have as many arms as the whole Santana army, and a guitarist with as many melodies and riffs as you can imagine. Arabia in the Black Forest.) # 43 Birtha - Birtha 4,0 (Years before the Runaways there were all female rock bands. While Fanny went into a pop/rock direction, this L.A. band went into hard rock and nails it with their debut. They made a second album in 1973 that was very weak and then disbanded. Here is their one moment of glory.)
