This has always been my favorite of the transcendental etudes as well. Thank you for the effort you put in to share the history of these etudes and of the live analysis of the piece. I also love your somber and thoughtful interpretation of the piece. Thank you.

Astonishing. This is the first time I have heard 'Harmonies du soir' by Liszt and I was forcibly struck by the tonal ambiguity and the 'impressionistic' colours that seem to make this a very forward-looking work in terms of its adventurous harmonies. I have subsequently read that this (demonically difficult) technical étude "is a study in harmonies, broken chords played in quick succession, full octave jumps, chromatic harmonies, chord variations, interlocking hands, bravura, massive chords, especially proper pedalling, and performance as a whole." And what a performance you give, Cole! I was quite mesmerized from beginning to end, particularly with those chordal jumps I watched your hands make! And now I can understand why pandemonium erupted at Liszt’s concerts throughout Europe, leading to the phenomenon known as “Lisztomania”. With music like this, the concert experience must have been half spectator sport with Liszt's own daredevil virtuosity on display as the powerful drama in his music unfolded, inspiring a reaction of wonder in the audience as this piano music was clearly written for the stage and not for a 'blind' audio recording! And you have given us that visual drama, Cole, in this performance. I can say with honesty that I have experienced a new phenomenon I can only term "Coleomania"! As ever, your introductory commentary was also fascinating. Indeed, the wonderfully diverse content of piano music and analysis on offer on this channel is just phenomenal. THANK YOU so much for 18 minutes of pure drama!

Such an important talk and beautiful performance. Thank you as always. I remember Arrau saying there's an element of kitsch in this piece. In the Alan Walker bio there's a scene related about Liszt holding student's head so that he would watch the sunset while playing the piece and not look at his hands.

Duude!! Your speech is great. You have amazing elocuence talking and playing piano. I have a question would you say this is harder than Chopin's Ballade 2 or it would be on the other way
