Сегодня на Корфу по традиции совершается крестный ход с мощами святителя Спиридона Тримифунтского. Раку несут вертикально - и святитель как будто сам обходит столицу острова, который он взял под свое покровительство.
В этот день отмечается праздник, связанный с одним из чудес святителя Спиридона. В 1716 году Корфу осаждала армия османских захватчиков. Островитяне мужественно сопротивлялись, но силы были неравными. Войско османов насчитывало более 50 тысяч человек. На 11 августа они назначили день решающей битвы, собираясь атаковать крепость. Накануне, 10 августа, начался сильный дождь, который затопил не только город, но и все окрестности. 11 августа гарнизон острова был готов сражаться с врагом не на жизнь, а на смерть. Но каково же было удивление островитян - захватчики покинули Корфу.
Впоследствии выяснилось, что в грозе и буре османам явился на небесах огненный воин в сопровождении легионов ангелов. В одной руке он держал меч и горящую свечу, а в другой - крест. По описаниям стало ясно, что это сам святитель Спиридон защитил остров. С тех пор в память о чудесной помощи святого на Корфу 11 августа ежегодно совершается крестный ход.

On this day, a holiday is celebrated associated with one of the miracles of St. Spyridon. In 1716, Corfu was besieged by an army of Ottoman invaders. The islanders resisted bravely, but the forces were unequal. The Ottoman army numbered more than 50 thousand people.
They set the day of the decisive battle for August 11, intending to attack the fortress. The day before, on August 10, heavy rain began, which flooded not only the city, but also the entire surrounding area. On August 11, the island's garrison was ready to fight the enemy to the death. But what was the surprise of the islanders - the invaders left Corfu.
It subsequently turned out that in a thunderstorm and storm, a fiery warrior appeared in heaven to the Ottomans, accompanied by legions of angels.
In one hand he held a sword and a burning candle, and in the other a cross. From the descriptions it became clear that it was Saint Spyridon himself who protected the island. Since then, in memory of the miraculous help of the saint, a procession of the cross has been held in Corfu on August 11 every year.
