Liszt - Dante Sonata (Jorge Bolet)

My favorite performance of this piece I've heard so far. This is a transfer from a cassette tape of Jorge Bolet doing the second suite of Années de pèlerinage.

I agree the wonderful section starting at 7:40 is not only amazing music, but also I consider this recording by Bolet has by far been my personal favorite among the dozen or so I've heard. It's just stunning. Thanks for posting! It is no longer in my personal library, and I've been searching for it on YT for along time.

The part at 9:32 is honestly what I've looked everywhere for, regarding performances on this piece and I'm glad Bolet did that! The only other instance I've heard that part of the piece being played that way was Jon Nakamatsu's recording. Great performance indeed. I can truly feel the fire and soul emanating from his playing.

Everybody has the right to dislike something or to disagree, but what right does MM have to state he "knows" what is in their minds or that he "thinks at a much higher level?" I love Bolet's performance of Dante. I wonder what MM sounds like in this work. Bolet and Richter gave us their lives. The least we can do is to be polite about their passion.

Emile Gilels and Sviatolslav Richter are on record as saying Bolet was the greatest living western pianist but his recording contract with RCA was terminated abruptly, in 1974 I believe. Why ?

I suspect you are looking for something specific which has importance for you. For me, when I hear Bolet play Liszt I have no doubt that I am hearing great music but I do not have that certainty with others, Claudio Arrau for instance. It is all so personal. What I appreciate with Bolet's playing of Liszt is his ability to bend the rhythm without disturbing the pulse and I like his clarity. I am happy to agree with Gilels and Richter and, I believe, Vlodos. Do you like Wild's playing?

In what conservatory did you study and who were your professors, to give you such superior understanding that you know what is in the minds of these two artists? Of course you have to be able to play better than them and to know more than them to give your scatalogical remarks authority. To whom do you play Alborada? I have never seen your name on a program.

When one states things like this, one moves from reason to prejudice. How do you know what Bolet or Richter understood? Do you play the Dante sonata or Jeuz d'Eaux, or Mirroirs or Gaspard? Most people regard Richter amongst the greatest of pianists and unless you are in his company you should not belittle him, nor Bolet for that matter. Criticise, if you must, on your knees. These people are better than us.
