Kids, right? Actually, Mardi Gras is the worst album, but it has good Fogerty songs, a second vocalist (Doug Clifford) who is limited but enjoyable, and suitably punchy production throughout. I can see someone not liking the debut as much because there's nothing there as accessible/enjoyable as "Sweet Hitchhiker" or "Someday Never Comes." "Suzie Q" is awesome, but it definitely helps to be able to remember the decade that spawned it.
@williamlangan59023 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I cannot see how (spoiler alert) Mardi Gras is better than their debut (he has a good point that they were finding their feet) or Bayou Country. I think Stu and Cosmo were ok on vocals but I think Fogerty would've sounded better where they are singing. Here's my list. 7. Mardi Gras- Like Bayou Country or not, a lot more care went into that album than this one. And the jams on CCR's debut are better than the songs here. 6. Pendulum- Cosmo's Factory was so big and great, it was hard to follow. I think John Fogerty knew that and wanted a change of pace. Unfortunately, there's a little too much change. 5. Credence (debut)- The band is finding their feet here. Suzie Q is interesting. I like Working Man, probably my favorite here. I think it and Porterville should've been singles as well. Bayou Country- Keep On Choogling is interesting but a little too long. How anyone could dislike Proud Mary is beyond me. Born On The Bayou captures their style perfectly. Graveyard Train has an interesting premise but could've been shorter. 3. Green River- The only thing wrong with this album is it's too short. Bad Moon Rising, Green River, Commotion and Lodi are must listens to. I Wrote A Song For Everyone is a classic poem. Night Time is interesting but the weakest song. 2. Cosmo's Factory- This album has a little bit of everything. There's psychedelia and jamming on Ramble Ramble. Ooby Dooby is an old Roy Orbison song, reminding us of the band's "early years of rock" roots. I Heard It Through The Grapevine gets a little repetitive but their version is still fun. Looking Our My Back Door, Run Through The Jungle (a great protest song with a heavy sound), Travelling Band (one of the great rock anthems) and Who'll Stop The Rain (a mellow protest song) are must listens to. Long As I Can See The Light is a stellar song. I love the sax. 1. Willie And The Poor Boys- Fortunate Son is a great protest song that gives you everything. Down On The Corner is a fun song which you can picture as a parade in Louisiana. Effigy is an underrated gem, ominous and gloomy. It Came Out Of The Sky is rocking with sci-fi style lyrics.

While watching this I realized CCR is the first real rock band I can remember hearing and enjoying. I was about eight years old and CCR was all over radio in small town northern BC. On a side note, for some reason CCR was designated the best band of all time by every First Nations kid I encountered throughout my younger years. CCR was also extremely popular in every bar I frequented in my late teens and early 20s. CCR and beer go hand in hand in my mind. CCR sit just outside my all time favourite bands list, mainly because I don't think about them that much, still, whenever I put on any of my top five CCR albums (especially the top three) I'm smiling from start to finish. 1. Cosmo's Factory 2. Willy and the Poor Boys 3. Green River 4. Bayou Country 5. Creedence Clearwater Revival 6. Pendulum 7. Mardi Gras

You guys are hitting some home runs lately with the choices of bands you’re featuring! CCR was my favorite band in high school. I own every one of these albums and have listened to them all scores of times and at one point had every note committed to memory. But that was 30 years ago and I have only listened to them occasionally in the last 20 years. I think Fogerty is a great rock and country singer and his talents as a songwriter and guitarist are under rated. Even back then I never had a formal ordering of how I ranked the albums. I think CCR is more of a “song” band than an album band. Most of their albums do not have a theme or a consistent sound throughout. Every one of these albums has some great songs on it and some lesser ones. I love their rendition of “Grapevine”, better than the original. I never think of it as too long. It’s probably the shortest song over 10 minutes put on a record. It never seems to take 10 minutes. I enjoy the jamming on this track, and I’m generally not a fan of jamming. CCR’s signature sound could best be described as “swampy”. Of note, some of their albums have really lousy SOUND. They are flat and muddy. Bayou Country thru Cosmos are the worst for sound. Some time, you should also do Fogerty’s solo catalog, there is a lot of great stuff to be had there too. His singing voice has sounded better in the last 20 years than it did in the CCR years. With all that, this would be my ranking today: 1. Green River (most consistent album of the CCR signature sound, one of the best covers shots) 2. Willy and the Poor Boys (strong track list) 3. Cosmos Factory (more varied sound, longest album, funky cover) 4. Bayou Country (probably the second most classic CCR sounding album after Green river. Graveyard train is dirge but I don’t hate it. Keep on Chooglin’ is weak and too long) 5. Mardi Gras (never as bad as they make it out to be. Clifford is decent singer. Cook doesn’t have a great voice but they both pull it off. I like the countryfied sound. I’ve always had a challenge ranking this album as it’s so different than the others) 6. Pendulum (very varied in sounds, some of the keyboard let songs sound kind of “creepy” to me. Like Hideway and its just a thought. “Rude awakening #2” is bizarre and possibly their worst track. Has the best cover though with a beautiful portrait of the band) 7. Self Titled (hadn’t quite got their “sound” down yet. Some good songs but some weaker ones. Too much jamming)

Great episode. Really enjoyed bc I have been obsessed with CCR lately. I am just consistently in awe of what John Fogerty created, in the first 5 albums especially. (i like but don't love Pendulum & MG)... he created "swampy gumbo bayou blues country jammy rock" and he was from a bland No. Cal. suburb. It's just mind-choogling. I can listen to all first five albums and find genius and glory across them all, almost every single track. W&TPB and GR my 2 absolute favorites. "Lodi" one of the greatest rock'n'roll songs ever.

1. Willie & the Poor Boys 2. Cosmo's Factory 3. Green River 4. Bayou Country 5. Pendulum 6. CCR (s/t) 7. Mardi Gras CCR are a solid candidate for "Band of the Year" in '69. They released 3 excellent albums in that calendar year. It's difficult to rank their albums because the "middle 5" (sans the debut & Mardi Gras) are all pretty great. They were the "Sandy Koufax" of rock bands- they weren't around for very long but they had an incredibly high "hit rate" for classic songs.

@TheAnarchitek28 күн бұрын
I wrote this some time ago, because Creedence was one of my favorite bands, '69-'70: Creedence Clearwater Revival was a singles band, with a very successful track record in a very short time. They hit the Top 40 with Suzie Q, a reworking of the Dale Hawkins song from 1957, which had featured a pre-Elvis James Burton (he would later work with Ricky Nelson and Gram Parsons, among many others). The Rolling Stones would take a crack at the song, on 12 x 5, as did artists as varied as Bobby McFerrin and Johnny Winter. Creedence, though, had a Top 20 hit with the song in 1968, reaching #11, the highest-charting position Suzie Q would see. The first album is a good record, is not as exciting as their some of their later work, still packed with good rock 'n' roll in their emerging style. That style would reach full flower with Bayou Country, earning them the sobriquet of "Swamp Rockers". The third album is a singles album, with the Bad Moon Rising/ Lodi single, just coming off the charts, and Green River/Commotion just starting up them. The rest of the album loosely ties everything together with "swamp rock" songs with Fogerty's best gravelly growl. By the fifth album, CCR was the biggest act in the world, selling out shows everywhere they went. These were tight, well-run productions, the band belting out the hits "just like the record", with little variation, and no extemporaneous playing. No soloes, guitar or drum, no flash, just hard-driving rock 'n' roll the way it was recorded. No one complained, but the band was struggling internally, and the sixth album would be the end of the road, the other members of the group demanding John Fogerty "let" then write songs and share in the royalties. Mardi Gras was the result, and their only songs worth listening to are the two Fogerty compositions, and the remake of Hello, Mary Lou remake he sings. The rest is mostly unlistenable. The band would disintegrate in the aftermath, its legendary run over, except for endless repackaging. John Fogerty would go on to a longer solo career, writing many more songs that connected with listeners, the way those Creedence songs had. The live album, originally titled "At the Royal Albert Hall", was recorded at the band's height, captures their precision, in the rapid-fire recitation of 13 well-known songs, in 49 minutes, 25 seconds. Cohesive and swampy with perfect cover art. The longer tracks can be a bit tedious, but... the vibe of it all is almost perfect. It comes in 3rd only because Cosmo has so many dang classics. And Grapevine. Don't forget Grapevine. 4. Creedence Clearwater Revival. ++++ What a debut! And such a great autumnal feel. Porterville is huge favorite. Relax and enjoy Susie Q. 5. Pendulum. ++++ CCR STAX'ing it up. This is their "reaching" album and it is so sadly underrated. Love pretty much evertything on it. 6. Willy And The Poor Boys. +++1/2. No doubt they were feeling the burden of 3 albums in 12 months, but my goodness how many good tracks are on here!? 7. Mardis Gras. +++ Sure it's easy to pick on the non-Fogerty sung vocals, but it's actually a pretty good album. He may be too old now, but if John Fogerty would re-record the lead vocals on those 6 tracks, many would see how good this album actually was. As it sits... sure, it's flawed.

Review of Reviewers JOE-***** Spot on brother! You know what's good. Only a couple of quibbles. Cosmo's is a clear #1. Kramzer-**1/2 At least you made me laugh and had a contender at #1 but that Mardi Gras rating???? Rough! Jason-* Did you listen while doing the dishes? I like Pendulum but #1?????? I have to say I love "Grapevine". All versions but especially this one. I know some curmudgeons have an issue with the length but not me. I have heard it a thousand times and the guitar solos never bore me(simple but intense). His vocals when he goes into a falsetto on the word guy is awesome. But the best parts is Clifford's drumming. His use of the cymbals is over the top and still amazing. I think he hits them whenever Fogarty says vine. When I listen I always pick out one instrument to focus on and it never disappoints. That rhythm section is one of the best ever. I will die on this hill. What ninny can be bored by all this greatness. At only 11 minutes it's not like it's a Grateful Dead jam.

As putrid as Mardi Gras is, "Someday Never Comes" hits like an emotional gut punch to anyone who has lived what Fogerty is singing about there. It's a masterpiece.

CCR is kind of tough to review as a " band" its such a one man show really. Since John Fogerty wrote all the notable songs sand lead and played lead guitar the rest of the guys were just backup, of course you can say the same about Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler . Anyway they had great individual songs but rating the albums I would put GREEN RIVER first. Its the only one I bought!

1) Jason, I admire you. I don't understand what you hear all the time, and I rarely agree with you, but you don't allow anyone else to influence how you hear things. I think some of what I hear in music is influenced by what critics or other people have said. I take what a lot of people say into consideration. A lot of people pick up on various things I might have missed and so I give things I listen to more chances. 2) I always liked CCR, but ABBA has been quite a revelation to me. I don't think I can, as of yet, distinguish any kind of order of their albums, which would seem to disqualify me for that video. But as for this one, it's a pretty unremarkable (as far as controversy is concerned) list: 1. Cosmo's Factory 2. Willie And The Poor Boys 3. Green River 4. Bayou Country 5. Pendulum 6. Self-titled Debut 7. Mardi Gras How many pop/rock bands/artists have released 3 good-to-great-to-classic albums in a single year? Not many.

Thank you for the very diplomatic response to my list making. Haha. If other people, especially those who I think have good taste, say something is good I will definitely try to hear what they hear, but often I just don't. The list of beloved and influential bands that I think are overrated, mediocre, uninteresting, or flat-out terrible would shock and appall the viewers of this channel, but that's the fun of it. Its fun to see what different people think of things. I don't understand the people who only want to see their only opinions reflected back to them in these videos. -Jason
