High unemployment and job scarcity is the mother of our slum problem. A person earning KES 200-500 a day will never, ever afford rents of 10K and up. These are the people paying 2-4K per month for rooms in the slums. Our solution is industry. If we could create an enabling environment for industries in ALL counties, less and less people would migrate to Nairobi.

Prof am a photojournalist, veteran if I may add...I admire your content and argument on how you tackle the various issues you address...but in reference to Kibra I may not entirely agree with you. One; In the eyes of many it's a slum but dig deeper kibra wasn't a slum and to us to me its home like any rural home. The kibra we call slum was created by greedy government administrators who aren't audited by their employer, this corrupt individuals in the names of DO's and Chiefs are the reason we hv slums across Nairobi. Economic immigrants arrived in droves in the pursuit of sustenance only to out grow the opportunities available for work. Whatever the argument being pushed across to settle a community who left their hearts in ancestral villages across the land to slave them on mortgages away from the places of adobe...is not the answer to eradicating this problem.

The new system is to build apartment complex’s and require by law to have certain number of tenants, referred to as section 8, where their debt is controlled and subsidized by the govt. Look at what’s currently in the US, Norway and other European countries & Canada of course.

I once stayed in Zimbabwe Harare to be presise , it's the government which allocate the land to the people though you pay a little a mount of money, but still the plot will belong to the government.
